Abstract: A lock unit for a coin operated locker cabinet or the like incorporates an improved arrangement for permitting a custodian to selectively, releasably retain the lock unit within a cabinet mounting post and to control a patron lock for cabinet door unlocking/locking purposes, while a patron key is removed from the patron lock. The lock unit additionally incorporates an improved coin gauging and counting mechanism adapted to selectively accommodate the lock unit for operation by one or more coins of a given denomination and improved construction for adapting a coin chute to coins of different diameters.

Abstract: A coin counting and release mechanism is disclosed for use in adapting coin operated lock units for multiple coin operation, wherein only a last deposited coin of a preselected number of coins of a given size or denomination is actually retained within the lock unit for sensing purposes and all previously deposited coins of such size or of a smaller size being permitted to pass freely downwardly through the lock unit in order to avoid the possibility of an improper coin sensing operation or jamming of the lock unit as a result of insertion of improperly sized coins. In an alternative construction the mechanism is adjustable to selectively vary the preselected number of coins required for operation of a lock unit.

Each cabinet is fitted with a latch mechanism permitting recipients to return doors of cabinets from which packages have been removed to locked condition in a manner providing for the "capture" of the access keys until removed by a mailman for subsequent use. Preferably, the doors are fitted with return mechanisms providing for locking of such doors automatically upon return thereof into closed condition.

Abstract: An improved coin operated lock unit and arrangement for mounting same is characterized in that the lock unit is removably mounted within a lock unit mounting post through a rear surface thereof, which is exposed for lock unit insertion/removal purposes only when the door of an adjacent storage compartment is in an unlocked condition; the mounting post having apertures in its front and side surfaces disposed for alignment with at least the key operated custodian and patron locks, the coin chute and the lock bolt of the lock unit, when disposed within the mounting post.
