    Abstract: A multi-layer article of manufacture includes an intermediate layer of a water-swellable colloidal clay, such as bentonite, sandwiched between two layers of flexible sheet or fabric material wherein the two flexible layers of sheet or fabric material are structurally interconnected through the intermediate clay layer, such as by needle punching, after lubrication of the clay surface with a liquid, such as water, to interconnect fibers of one fabric layer to the other fabric layer at spaced locations over essentially the entire inner surface areas of both sheet or fabric material layers. In a preferred embodiment, a water-insoluble adhesive is applied to at least one of the fabric layers to lock the interconnecting fibers in place and substantially increase the structural integrity, particularly the shear strength, of the article.

    Abstract: A shaped, water-expandable water-sealing article used for sealing an area between a first section of at least partially cured concrete and a second, adjacent section of substantially uncured concrete. The clay water sealing article is in the shape of a quadrilateral, preferably a trapezoid, and is disposed to bridge an area between the two sections of concrete. Upon hydration of the clay contained within the shaped water sealing article, expansion of the clay creates expansion forces extending from a corner of the article that is surrounded by the uncured concrete, wherein the corner has an included angle greater than 90.degree., preferably at least 100.degree.. The expansion force developed by the expansion of the shaped water sealing article are absorbed by a substantially increased area of the uncured concrete as compared to expansion forces resulting from a clay-based water seal having a 90.degree. included angle at the corner(s) surrounded by the uncured concrete.

    Abstract: A bentonite clay-based polymerization catalyst is manufactured by adhering together a plurality of smaller acid-activated bentonite clay particles, using a strong mineral acid, such as H.sub.2 SO.sub.4, as a binder. An acid-activated bentonite clay having a particle size below about 60 mesh, U.S. Sieve Series, preferably calcium bentonite, having calcium as a predominant exchangeable action, is mixed with a strong mineral acid, preferably H.sub.2 SO.sub.4, and water to form the catalyst. The mixture is subjected to intensive mixing, curing and drying to form strong particles capable of grinding to a desired particle size distribution, e.g., -6 mesh to +60 mesh, U.S. Sieve Series, to form the catalyst. Fines resulting from the grinding step are completely recycled to the intensive mixing stage of the process to achieve 100% yield. Some adjustment of acid content of the mix may be needed to take into account the acid carried into the mix by recycled fines.

    Abstract: A composition and method of absorbing animal dross. In one embodiment, the composition comprises discrete particles (about 50 microns to about 3350 microns, preferably about 600 microns to about 3350 microns in size) of a non-compacted water-swellable bentonite clay that effectively absorbs animal dross and simultaneously agglomerates into a sufficiently large and stable mass, thereby permitting physical separation of the soiled and wetted water-swellable bentonite clay particles from discrete particles of the unsoiled and unwetted water-swellable bentonite clay even after partial drying of about 1 to about 24 hours at room temperature, without substantial sticking to animal paws and fur.

    Abstract: A pH-indicating material capable of undergoing a clearly visually detectable color transition at a desired pH, e.g., at a pH at or below about 5.6 and/or at a pH at or above about 7.6. When the pH-indicating material is wetted on its surface with liquid animal dross, particularly animal urine, such as cat urine, the pH-indicating material will undergo a clearly visible color transition at a urine-problematic pH, e.g., acidic or alkaline. The pH-indicating material is maintained on an inert carrier, separate from the cat litter material itself, so that the cat litter material does not chemically interfere with the urine pH-induced color transition provided by the dye(s) in the coating material, and so that the color transition is an exclusive result of the pH of the contacting animal urine, without pH interference from the litter material.

    Abstract: A new and improved, non-porous carbon foundry sand and a method of treating a fluid coke, having a spherical or ovoid particle shape and a size suitable for a coating surface, or a core or mold surface in the foundry industry, wherein the carbon sand is processed by heating the carbon particles at a controlled rate to a temperature in the range of about 1900.degree. F. to about 2300.degree. F. during a period of time preferably of more than about 30 minutes, and preferably for a period of about 1 to 2 hours, particularly to about 2000.degree. F. to about 2200.degree. F., and a method of casting molten metal against the heat treated carbon particles wherein the non-porous carbon foundry sand is combined with a suitable binder with which mixture a mold is formed to cast metal parts. The non-porous carbon sand also is useful in forming molds, cores, shell molds and shell cores and otherwise in using the carbon sand to replace other molding an core-making sands used in the foundry industry.

    Abstract: A container having four vertical sides, a top side and a bottom side, the six sides being connected to form a cube. The six sides are joined at the edges of the cube, and the juncture of one vertical edge with two upper edges forms a slanted surface. A pouring spout is mounted on the slanted surface and is inset from the planes of the adjacent sides so that it does not interfere with nesting and stacking. A handle is attached to the top side, at approximately its center, for carrying purposes, the handle being foldable to a flat position to facilitate stacking. The container is formed by cutting a blank from a flat sheet of relatively stiff material, and folding the blank along creases to form a closed container. The top and four sides are folded and sealed first, the pouring spout is installed, the container is filled through the open bottom side, and then the bottom side is folded and sealed.

The water-swellable clay is confined within a layer of material that permits the entrance of water to contact the water-swellable clay for hydration of the clay, such as by being water-porous or water-soluble and such that upon sufficient hydration of the confined mass of water-swellable clay, the confining layer will dissolve sufficiently, burst or tear to permit relatively free movement of the hydrating and expanding water-swellable clay.
