Abstract: A network content message placement management process is directed to the processing and management of messages in content displayed at a client computing device. A client computing device provides message placement configuration information to a network computing and storage provider. The network computing and storage transmits message placement requests to a content provider based on the message placement configuration information. The client computing device may subsequently directly or indirectly request content from the content provider. The content provided from the content provider may include one or more of the alternative messages provided in the message placement configuration information. Illustratively, the alternative messages may be included in place of other messages, such as advertisements, from third party message providers.

Abstract: A system for removing heat from electrical systems includes a dehumidification device including a desiccant, an evaporative cooling device, and air moving devices, and an air flow control devices. The air moving device moves air through the dehumidification device, the evaporative cooling device, and the electrical systems.

Abstract: Systems and methods for authentication generate keys from secret credentials shared between authenticating parties and authenticators. Generation of the keys may involve utilizing specialized information in the form of parameters that are used to specialize keys. Keys and/or information derived from keys held by multiple authorities may be used to generate other keys such that signatures requiring such keys and/or information can be verified without access to the keys. Keys may also be derived to form a hierarchy of keys that are distributed such that a key holder's ability to decrypt data depends on the key's position in the hierarchy relative to the position of a key used to encrypt the data. Key hierarchies may also be used to distribute key sets to content processing devices to enable the devices to decrypt content such that sources or potential sources of unauthorized content are identifiable from the decrypted content.

Abstract: Disclosed are various embodiments for performing stateless verification of communication addresses. Encrypted verification data is generated for a user, including a communication address, an identifier of the user, a verification code, and a timestamp. The encrypted verification data is sent to the user, and the verification code is transmitted to the communication address. The encrypted verification data and the verification code are received from the user. The communication address is verified based at least in part on the verification code received from the user and the encrypted verification data received from the user.

Abstract: An electronic device case comprises a housing having a pivotable light arm and a receptacle. The light arm may be displaced between a stowed position and a use position. When in the use position, the light arm reduces the amount of glare light and increases the uniformity of light distribution to effectively illuminate the display of the electronic device. The receptacle comprises a lip over-molded to a base. The lip may be formed of a material that is more flexible than a material forming the base.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for material handling in an order fulfillment center. An order fulfillment system may include inventory storage, a processing area, and a control system. The inventory storage may in some instances include two storage areas, and in some cases the processing area may be disposed between the two storage areas. The processing area may include a router module that is configured to receive inventory items that have been picked from the inventory storage. Inventory items may be received by the router module via conveyance receptacles (e.g., totes, bins) that are conveyed using a conveyor mechanism. The processing area may also include a plurality of processing modules that may be configured to receive inventory items from the router module. In some instances, the processing modules may receive the inventory items via conveyance receptacles that are conveyed using the conveyor mechanism.

Abstract: A media player user interface on behalf of a user associated with a user account is generated that has a social network module that includes media updates associated with other users to which the user is linked. Media player actions associated with the user occurring in the media player user interface are also captured, updates are generated and provided to social network modules in a media player user interface associated with other linked users.

Abstract: Motions and gestures can be detected using a video capture element of a computing device even when the video capture element is not able to accurately capture the motion. Information about the background in the image information can be determined, and the way in which that background information is occluded can be used to determine the motion. In at least some embodiments, edges are detected in the video information. Images of foreground objects can then be isolated from edges of background images by comparing histograms of multiple frames of video. The remaining data is indicative of a direction and speed of motion, which can be used to infer a determined gesture even though that gesture was not visible in the captured video information.

Abstract: A method of using a hardware security module and an adjunct application programming interface to harden tokenization security and encryption key rotation is disclosed. In various embodiments, the method comprises receiving encrypted data at a processor of a computer system, decrypting the encrypted data to cleartext in the processor, and issuing a unique token associated with the data.

Abstract: Antenna structures of electronic devices and methods of operating the electronic devices with the antenna structures are described. One apparatus includes a RF feed coupled to a split-feed antenna element of an antenna structure. The antenna structure also includes a parasitic grounding element coupled to a ground plane. The split-feed antenna element is configured to operate as a feeding structure to the parasitic grounding element that is not conductively connected to the RF feed.

Abstract: A popular highlight may be presented to a user who wishes to make the popular highlight a personal user highlight. Upon activation of a control, a personal user highlight is generated from the popular highlight. The user may then manipulate the resulting personal user highlight as they would any other user highlight.

