Patent number: 6099473Abstract: The present disclosure teaches a system for analyzing ultrasonic image that provides an output of a measurement of muscle width from an ultrasonic image input of an outline of a muscle from an animal or carcass. The muscle that is used in the preferred embodiment is the longissimus dorsi muscle when an ultrasonic scan is taken in a transverse direction relative to the backbone. The analysis is done with a computer that receives the electronic input of rows and columns of gray level pixel data from an ultrasonic scan image of the outline of the muscle of the animal or carcass. The software is set to select a region of the ultrasonic image input to analyze to determine a first edge of the muscle. The selected region is divided into subregions Sj,.sub.k. J designates a row and ranges between 1 and n. K designates a column and ranges between 1 and o such that o is greater than 1. The subregions are aligned in rows and columns throughout the ultrasonic image input.Type: GrantFiled: February 5, 1999Date of Patent: August 8, 2000Assignee: Animal Ultrasound Services, Inc.Inventors: Yujun Liu, James R. Patent number: 5617864Abstract: Disclosed herein is a system for positioning an ultrasonic transducer where the user can see the positioning device and a display of the image being generated at the same time. This system solves the problem of the user having to look away from the transducer to see the image. The method comprises positioning a display screen to show the ultrasonic image being generated to the user such that the user can see the positioning of the transducer and the image on the display screen at the same time. To accomplish this the display screen can be incorporated into or mounted directly mounted onto the transducer housing. Once the user properly positions the transducer and is satisfied with the image, a image capture signal can be sent by the user. Once the image is captured it can be sent to an associated computer for analysis, printed or saved for archiving, etc.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 1995Date of Patent: April 8, 1997Assignee: Animal Ultrasound Services, Inc.Inventors: James R. Patent number: 5316003Abstract: The transducer positioning apparatus is for positioning an ultrasonic transducer on an animal or carcass to be evaluated by ultrasonic detection equipment. The apparatus includes a support arm. A tail bone pin extends from the first end of the support arm and is for locating the transducer with respect to a tail region of the animal or carcass. A back position pin extends from the support arm and is for locating the transducer with respect to a backbone of the animal or carcass. A transducer support unit is included at the second end of the elongated support arm and is for positioning the transducer such that the transducer is parallel to the backbone. The method of positioning an ultrasonic transducer or an animal or carcass to be evaluated by ultrasonic detection equipment, is novel.Type: GrantFiled: July 24, 1992Date of Patent: May 31, 1994Assignee: Animal Ultrasound Services, Inc.Inventor: James R. Patent number: 5303708Abstract: The present invention includes method and apparatus for grading a poultry carcass intended for human consumption. An ultrasound machine is provided which includes a probe for transmitting and receiving ultrasound signals such that the machine is capable of producing a image of a breast muscle of the carcass. The probe is positioned on the carcass parallel to the keel such that the image of the breast muscle of the carcass is detected by the ultrasound machine. A breast muscle size indicator of the breast muscle is determined from the detected image. The calculation of a grade for the carcass is based upon the ratio of the indicator to the weight of the carcass. The determination of the breast muscle size indicator can be performed by an image analyzer and pattern recognition equipment modified to recognize the breast muscle image. The probe can be positioned automatically by probe location equipment automatically.Type: GrantFiled: July 27, 1992Date of Patent: April 19, 1994Assignee: Animal Ultrasound Services, Inc.Inventor: James R. Patent number: 5140988Abstract: Method and apparatus for determining a condemnation condition in a post mortem animal intended for human consumption is taught hereinabove. The apparatus includes an ultrasound machine, including a probe, wherein the probe is positioned on the animal such that a cross-sectional image of the portion of the animal to be examined is shown. An image analyzer determines and identifies a pattern of anatomically distinct tissue and bone outline of the animal shown on the image. Pattern recognition equipment compares the pattern of tissue and bone outline with a norm reference for a healthy animal and at least one known deformation pattern for tissue of animals requiring condemnation. If a greater correlation with one of the known deformation patterns than with the norm reference pattern is shown then, means for indicating a condemnation condition for the animal are activated. Also taught hereinabove, is a method of developing further tests for determining a condemnation condition in an animal.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 1991Date of Patent: August 25, 1992Assignee: Animal Ultrasound Services, Inc.Inventors: James R.
