Patent number: 6578574Abstract: The invention relates to a device for performing artificial respiration on a patient, comprising a container (1) which defines an inner volume relative to the ambient and has a first opening accommodating a valve arrangement (2, 14) which allows inflow of air or gases from the outer area to the inner area, and a second opening in connection with which there is provided a valve arrangement (3, 16) which allows outflow from the container and prevents inflow to the container through the second opening. An expansible means (7) is provided in the container and adapted to expand upon action from the outer area to displace air and/or other gases in the container (1) out through the second opening. This improves the certainty that oxygen and/or other gas finds its way to the patient's air passages.Type: GrantFiled: January 19, 2001Date of Patent: June 17, 2003Assignee: Ambu International A/SInventor: Ole B. Patent number: 6230712Abstract: A head immobilization device, or head immobilizer, is disclosed. The head immobilizer includes an adjustable stable structure obtained by a middle wall standing vertically above the patient's head. The middle wall in an operative condition restricts hinges from up and down movement in a first perpendicular plane, and sideways movement in a second perpendicular plane, while still allowing vertical side walls to be folded flat against the temple areas of a patient's head. This structure permits the head immobilizer to secure a large variety of head sizes. Attachment flanges for the side walls are secured to the board at an angle of approximately 90° to the middle wall. This attachment locks the structure from movement in a third perpendicular plane. The patient's head is prevented from moving forward by a restraining band joining the two side walls across the patient's forehead.Type: GrantFiled: February 18, 2000Date of Patent: May 15, 2001Assignee: Ambu International A/SInventor: Ole Køhnke

Patent number: 5645522Abstract: A device for performing active compression/decompression cardiopulmonary resuscitation includes an applicator body with an upper surface and a lower surface. The lower surface includes provisions for detachably securing to the patient's chest, such as a vacuum cup or an adhesive layer. For manual resuscitation, the upper surface will include a strap or other structure for securing a performer's hand thereto. In an exemplary device, a disc-shaped handle is attached to the upper surface of a vacuum cup applicator by a short connecting stem structure. A pressure gauge mounted to the handle permits the performer to monitor how much force is being applied in both the compression and decompression phases. For automatic applications, a mechanical drive member will be secured to the upper surface. By alternately pressing and lifting on the applicator device, the patient's chest can be compressed and expanded to improve induced ventilation and circulation.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 1993Date of Patent: July 8, 1997Assignees: The Regents of the University of California, AMBU International A/SInventors: Keith G.