Abstract: Headphones can be configured such that back surfaces of the speaker housings can be coupled to form a loop enabling users to wear the headphones around their necks when the speakers are not in use. In various embodiments, faces of the respective speaker housings may comprise asymmetrical, complementary surfaces. In such embodiments, the users can distinguish between the speakers intended to correspond with respective right and left stereo channels by tactile feel. In some embodiments, the interlocking of the housing structures can be achieved by magnetic force to maintain the coupling when the speakers are not in use but can be decoupled by the user without undue effort. In some embodiments, the speaker housings are configured to constrain the housings to a specific orientation when mated.

Abstract: An interactive system enables users to generate and submit lists of items (e.g., products selected from an electronic catalog) for viewing by other users. The user-generated lists are selectively suggested to users of the system based (or based in part) on ratings of the user-generated lists. These ratings may, for example, be based on explicit ratings of the lists by users, and/or measures of how effective the respective lists are at driving purchases of items. In some contexts, the system may select one or more user-generated lists to present to a user based on a set of items purchased, viewed, or otherwise selected by the user, or based on the results of a search query submitted by the user.

Abstract: Disclosed are various embodiments for executing untrusted content in a trusted network through the use of an external proxy server application. An identification of a resource specified by a user is obtained in one or more computing devices. The user is associated with one of a plurality of network sites hosted by the one or more computing devices. The one or more computing devices are within a trusted network that is separated from an untrusted network by a firewall. The resource is obtained from an external proxy server application executed in the untrusted network. One or more network pages are generated for the one of the network sites based at least in part on the resource.

Abstract: Adaptive de-noise filtering of signals is disclosed. A signal may be identified and a noise level corresponding to noise associated with the signal may be determined. The noise level may be determined by isolating the noise from the signal and generating a metric indicative of the noise level. A threshold noise level may be identified. A cutoff frequency may be determined based at least in part on the noise level and the threshold noise level, and, optionally, based on one or more characteristics associated with a low pass filter. The signal may be low pass filtered based at least in part on the cutoff frequency to generate a filtered signal. Additional signals may be identified and filtered in accordance with respective corresponding cutoff frequencies such that noise levels associated with the additional filtered signals and the filtered signal may be substantially the same and at or below the threshold noise level.

Abstract: Facilitating discussion group formation and interaction is described. In one example, a server sends an eBook to a client device. The server determines whether the eBook is associated with at least one book club in response to sending the eBook to the client device. The server sends book club identifiers to the client device when the eBook is associated with at least one book club. The book club identifiers specify one or more book clubs associated with the eBook.

Abstract: Nodes of a database service may receive a read request to perform a read of a record stored by the database service and a transaction request to perform a transaction to the record. First and second indications of time may be associated with the read and transaction, respectively. A potential read anomaly (e.g., fuzzy read, read skew, etc.) may be detected based, at least in part, on a determination that the first indication of time is within a threshold value of the second indication of time. In response to detecting the potential read anomaly, the read may be performed after the transaction specified by the transaction request, regardless of whether the first indication of time is indicative of an earlier point in time than the second indication of time.

Abstract: Methods, apparatus, and computer-accessible storage media for providing redundant storage gateways. A client may create a storage gateway group and add storage gateways to the group. The client may assign one or more volumes on a remote data store to each the storage gateways in the group. Volume data for each storage gateway in the group may be replicated to at least one other storage gateway in the group. If one of the gateways in the group becomes unavailable, one or more other gateways in the group may take over volumes previously assigned to the unavailable gateway, using the replicated data in the group to seamlessly resume gateway operations for the respective volumes. Client processes that previously communicated with the unavailable gateway may be manually or automatically directed to the gateway(s) that are taking over the unavailable gateway's volumes.

Abstract: A service provider network includes functionality for allowing a customer to influence the placement of virtual machine instances on server computers by specifying a placement strategy. Placement strategies may be shared among customers of the service provider network, and the placement strategies and the publishers of the placement strategies might be rated. Vendor-agnostic placement strategies might also be utilized to identify a service provider network for executing a virtual machine instance. A placement strategy that includes dynamically evaluated parameters might also be utilized to modify virtual machine instances in a customer fleet on an ongoing basis.

Abstract: Automated return machines may receive items to be returned to an electronic marketplace by a customer, or repurchased by the electronic marketplace, within one or more designated chambers. The machines may gather one or more attributes of the item and utilize such attributes to confirm an identity of the item or to evaluate its condition, and to generate an offer for the repurchase of the item based on an anticipated demand for the item as well as a strategy or plan to distribute the item, either directly from the automated return machine or from a facility designated by an electronic marketplace. If the offer is declined, the item may be returned to the customer. If the offer is accepted, a credit for the item may be remitted to the customer, and the item may be added to the inventory at the electronic marketplace and made available for resale to other customers.
