Patent number: 8184423Abstract: An automatic hold switch is disclosed. The automatic hold switch provides a means for automatically switching a hold feature on and off. When the hold feature is on, one or more input devices of a portable electronic device are disabled or prevented from providing input signals. When the hold feature is off, one or more input devices of a portable electronic device are enabled or allowed to provide input signals. Because the user no longer has to manually control the hold feature, the number of actions that need to be taken by the user is reduced. In one example, the automatic hold switch is embodied with light sensors that detect when the device is in a dark environment and when the device is in a light environment. A dark environment indicates to the portable electronic device that the user wishes not to input and therefore the hold feature is turned on. A lighted environment indicates to the portable electronic device that the user wishes to input and therefore the hold feature is turned off.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 2011Date of Patent: May 22, 2012Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventor: Fletcher R. Patent number: 8185533Abstract: A system and method to navigate through a media item catalog and generate recommendations using behavioral metrics such as correlation metrics (FIGS. 1,2) from a knowledge base (400) of mediasets (FIG. 4, 1-7). One implementation uses a knowledge base comprising a collection of mediasets such as groupings of selected video items. Various metrics (Metric 1-Metric m) among media items (m1 . . . ) are considered by analyzing how the media items are grouped to form the sets in the knowledge base (400). Such metrics preferably are stored in a matrix (100) that allows the system to dynamically build appropriate navigation lists (FIG. 3) from media items that a user selects (FIG. 5).Type: GrantFiled: May 12, 2011Date of Patent: May 22, 2012Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Francisco J. Patent number: 8185942Abstract: In the computer client-server context, typically used in the Internet for communicating between a central server and user computers (clients), a method is provided for token passing which enhances security for client-server communications. The token passing is opaque, that is tokens as generated by the client and server are different and can be generated only by one or the other but can be verified by the other. This approach allows the server to remain stateless, since all state information is maintained at the client side. This operates to authenticate the client to the server and vice versa to defeat hacking attacks, that is, penetrations intended to obtain confidential information. The token as passed includes encrypted values including encrypted random numbers generated separately by the client and server, and authentication values based on the random numbers and other verification data generated using cryptographic techniques.Type: GrantFiled: July 8, 2008Date of Patent: May 22, 2012Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Augustin J. Patent number: 8182139Abstract: Temperature sensing circuitry is used for thermal management of an electronic device. The temperature sensing circuitry includes at least one thermistor placed at or near a component of the electronic device. The temperature sensing circuitry also includes a high-precision resistor for calibration purposes. The resistance of the resistor is equivalent to the resistance of the thermistor at a reference temperature. A calibration reading is obtained using a set current that is being passed through the resistor. An error present in the temperature sensing circuitry is determined based on the calibration reading and a design value. A temperature measurement associated with the component is then made using the thermistor, while the set current is being passed through the thermistor. The error is corrected in the temperature measurement of the component. Other embodiments are also described.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 2008Date of Patent: May 22, 2012Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Hugo Fiennes, Keith Alan Cox
