Patent number: 7346106Abstract: An encoding manager performs a first-pass encoding of a video sequence, collecting modeling data concerning the sequence in the process. The encoding manager utilizes collected data to construct a model concerning the sequence, the model including bit overhead for each frame and data concerning transitions that occur during the sequence. The encoding manager uses the data model to generate a rate profile for the video sequence, avoiding buffer underflow by allocating bits from hard to easy segments as needed. The encoding manager utilizes the rate profile to perform a second-pass encoding of the video sequence, adjusting quantization and bit rate for frames as necessary to avoid underflow and conform to the bit budget for the video sequence.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 2003Date of Patent: March 18, 2008Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Wenqing Jiang, Jian Lu, Gregory K. Patent number: 7345671Abstract: Improved approaches for users of computing devices to interact with graphical user interfaces are described. According to one aspect, a rotational user action supplied by a user at a user input device is transformed into linear action with respect to a graphical user interface. According to another aspect, a portion of an extended list of items is displayed by a graphical user interface and, through rotational user actions at a user input device, the portion of the list being displayed can be varied with welcomed ease of use. Although the type of computing device can vary, the improved approaches are particularly well-suited for use with a portable media player.Type: GrantFiled: September 26, 2002Date of Patent: March 18, 2008Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Jeffrey L. Publication number: 20080062659Abstract: The present invention can relate to multiple-connector assemblies for use in, for example, electronic devices. Each of the connectors are constrained to another connector by aligning one or more complementary sets of reference features. A locating bracket may be used to couple multiple connectors together. Alternatively, the connectors may be coupled to each other directly. The electronic device also may include a retainer coupled to the connectors (either directly or indirectly through the locating bracket). The retainer and a surface of one of the connectors may form a single plane to which an end cap of the housing may be coupled, thereby accurately locating the end cap with respect to the connectors. The present invention also can relate to methods of manufacturing such an electronic device.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 11, 2006Publication date: March 13, 2008Applicant: Apple Computer, Inc.Inventors: Douglas Joseph Weber, Pinida Jan Moolsintong

Publication number: 20080063085Abstract: Systems, apparatuses and methods whereby a base coded video signal is provided to a decoder having a set of post-processing stages. The base coded video signal can be decoded to produce a base decoded video signal. Post-processing of the base decoded video signal can be used to produce an enhanced quality video output signal. Application of a post-processing stage can be implemented according to the capabilities of the decoder and/or the instantaneous operating parameters of the decoder and/or characteristics of a display. A control signal, communicated over a dedicated channel separate from the base coded video signal, can be used initiate and/or aid implementation of a post-processing stage. The control signal can also provide information to assist/manage the decoding of the base coded video signal. The use of additional post-processing stages increases the complexity of an overall decoding process while improving the quality of a resulting reproduced video sequence.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 11, 2006Publication date: March 13, 2008Applicant: APPLE COMPUTER, INC.Inventors: Hsi-Jung WU, Ionut HRISTODORESCU, Christian L. Patent number: 7343562Abstract: Methods and systems for providing graphical user interfaces are described. overlaid, Information-bearing windows whose contents remain unchanged for a predetermined period of time become translucent. The translucency can be graduated so that, over time, if the window's contents remain unchanged, the window becomes more translucent. In addition to visual translucency, windows according to the present invention also have a manipulative translucent quality. Upon reaching a certain level of visual translucency, user input in the region of the window is interpreted as an operation on the underlying objects rather than the contents of the overlaying window.Type: GrantFiled: November 5, 2003Date of Patent: March 11, 2008Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Thomas Bonura, Kim Silverman
