  • Publication number: 20080150171
Abstract: An apparatus is provided for improved gas/liquid contact in a chemical process tower, resulting in better performance. The apparatus comprises a tower having a series of tray decks and downcomers. Tray decks provide gas/liquid contact for mass transfer and the downcomers are required to clarify the liquid before entering the tray below. In this invention, the trays have at least one downcomer and one adjacent active sump. The sump has at least one row of apertures for bubbling vapor through liquid flowing therein, and is separated from the downcomer by a baffle. The clarified liquid at the bottom of the sump is sent to the downcomer. The liquid entering the next tray can be assured to divide evenly for multiple-downcomer applications. Gas/liquid contact is thereby enhanced through the installation of these apertures, and clarification of the liquid from bubbles is thereby improved through the addition of the active sump. Benefits to the tower operation include higher tray capacity and efficiency.

  • Patent number: 7270315
Abstract: In, for example, a gas-liquid, liquid/liquid exchange column, perforated tray assemblies are provided which have a plurality of adjacent tray sections with slots adjacent rounded leading edges of the sections, and catches extending along trailing edges which interlock in the slots of an adjacent section. This interlocking avoids the use of bolted joints which cause stagnant areas where sediment accumulation occurs, resulting in reduced gas-liquid and liquid/liquid contact, and the need for the tray sections to be frequently cleaned. Perforated domes may be provided on perforations to reduce stagnant areas.

  • Patent number: 6948705
Abstract: The lower, liquid collecting section of a gas/liquid contacting column has an entrained substance depleting duct extending therearound wherein gas, for example, steam is fed by the duct into the lower section, steam depleted by gravity of liquid droplets, is deflected upwardly by deflectors in the duct through duct openings into a central, upper region of the lower section, while steam with the droplets is deflected downwardly by deflectors in the duct through other duct openings towards a liquid pool in the lower section. Any other liquid and/or solids entrained in the gas (steam) are also deflected downwardly in this manner.

  • Patent number: 6799752
Abstract: A method and apparatus for increasing fractionation capacity and efficiency within an existing distillation column having preexisting mass transfer surface structures with a multiplicity of openings for vapor-liquid contact is provided. Some embodiments of the present invention include microdispersers, either individually or in combination, installed to convert target areas of select openings to achieve an optimal column performance without resorting to a full or partial replacement of the preexisting mass transfer trays. A kit for assembling an increased capacity and efficiency fractionation tray including installation instructions, one or more fastening devices and microdispersing bubble promoters and valves is also disclosed. A system for increasing capacity and efficiency of preexisting trays within a preexisting column is shown whereby microdispersers are used in combination with a revamp of the downcomer structures or other existing structures.

  • Patent number: 6746003
Abstract: A gas-liquid contacting apparatus is provided wherein the perforated trays are divided into portions by a lattice-like pattern of downcomers which deliver liquid to central regions of the tray portions immediately below them. An odd number, X, for example three parallel downcomers which are at right angles to an even number or X−1, for example two parallel downcomers are provided so that adjacent trays be turned at right angles so that the downcomers of the upper tray extend centrally between the downcomers of the lower tray. The downcomers reduce stagnant liquid regions, distribute the liquid more evenly on the trays and allow longer flow paths to be provided on the trays.

  • Patent number: 6565071
Abstract: A liquid/gas contacting apparatus is provided wherein the perforated trays have an upper liquid repellent layer of a fluorocarbon polymer, to increase, and spread, liquid flow over the tray, and a rough underside for bursting any bubbles of any spray there against. Ridges are provided forming chevron patterns between perforations in the trays to deflect liquid towards the casing sides and remove sediment therefrom.

  • Patent number: 6422539
Abstract: An apparatus for connecting adjacent tray panel of a fractionation tray within a distillation column tower for the separation between a vapor and liquid is provided. A first interlocking panel has an alignment area with at least one alignment slot toward the center of the panel and at least one alignment aperture located distal from the center of the panel. A second interlocking panel has an alignment tab with a valve perforation on the alignment tab. The alignment tab of the second panel is inserted into the alignment slot of the first panel at an angle. The gravitational force on the panel opposite the alignment tab of the second panel aligns the second panel within the horizontal plane of the first panel such that no bolts are required during assembly. Dispersion valves are inserted into the valve perforation to disperse the vapor and prevent weeping to the tray below and flooding to the tray above.

  • Patent number: 6270062
Abstract: A fluids contacting and dispersing apparatus for a fluids contacting column is provided comprising a perforated cover plate, means for positioning the cover plate over a tray opening and securing it within the opening. Deflecting members span each perforation in the cover plate to prevent bleed fluid from shooting straight up and hitting the underside of the above tray. The deflecting members also provide a surface for dispersing lighter, finer bleed fluid flowing upwardly through the perforations over a central zone of the cover plate and into heavier fluid flowing across the tray in the path of the cover plate. The deflecting members direct lighter fluid into what would otherwise be a stagnant central zone of the cover plate. The cover plate is positioned over the tray opening by means of legs which are integral with the cover plate and are slidable within the tray opening.

  • Patent number: 6189872
Abstract: The present invention provides an apparatus for use in the contact between a vapor and a liquid. In one embodiment, a column is provided having a generally vertical shell. A plurality of vertically spaced, horizontal fluid contacting trays for contacting the vapor and the liquid within the column may also be provided. Each horizontal contacting tray may include a liquid receiving area, an active perforated area and a liquid discharge area. An imperforate inlet area may be formed from a perimeter section of the liquid receiving area, and secured to the inner surface of the column. A downcomer may be positioned above said inlet area and inward from the inner wall surface of the column whereby the downcomer receives liquid from the liquid discharge area of an upper tray and directs flow to the inlet area. A froth activator may also be provided for contacting the liquid from the downcomer.

  • Patent number: 6053485
Abstract: An apparatus and method for attaching a dispersion valve to a fractionation tray surface. The valve is inserted into a fractionation tray perforation. At least two legs extend downward from a cover plate with a larger area than the perforation. Each of the legs is positioned at or near the peripheral inner surface of the tray perforation. Each leg has an outwardly projecting hooking element. As the valve is inserted into the fractionation tray perforation by pressure applied to the cover plate, the hooking elements bend inward slightly to a smaller circumferential plane than that of the tray perforation. After insertion, the flexible legs spring back to their original outwardly projection. The tip of each hooking element then contacts the bottom surface of the fractionation tray to define and limit the upward motion of the valve. At least one downward projection from the cover plate defines and limits the downward motion of the valve into the tray perforation.
