Patent number: 4894823Abstract: Delay that a packet experiences in a network node is measured by employing a single local time signal in the node, and by separating a time stamp update function into a network node entry stamp function and a network node exit time stamp function. The node entry time stamp function is to generate a packet originate time value referenced to the local time signal value upon the packet entering the node. This packet originate time value is inserted into a packet header time stamp field to be transported through the node. The node exit time stamp function is to generate an updated time stamp value from the packet originate time value from the header time stamp field and the local time signal value upon the packet exiting the node. The undated time stamp value is inserted into the packet header time stamp field in place of the packet originate time value.Type: GrantFiled: September 11, 1987Date of Patent: January 16, 1990Assignees: American Telephone and Telegraph Company, AT&T Bell LaboratoriesInventors: Harry W. Method and apparatus for optimizing system operational parameters through projective transformations
Patent number: 4894773Abstract: Method and apparatus for optimizing the operational state of a system employing iterative steps that approximately follow a projective scaling trajectory or an affine scaling trajectory, or curve, in computing from its present state, x.sub.0 to a next state x.sub.1 toward the optimum state. The movement is made in a transformed space where the present (transformed) state of the system is at the center of the space, and the curve approximation is in the form of a power series in the step size. The process thus develops a sequence of tentative states x.sub.1, x.sub.2, x.sub.n . . . . It halts when a selected suitable stopping criterion is satisfied, and assigns the most recent tentative state as the optimized operating state of the system.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 1986Date of Patent: January 16, 1990Assignee: American Telephone and Telegraph Company, AT&T Bell LaboratoriesInventor: Jeffrey C. Patent number: 4894824Abstract: A high capacity metropolitan area network (MAN) is described. Data traffic from users is connected to data concentrators at the edge of the network, and is transmitted over fiber optic data links to a hub where the data is switched. The hub includes a plurality of data switching modules, each having a control means, and each connected to a distributed control space division switch. Advantageously, the data switching modules, whose inputs are connected to the concentrators, perform all checking and routing functions, while the 1024.times.1024 maximum size space division switch, whose outputs are connected to the concentrators, provides a large fan-out distribution network for reaching many concentrators from each data switching module.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1988Date of Patent: January 16, 1990Assignee: American Telephone and Telegraph Company, AT&T Bell LaboratoriesInventors: Jayant G. Patent number: 4894749Abstract: Option-equippable apparatus such as a computer that is not fully equipped with option circuit boards (14) has filler boards (15,16) connected to free board slots (13). In one embodiment, the filler boards (15) simulate the effect of circuit boards on airflow and act to evenly distribute the cooling air flow inside the computer cabinet (10) in order to provide improved cooling of the circuit boards. In another embodiment, the filler boards (16) block airflow between filler boards connected to adjacent board slots to direct more cooling airflow to any slots equipped with option circuit boards. The filler boards are made of electrically-conductive material (30) to absorb electromagnetic radiation emissions, and are covered with acoustically-absorbent material (33) to absorb sound emissions of the apparatus.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 1987Date of Patent: January 16, 1990Assignees: AT&T Information Systems Inc American Telephone and Telegraph Company, AT&T Information Systems, AT&T Bell LaboratoriesInventors: Gary W. Patent number: 4894822Abstract: A method and apparatus for decreasing delay and use of data processing resources in the reliable transmission of data frames in a packet network. In transmitting data from a source to a destination over a plurality of intermediate data switching points, the data processing required for each frame is selectively varied at each data switching point, according to the requirements for transmission of data frames of a message and of the succeeding link used for that message. A virtual link address is transmitted with each data frame which is translated into the mode of processing the frame at the data switching point, and into the virtual and real address of the next data link. Advantageously, such an arrangement allows for minimizing the data processing load and delay at each protocol handler of the data path through the packet network.Type: GrantFiled: November 24, 1987Date of Patent: January 16, 1990Assignee: AT&T Information Systems American Telephone and Telegraph CompanyInventors: Rolfe E. Patent number: 4893071Abstract: A capacitance based, high resolution, incrementally encoding, position measuring system employs an array of identical replicated electrodes that are driven in unison from an RF source and mounted in proximity to a patterned monolithic reference ground plane of arbitrary size. Motion of such position-sensing arrays is monitored by measuring both the sums and the differences of the electrode displacement currents in such a way as to provide incrementally encoding position signals in both one and two dimensions together with a continuous measurement of the height of the sensor array above the patterned ground plane. In various modifications, the system and methods are applied both to one dimensional linear, as well as to two dimensional planar and two dimensional cylindrical motion measurement and control. Various techniques for eliminating the effects of spurious capacitances are also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: May 24, 1988Date of Patent: January 9, 1990Assignee: American Telephone and Telegraph Company, AT&T Bell LaboratoriesInventor: Gabriel L. Patent number: 4892795Abstract: A process of making a lithium cell with a positive electrode that comprises a niobium chalcogenide (e.g., NbSe.sub.3) active material. The process comprises forming the active material by a procedure that comprises forming a layer of Nb powder on an inert substrate (e.g., an alumina plate), and reacting the powder with selenium or sulfur vapor such that the desired (fibrous) chalcogenide is formed. The powder layer typically is formed by depositing (e.g., by spraying) a layer of slurry on the substrate, with the slurry comprising a liquid such as propylene glycol and Nb powder, and removing the liquid from the deposited slurry. The resulting layer of Nb powder can be of uniform thickness, advantageously is less than 0.1 mm thick, and adheres relatively well to the substrate. In preferred embodiments reacting the Nb powder with Se vapor comprises a two-stage heat treatment, the first stage comprising maintaining the powder in contact with Se vapor for at least four hours at a temperature in the range 520.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 1988Date of Patent: January 9, 1990Assignee: American Telephone and Telegraph Company, AT&T Bell LaboratoriesInventors: Wei-Chou Fang, Brijesh Vyas

Patent number: 4893330Abstract: A method and an apparatus are disclosed to enable a public switching network to limit the geographical calling area of calls charged to a credit card. When a credit card call is originated, the called party number is included as part of the credit card validation request. The called party number is compared against numbers stored in a call restriction table previously entered by the owner of the credit card. The network accepts or denies credit card calls as a result of this comparison.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 1989Date of Patent: January 9, 1990Assignee: American Telephone and Telegraph Company, AT&T Bell LaboratoriesInventor: Victor A. Patent number: 4892374Abstract: A method for aligning an opto-electronic device such as a semiconductor laser to a waveguide on a substrate is disclosed. The method comprises placing the device onto the substrate such that it is in rough alignment with the waveguide, optically pumping the device such that the device emits electromagnetic radiation, with some of the emitted radiation being coupled into the waveguide and detected by appropriate means. If indicated by the detector signal, the position of the device is then adjusted until the desired degree of coupling is attained, whereupon the device is mechanically secured to the substrate and appropriate electrical connections made between device and substrate. Devices useful in the practice of the method typically comprise a window in their top metallization layer.Type: GrantFiled: March 3, 1988Date of Patent: January 9, 1990Assignee: American Telephone and Telegraph Company, AT&T Bell LaboratoriesInventors: David A.
