Patent number: 10158747Abstract: Apparatus, methods, and machine-readable articles of manufacture improve reliability and scalability of a messaging system. In some embodiments, the system's configuration data and subscriber information are stored in a central repository of a core node, and replicated to one or more non-core nodes. Data replication may be performed in real-time or near real-time, periodically, sporadically, or otherwise. Nodes may rely on the replicated data to provide the system's subscribers and outside callers with services that do not involve updating of configuration or subscriber data. In this way, the non-core nodes may continue to process calls when the core node is unavailable. For example, the non-core nodes can route calls to the appropriate subscribers without relying on the core. As another example, the non-core nodes can take messages from callers when the core node is unavailable. The messages may be queued for posting and delivery when the core node becomes available.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 2017Date of Patent: December 18, 2018Assignees: Applied Voice & Speech Technologies, Inc., XMediusInventors: Douglas G. Patent number: 10009472Abstract: Systems, methods, and machine-readable articles of manufacture enable private notification of a participant in a telephone conference. In representative embodiments, a system receives a telephone call intended for a first conference participant, generates an informative announcement containing information regarding the call, mixes the informative announcement with the conference audio, and privately plays the mixed audio to the first participant. In other representative embodiments, the system concurrently generates a non-informative announcement, mixes the non-informative announcement with the conference audio, and plays the second mixed audio to the other conference participant or participants. In this way, the first participant is notified of the incoming call while simultaneously listening to the conference audio, and the information regarding the call is not shared with the other conference participant or participants.Type: GrantFiled: July 7, 2016Date of Patent: June 26, 2018Assignee: Applied Voice & Speech Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Karl Daniel Gierach, Michael V. Patent number: 9319278Abstract: Apparatus, methods, and machine-readable articles of manufacture facilitate configuration of a networked messaging system. In some embodiments, nodes of the system are automatically interrogated to obtain current configuration information of each of the nodes, and a configuration file with the nodes' current configuration information is generated and stored in a format that is readily editable. Exemplary formats include spreadsheet, comma separated variables, and other text formats. An administrator is allowed to access and edit the configuration file, resulting in an updated configuration file with updated configuration information. Editing may include adding and removing servers, creating and removing digital networking mailboxes or links on the nodes, and other configuration changes.Type: GrantFiled: January 14, 2011Date of Patent: April 19, 2016Assignee: Applied Voice & Speech Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Steven J. Patent number: 8370144Abstract: A method for identifying end of voiced speech within an audio stream of a noisy environment employs a speech discriminator. The discriminator analyzes each window of the audio stream, producing an output corresponding to the window. The output is used to classify the window in one of several classes, for example, (1) speech, (2) silence, or (3) noise. A state machine processes the window classifications, incrementing counters as each window is classified: speech counter for speech windows, silence counter for silence, and noise counter for noise. If the speech counter indicates a predefined number of windows, the state machine clears all counters. Otherwise, the state machine appropriately weights the values in the silence and noise counters, adds the weighted values, and compares the sum to a limit imposed on the number of non-voice windows. When the non-voice limit is reached, the state machine terminates processing of the audio stream.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 2010Date of Patent: February 5, 2013Assignee: Applied Voice & Speech Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Karl D. Patent number: 8320531Abstract: A unified messaging system enables a subscriber to log into the system remotely and compose and send text messages, such as email messages, using predefined templates and sound input. The sound input may be DTMF or speech. After the subscriber selects an appropriate template, the system confirms the template, and asks the subscriber to provide values for prompted variables, such as dates and times. The system then generates an email message as defined by the selected template and the values of the prompted variables provided by the subscriber. The email message may also include automatic variables, such as the subscriber's name, and company name. The generated email message may be a new message, a reply message, or a forwarding message. The reply and forwarding messages may be generated in response to received email, or in response to other received messages, such as voice mail messages and facsimiles.Type: GrantFiled: February 1, 2011Date of Patent: November 27, 2012Assignee: Applied Voice & Speech Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Roger E. Patent number: 8290140Abstract: Apparatus, methods, and machine-readable articles of manufacture enable a telephone system to distinguish between actual events and echoes. Events may include conferees' voice and DTMF commands. In selected embodiments, the system categorizes an event received on one channel as a real event if the energy of the event's waveform is greater than concurrent energy of every other channel of the same conference. Otherwise, the event is stored. When the system receives a new event of the same type on a channel of the same conference during a predetermined period, it compares the energies of the new and stored events. If the energy of the new event exceeds that of the stored event, the new event becomes the stored event, and the old stored event is ignored. At the end of the period, the stored event is categorized as a real event and forwarded to appropriate application code.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 2010Date of Patent: October 16, 2012Assignee: Applied Voice & Speech Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Karl Daniel Gierach, Michael V. Patent number: 7248676Abstract: A method of operating a call management system enables a subscriber to acknowledge a call, without taking the call. When the system receives the call, it identifies the called subscriber, obtains caller information, and presents the caller information to the subscriber when notifying the subscriber of the pending call. Caller information is information relating to the caller or to the call, such as the caller's name and telephone number. If the subscriber chooses to acknowledge the call, the system records an acknowledgement message from the subscriber. The system then plays the acknowledgement message to the caller. After playing the acknowledgement message, the system offers the caller an opportunity to leave a message for the subscriber. The system may allow such message exchange between the caller and subscriber to continue, enabling the subscriber to acknowledge the caller's additional messages, and the caller to leave messages in response to the acknowledgements.Type: GrantFiled: September 2, 2004Date of Patent: July 24, 2007Assignee: Applied Voice & Speech Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Roger E. Patent number: 7177402Abstract: Embodiments of the invention are directed to automated reception systems that may receive voice information indicating action to be taken by the system. The automated reception system may receive a call and transmit a speech message to the caller identifying actions that the caller may ask the system to take. The caller may verbally select an action for the system to execute. Possible actions may depend upon the system context and information about possible actions may be provided to the caller through dynamically generated messages. The caller may also access voicemail or electronic mail messages using embodiments of the invention. Furthermore, in some embodiments, a caller may be able to control a separate communication session using voice or other commands input during a telephone session.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 2001Date of Patent: February 13, 2007Assignee: Applied Voice & Speech Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Michael D. Patent number: 7092515Abstract: A voice command (VC)-to-DTMF interfacing system that allows existing DTMF-driven systems to be interacted with by a caller using voice commands. The VC-to-DTMF interfacing system translates the voice command from a caller into the DTMF codes which are then played through a port for receipt by the DTMF-driven system. In a first mode, the voice commands from the caller and the pre-recorded messages of the DTMF-driven system are echo cancelled. In a second mode, a voice message is directly streamed to the DTMF-driven system through an enabled port patch.Type: GrantFiled: September 6, 2003Date of Patent: August 15, 2006Assignee: Applied Voice & Speech Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Karl Gierachf
