Publication number: 20050150627Abstract: A variable frequency foil (VFF) box assembly and mechanisms for moving individual foils/foil beams and individual foil beam sets relative to each other to adjust the frequency of a paper making machine, and method of use are provided. The VFF box assembly allows for continuously and uniformly adjusting the pitch distances of individual foils within foil sets over a finite range, and also adjusting the distance between foil sets during the continuous operation of a paper making machine. Also provided is a variable frequency assembly comprising a combination of dewatering elements such as one or more foil elements and table rolls, a multi-surfaced foil element, and/or an adjustable angle foil element.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 12, 2004Publication date: July 14, 2005Applicant: Appleton International, Inc.Inventors: Thomas Frawley, Mark VanRens, Patrick Theut, Alan Wouters

Patent number: 6554754Abstract: An improved bowed roll assembly and system that can be adjusted during operation to alter critical speeds to outside the range of the operational speed of the assembly, and methods of altering critical speeds of the roll assembly during its operation to inhibit harmonic vibration are provided. In one embodiment, the bowed roll assembly system includes a programmable logic controller (PLC) and accelerometer, and the critical speeds of the roll assembly are “learned” by the PLC which triggers changes to the pressure of the pressure applying member of the assembly to alter the roll's stiffness and the critical speeds.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 2001Date of Patent: April 29, 2003Assignee: Appleton International, Inc.Inventor: Mark R. Patent number: 6241854Abstract: A composite is provided for forming a sealing strip for use in a suction roll of a papermaking machine or other device for maintaining a seal when brought into contact with a surface and that has extended usability and wear. The composite is a blend of a nitrile rubber, graphite, carbon black, and at least one of a silicone oil or polytetrafluoroethylene as a lubricating agent, optionally with a phenolic resin. The sealing strip has silicone oil and/or polytetrafluoroethylene evenly distributed over the contact surface, and when installed into a suction roll or other device, provides a reduced frictional surface.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 1999Date of Patent: June 5, 2001Assignee: Appleton International, Inc.Inventor: Thomas Edward Frawley, Jr.
