Abstract: A user interface on a display enables user perception of information regarding a communications session that leverages an instant messaging platform. The user interface includes an instant messaging application user interface and one or more tear-off elements corresponding to ongoing instant messaging communications sessions. Each tear-off element is configured to enable perception and selection by a user of a corresponding instant messaging communications session. Also, each tear-off element is configured to be independently visually separated from other elements of the instant messaging application user interface and maintained as a separate entity on the instant messaging application user interface.

  • Publication number: 20060248271
Abstract: An automatic browser Web cache resizing system allows a browser to adjust its Web cache size to its environment automatically. When the browser starts up, the browser examines the host computer's hard drive for the amount of the available free space and allocates the maximum reasonable amount of the free space on the hard drive for the Web cache that it needs to run efficiently. During the browser's shutdown sequence, it optionally reexamines the free space on the hard drive and gives up as much of its allocated Web cache space as it can. Every time the browser writes to or reads from the Web cache, the browser checks to see if its Web cache allocation is needed for free space. If the browser sees that the amount of free space is low, it will give up some of its Web cache space that it allocated. Another preferred embodiment of the invention integrates the invention with the operating system of the host computer. The browser requests memory from the operating system.

  • Patent number: 7124166
Abstract: Using switching technologies to duplicate packets of a digital stream (e.g., digital video stream) sent from one workstation to multiple recipient workstations, where the switching technologies enable the multiple streams sent from the switch to the recipient workstations to be generated from a single digital stream sent from the sending workstation to the switch. Data units, such as video data units, may be transmitted by using a switch to enable receipt of a stream of data units including a payload portion and an attribute portion from at least two conferencing participants. The switch is used to duplicate at least a subportion of the payload portion of a data unit within the stream of data units, and to enable access to the duplicated subportion of the data unit by two or more conferencing participants.

  • Patent number: 7114173
Abstract: In a broadband communications system, e.g., a cable system, a broadcast program stream is transmitted to broadcast programming content, and the broadcast program stream is recorded in a headend of the system to enable a user to perform network private video recorder (NPVR) functions (e.g., rewinding, pausing, and fast-forwarding) on the programming content in the recorded program stream. In accordance with the invention, a delay is introduced into the transmission of the broadcast program stream to reduce the unsynchronization between its transmission and that of the recorded program stream. In an illustrative embodiment, the amount of the delay is a function of the time required for recording the broadcast program stream and processing a user request for a recorded program stream. In another embodiment, the amount of the delay is predetermined.

  • Publication number: 20060190481
Abstract: A probabilistic classifier is used to classify data items in a data stream. The probabilistic classifier is trained, and an initial classification threshold is set, using unique training and evaluation data sets (i.e., data sets that do not contain duplicate data items). Unique data sets are used for training and in setting the initial classification threshold so as to prevent the classifier from being improperly biased as a result of similarity rates in the training and evaluation data sets that do not reflect similarity rates encountered during operation. During operation, information regarding the actual similarity rates of data items in the data stream is obtained and used to adjust the classification threshold such that misclassification costs are minimized given the actual similarity rates.

  • Publication number: 20040109611
Abstract: Certain disclosed implementations use digital image processing to reduce the differential resolution among separations or images in film frames, such as, for example, red flare. A location in the red image may be selected using information from another image. The selected location may be modified using information from that other image. The selection may include comparing features of an edge in the first image with features of a corresponding edge in the other image. The modification may include performing wavelet transformations of the two images and copying certain coefficients (or a function of these coefficients) produced by the application of the transformation to the second image to the coefficients produced by the application of the transformation to the first image. The copied coefficients may be correlated with the selected location. Other disclosed techniques vary from the above and may be applied to other fields.

  • Publication number: 20030200261
Abstract: A communication system includes communications terminals connectable to a communications network for users to communicate with a user not necessarily being identified with a given communications terminal. The system monitors whether the user is connected to the network, and annunciates network connection status information relating to other users who are in a set of sought users. In operation, the system provides network connection information relating to users including monitoring whether or not a user is connected to a communications network independent of the communications terminal that user is employing, annunciating to a seeking user, currently connected to the communications network, network connection status information relating to other users who are in a set of sought users, which set is definable by the seeking user, and providing to the seeking user connection address information relating to those sought users who are currently connected to the communications network.

  • Patent number: 6449344
Abstract: The present invention discloses a communication system including a communications network, a multiplicity of communications terminals which are connectable to the communications network and which can be employed by users to communicate via the communications network, the user not necessarily being identified with a given communications terminal, apparatus for monitoring whether or not a user is connected to the communications network irrespective of which of the multiplicity of communications terminals that user is employing, and apparatus for annunciating to a seeking user, currently connected to the communications network via any of the multiplicity of communications terminals, network connection status information relating to other users who are in a set of sought users, which set is definable by the seeking user, and for providing the seeking user connection address information relating to those sought users who are currently connected to the communications network.
