Patent number: 7101413Abstract: A method of applying flux to molten metal. A heat insulating shell comprises a porous ceramic fibrous refractory material. The shell includes an opening therein. A fluxing material is poured into the shell through the opening and is bonded thereto. The shell with the fluxing material therein is then exposed to molten metal in a casting mold. Only the portion of the fluxing material closest to the opening is exposed to the molten metal. The remainder of the interior fluxing material is thermally insulated from the heat of the exterior molten metal. That portion of the fluxing material that is exposed to the molten metal melts and escapes into the molten metal. Thus, the method provides for applying flux to molten metal in a controlled time release manner.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 2003Date of Patent: September 5, 2006Assignee: American Metal Chemical CorporationInventor: Jay A. Patent number: 6640874Abstract: A riser sleeve apparatus (10) for preparing and insulating a passage (14) within which molten metal is accumulated prior to its movement into a mold cavity which includes an inner surface (12) which longitudinally extends between a first end (16) and a second end (18) wherein the inner surface bounds the passage. The riser sleeve further includes an annular lip (20) which is positioned adjacent the second end and extends inward into the passage. When the riser sleeve is positioned about a plug of a pattern, the annular lip deforms to seal the passage at the second end. A process for forming a cast metal article using said riser sleeve apparatus. A process for forming the riser sleeve apparatus.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 2002Date of Patent: November 4, 2003Assignee: American Metal Chemical CorporationInventors: Jay A. Vorndran, John E. Patent number: 6349757Abstract: A process of positioning a riser sleeve about a plug of a mold cavity pattern. The riser sleeve is positioned to engage the plug to prevent sand from entering the interstitial space between the riser sleeve and the plug. The riser sleeve may comprise a deformable annular lip for engagement with the perimeter of the plug. The riser sleeve may engage the plug in sealing relationship.Type: GrantFiled: April 20, 2000Date of Patent: February 26, 2002Assignee: American Metal Chemical CorporationInventors: Jay A.
