Patent number: 10824959Abstract: A transformed data set corresponding to a machine learning classifier's training data set is generated. Each transformed record contains a modified version of a corresponding training record, as well as the prediction made for the training record by the classifier. A set of explanatory rules is minded from the transformed data set, with each rule indicating a relationship between the prediction and one or more features corresponding to the training records. From among the rule set, a particular matching rule is selected to provide an easy-to-understand explanation for a prediction made by the classifier for an observation record which is not part of the training set.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 2016Date of Patent: November 3, 2020Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Bibaswan Kumar Chatterjee, Srinivasan Sengamedu Hanumantha Rao

Patent number: 10824339Abstract: Systems and methods are described for management of garbage collection processes in an on-demand code execution system. An on-demand code execution system may execute user-submitted code on virtual machine instances, which may be hosted on various host computing devices. As each virtual machine instance executes code, garbage (e.g., memory that is allocated and then not properly de-allocated) may accumulate and may reduce the computing resources that the instance makes available for allocation to further code executions. A garbage collection manager may be implemented on each host computing device that implements garbage collection by taking a snapshot of the virtual machine instance prior to the accumulation of garbage, and then restoring the snapshot rather than identifying and de-allocating garbage on an item-by-item basis. The virtual machine instance may also identify state information that should be preserved, and the garbage collection manager may preserve or avoid overwriting this state information.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 2019Date of Patent: November 3, 2020Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Marc John Brooker, Andrew J. Patent number: 10824343Abstract: Techniques are described for managing access of executing programs to non-local block data storage. In some situations, a block data storage service uses multiple server storage systems to reliably store network-accessible block data storage volumes that may be used by programs executing on other physical computing systems. A group of multiple server block data storage systems that store block data volumes may in some situations be co-located at a data center, and programs that use volumes stored there may execute on other physical computing systems at that data center. If a program using a volume becomes unavailable, another program (e.g., another copy of the same program) may in some situations obtain access to and continue to use the same volume, such as in an automatic manner in some such situations.Type: GrantFiled: November 29, 2016Date of Patent: November 3, 2020Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Roland Paterson-Jones, Peter N. Dynamically allocating resources for interdependent portions of distributed data processing programs
Patent number: 10824474Abstract: Portions of distributed data processing programs may be dynamically allocated computing resources. When execution of a distributed data processing program is requested, interdependent portions of the resource may be dynamically computing resources according to requirements determined for the portions. The allocated resources may be obtained from pools of computing resources that can be utilized by different distributed data processing programs.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 2017Date of Patent: November 3, 2020Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Ankit Kamboj, Vinayak Thapliyal -
Patent number: 10824940Abstract: The present disclosure is directed to training, and providing recommendations via, a temporal ensemble of neural networks. The neural networks in the temporal ensemble can be trained at different times. For example, a neural network can be periodically trained using current item interaction data, for example once per day using purchase histories of users of an electronic commerce system. The item interaction data can be split into a more recent group and a less recent group, for example the last two weeks of data and the remainder of the last two years of data. The periodic training of neural networks, using updated data and the sliding windows created by the date split, results in a number of different models for predicting item interaction events. Using a collection of these neural networks together as a temporal ensemble can increase recommendation accuracy without requiring additional hardware for training.Type: GrantFiled: November 30, 2016Date of Patent: November 3, 2020Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Oleg Rybakov, Siddharth Singh

Patent number: 10826971Abstract: Techniques for distributed computing system node management are described herein. In some cases, internal compute nodes (i.e., compute nodes that are allocated to the distributed system) may be mutually trusted such that they may freely establish communications with one another. By contrast, external compute nodes (i.e., compute nodes that aren't allocated to the distributed computing system) may be untrusted such that their access to the distributed system may be regulated. In some cases, one or more of the compute nodes within the distributed computing system may maintain respective collections of system view information. Each respective collection of system view information may include, for example, information associated with the corresponding compute node's view of the distributed computing system based on information that is available to the corresponding compute node.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 2014Date of Patent: November 3, 2020Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Guido Beat Zgraggen, Christopher Ryan Mhley, Darren James Alton, Adam Julio Villalobos, Eric Benjamin Merritt, Xiao Zeng
