  • Patent number: 8689605
Abstract: A method of operating a process a combustion analyzer having a measurement cell is provided. The method includes exposing the measurement cell to exhaust of a combustion process where fuel and oxygen are combined in a burner to produce a flame. The measurement cell is heated to a temperature above a flashpoint of the fuel. When a condition is detected, such as a fault or abnormal situation, gas is directed to the measurement cell to form a gaseous barrier between the measurement cell and unburned fuel while the detected condition exists. Once the condition abates, the gas flow is disengaged and process combustion gas measurements are provided.

  • Publication number: 20140078507
Abstract: The invention features devices and methods for collecting and measuring light from external light sources. In general, the devices of the invention feature a light diffusing element, e.g., as a component of a light collector, connected by a light conducting conduit, e.g., a fiber optic cable, to a light measuring device, e.g., a spectrometer. This light diffusing element allows, e.g., for substantially uniform light diffusion across its surface and thus accurate measurements, while permitting the total footprint of the device to remain relatively small and portable. This light diffusing element also allows flexibility in scaling of the device to permit use in a wide range of applications.

  • Patent number: 8655629
Abstract: A computer-implemented land planning system is designed to generate at least one conceptual fit solution to a user-defined land development problem. The system electronically creates at least one candidate solution to the land development problem. The candidate solution incorporates a number of engineering measurements applicable in development of an undeveloped land site. A fitness function quantitatively evaluates the candidate solution based on its fitness. A heuristic problem-solving strategy manipulates the engineering measurements of the candidate solution to achieve a more quantitatively fit solution to the land development problem. A computer output device outputs to a user documentation illustrating the fit solution to the land development problem.

  • Patent number: 8635281
Abstract: Attentive clustering includes constructing an online author network, wherein constructing includes selecting a set of source nodes (S), a set of outlink targets (T) from a selected type or types of hyperlinks, and a set of edges (E) between S and T defined by the selected hyperlinks, constructing a matrix of source nodes in S linked to targets in T?, wherein T? is derived by normalizing nodes in T, and partitioning the network into at least one set of source nodes with a similar linking history to form an attentive cluster and at least one set of outlink targets with a similar citation profile to form an outlink bundle. Attentive clustering may further include applying any lists specifying inclusion or exclusion of particular nodes. Frequencies of links between attentive clusters and outlink bundles may be measured and analyzed.

  • Patent number: 8548933
Abstract: A method and system for implementing a weighted belief network that assists collaborative users in making decisions. A belief network structure is employed that further includes user controlled weighting and biasing factors to adjust the probabilities for the various nodes. The various participants have the opportunity to make adjustments to the weighting and credibility of the evidence and participants in the decision making process in order to arrive at what may be perceived as a more objective outcome. As the collaborative environment is established and the belief network is built, each user can apply various weighting and bias scenarios from their own perspective thereby allowing each discrete user to work out their various suspicions regarding the bias of other participants or the actual weight of a discrete piece of supporting evidence in the context of the entire belief network.
