Patent number: 4843527Abstract: A matrix lamp bank display utilizes individually removable light filtering assemblies that are composed of a rectangular tinted lens and a supporting frame. Each frame is removably mounted to the display at the front of the lamps provided within it. Each lens is inclined from the vertical to reduce sun or external lighting glare. Provision is made to accommodate thermal expansion of the lens and its supporting frame, as well as ventilation of each lens during lamp operation. Multicolored displays can be achieved by grouping two or more lens colors and operating multiple lamps in combination to project a desired color mix about the matrix.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 1988Date of Patent: June 27, 1989Assignee: American Sign & Indicator CorporationInventor: Ira Britt

Patent number: 4389804Abstract: A display assembly in the form of a supporting shell that mounts the assembly in an upright display panel in a matrix configuration. A disk assembly is pivoted to each shell and includes a thin disk movable about a transverse horizontal axis. The disk is moved by magnetic forces between a reflective position exposing one disk surface to the front of the panel, a closed condition exposing its opposite surface to the front of the panel, and a backlighted condition which is intermediate the other two.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 1980Date of Patent: June 28, 1983Assignee: American Sign & Indicator CorporationInventors: Lloyd Seibert, George E. Ellefsen

Patent number: 4115941Abstract: A display sign of the type comprising a back-lighted panel having a plurality of discrete light-transmitting areas and an equal number of controlled opaque disks which move between alternate stable positions. One position of each disk overlies the light-transmitting area associated therewith. The other position of each disk is offset to one corresponding side of its associated light-transmitting area. The disks are operated by electromagnets or other noncontacting means mounted to a carriage rearward of the panel. Selected disks are shifted from one position to the other during relative movement between the carriage and panel. The improvement comprises a magnetic drum which precedes the electromagnets to momentarily reset all of the disks in their first position overlying the individual light-transmitting area associated therewith in a progressive pattern just forward of the disks being set by the electromagnets.Type: GrantFiled: March 7, 1977Date of Patent: September 26, 1978Assignee: American Sign & Indicator CorporationInventor: Lorne Stephenson

Patent number: 4053340Abstract: A method for producing a panel for a back-lighted display sign comprises the steps of impressing recesses about one surface of a planar sheet of rigid foam to reduce the sheet thickness in a pattern corresponding to a desired pattern of recesses. Apertures are also formed through the sheet at locations each bounded by an identical corresponding portion of each recess. The sheet of foam is then sandwiched between outer cover layers to complete the basic panel structure for a display sign having multiple recesses containing discs which are moved between bi-stable positions covering the apertues or clear of the apertures.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 1976Date of Patent: October 11, 1977Assignee: American Sign and Indicator CorporationInventor: Gerald L. Patent number: 4045895Abstract: A display sign of the type comprising a back-lighted panel having a plurality of discrete light-transmitting areas and controlled opaque discs which selectively overlie the individual light-transmitting areas to produce a desired visual pattern of light transmitted through the panel. The improvement comprises discrete projections for supporting the individual discs. The arrangement of projections serves as structural reinforcement in the panel.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 1976Date of Patent: September 6, 1977Assignee: American Sign and Indicator CorporationInventor: Gerald L.
