  • Patent number: 6966733
Abstract: A wheelchair restraint system for a mass transportation vehicle having a securement area for a wheelchair is disclosed which includes a barrier carried at a rear portion of the securement area disposed generally transverse to the longitudinal vehicle axis. A rear wheelchair attachment assembly is carried by the rear barrier for anchoring the wheelchair to the barrier. A personal securement belt assembly secures a seated wheelchair occupant to the wheelchair in the securement area. A front bulkhead extends generally transverse to the longitudinal vehicle axis at a front portion of the securement area which includes an extendable anchor member which extends transverse relative to the longitudinal vehicle axis. The anchor member is extendable between a stored position in which the anchor member is stowed within the bulkhead and a deployed position wherein the anchor member is extended from the bulkhead.

  • Patent number: 6755474
Abstract: A pivoting armrest is configured for mounting on the bottom part of the aisle side of a vehicle seat frame. The armrest may receive a control cable and is mounted on a hub that allows passage of the control cable to the vehicle seat mechanism. The armrest is maintained in position by a lock pin, and a resilient plate controls the lock pin. A handgrip is mounted to a lower part of the armrest for easy grasping by the fingers of a user. The handgrip engages a lower edge of the resilient plate so that a user's pulling outward on the lower edge of the handgrip releases the lock pin.

  • Patent number: 6524039
Abstract: A system for restraining a wheelchair in a vehicle comprises a barrier having housings for restraining belts thereon. A remote release assembly is mounted on the barrier remote from the housing and is connected to the housing, as by a cable. The wheelchair is secured by first operating the assembly to release the belt from the housing to allow the vehicle operator to withdraw the belt from the housing and attach it to the wheelchair before the wheelchair is fully in the securing area Then, as the wheelchair is moved fully into the wheelchair area the operator again operates the remote assembly to cause the housing to retract the belt into the housing to tension the belt.

  • Patent number: 5915783
Abstract: A heated seat assembly especially suitable for outdoor use. A heater insert is positioned in the hollow of the seat cushion and includes a substrate member and a thin film heating element positioned on the substrate member. The heater insert is inserted into the hollow of the cushion through a slot in the rear edge of the cushion to position the thin film heating element within the hollow of the cushion beneath the seating surface. The heater insert is held in position by positioning of the forward edge of the substrate member in a crevice defined interiorly of the cushion proximate the front end of the cushion and by adhesive securement of a handle portion of the heater insert against an outer face of the rear edge of the cushion. Leads extend from terminals of the heating element to a plug in the handle portion of the insert which may be accessed by a plug of a pigtail cord extending from a junction box positioned on a riser surface of a grandstand immediately behind the seat assembly.

  • Patent number: 5888038
Abstract: Apparatus for securing one or more wheelchairs to a vehicle includes a plurality of straps for holding the wheelchairs to the vehicle. Some of the straps are attached to a movable element that can be moved into or out of the area to be occupied by the wheelchairs. This allows the area to be utilized by other passengers when no wheelchairs are present and also facilitates ingress and egress of the wheelchairs. In the preferred embodiment, movable elements, which carry housings for wheelchair-engaging belts and passenger restraint belts, are mounted to the side wall of the vehicle for pivotal movement about vertical axes between storage positions and operative positions. The apparatus allows an operator to quickly and easily secure or release a passenger in a wheelchair and maintains the integrity of the straps.
