Patent number: 6657711Abstract: An apparatus for measuring the dynamic characteristics of the vehicle wheel alignment in non-contact fashion with high accuracy is disclosed. A laser light source (4) emits a laser beam of a predetermined geometric pattern toward the wheel side surface. A laser beam control device (6) controls the width of the laser beam in such a manner as to be radiated only in a predetermined range of the wheel side surface. Two laser light sources (120), (121) emit non-parallel laser beams. A photdetecting device (122) receives the two laser beams and converts them to two corresponding image data. A processing unit calculates the distance between the two images based on the two image data and calculates the wheel alignment based on the same distance.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 2000Date of Patent: December 2, 2003Assignees: Anzen Motor Car Co., Ltd., Mitsubishi Precision Co., Ltd.Inventors: Hideo Kitagawa, Hiroshi Takagi

Patent number: 6400451Abstract: A non-contact type wheel alignment measuring apparatus includes a fixed-focal-length lens and a pair of light sources located on the opposite sides of the lens for projecting a pair of laser beams onto the side surface of a wheel to be measured. The apparatus also includes a CCD sensor on which images reflecting from the wheel are formed and the distance between the two images is detected as a function of pixels of CCD sensor between them. The information of this distance (or the number of pixels) is utilized to determine the distance between the measuring apparatus and a point of interest on the wheel. With two or more such information for different locations on the wheel, its alignment characteristic, such as toe-in and camber angles, can be determined.Type: GrantFiled: February 10, 2000Date of Patent: June 4, 2002Assignee: Anzen Motor Car Co., Ltd.Inventors: Yutaka Fukuda, Kenji Funakoshi

Patent number: 6018878Abstract: Detection of angles associated with wheel alignment of a vehicle can be carried out properly at all times according to the present wheel alignment examining apparatus irrespective of the size of a wheel to be examined. The present apparatus includes a sensor member (105, 106) pressed against a side surface of a wheel (11) to be examined and thus the sensor member rotates together with the wheel to be examined. Various inclination angles, such as toe, camber, caster and king pin angles, are detected from a displacement of the sensor member during its rotation. Use may be made of either a Cardan suspension mechanism or link mechanism for supporting the sensor member. When use is made of a link mechanism, toe and camber angles can be detected by the same encoder.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 1997Date of Patent: February 1, 2000Assignee: Anzen Motor Car Co., Ltd.Inventors: Yutaka Fukuda, Yukio Higuchi, Ryoichi Abe

Patent number: 5355586Abstract: A wheel examining system for examining a two-axle or three-axle vehicle is provided. The wheel examining system includes a wheel examining apparatus for examining a wheel in particular as to its alignment. A wheel guide apparatus is provided for guiding a wheel into a predetermined examining site. The wheel guide apparatus includes a plurality of rollers arranged in different levels and orientations so that the wheel may be smoothly and properly guided into the examining site. A three-axle vehicle examining system includes three different examining sections one of which may be shifted in a transverse direction to determine a discrepancy in alignment of three axles. A wheel examining apparatus includes a roller clamp unit which includes left-hand contact rollers and right-hand contact rollers which may be brought into the opposite sides of a wheel.Type: GrantFiled: November 22, 1993Date of Patent: October 18, 1994Assignee: Anzen Motor Car Co., Ltd.Inventors: Yutaka Fukuda, Yukio Higuchi, Kiyoshi Masuda, Toshihiko Chisaki

Patent number: 4962664Abstract: A roller clamp type wheel examining apparatus includes a support for supporting thereon a wheel of a vehicle to be examined, a plurality of rollers for clamping the wheel supported on the support from both sides thereof and an angle detector for detecting the angle of orientation of the wheel when clamped by the plurality of rollers. The wheel of a vehicle clamped by the rollers on both sides thereof may be driven to rotate around its own rotating axis to thereby examine dynamic characteristics of the wheel. In this case, the support structure should, for example, include a pair of support rollers for supporting thereon the wheel to be examined in a rotatable manner. The support may include a floating table having a flat top support surface and movable in a horizontal plane translationally as well as rotationally, in which case only the dynamic characteristics of the wheel may be examined since the wheel is not rotatable around its rotating axis.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 1989Date of Patent: October 16, 1990Assignees: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki Kaisha, Anzen Motor Car Co., Ltd.Inventors: Akira Hirano, Shinichi Watanabe, Yutaka Fukuda, Yukio Higuchi, Fumio Shibano, Hiroshi Sekino, Hiroichi Nabeshima, Yukimasa Nishizawa
