    Abstract: Compositions comprising sun-care actives and self adapting polymers are disclosed. Self adapting polymers align themselves with the hydrophilic group pointing to the surface during application thus delivering an aesthetically pleasing surface to the consumers with a pleasant after feel. These polymers then rearrange upon contact with water so that the hydrophobic groups now point to the surface which then increases the water resistance of the formulation.

    Abstract: A stable fluid polymer suspension is composed of at least one water soluble polysaccharide polymer in an aqueous carrier fluid in which the polysaccharide polymer does not significantly swell or dissolve where the polysaccharide polymer in the aqueous carrier fluid has the measured properties of:i) rendering the polymer(s) insoluble, resulting in a cloudy dispersion,ii) limiting the swelling of insolubilized polymer(s), leading to a polymer sediment volume of a 1 weight percent polymer dispersion to less than 1%, andiii) preventing phase separation for at least one week.This invention also Includes a method of preparing the stable fluid polymer suspension having the above mentioned measured properties. The stable aqueous fluid suspension of this invention is a clear, odorless, and stable formulation and is used in cosmetics, personal care, and household products.

    Abstract: A process is provided for making alkylated galactomannans comprising reacting a galactomannan in the presence of sodium hydroxide, water, and an alkyl halide to form a reaction mass under pressure and at temperatures greater than 50.degree. C. in amounts and for a time sufficient to achieve a degree of substitution greater than 2.4. Organic volatiles from the reaction mass are stripped and the reaction mass is then washed in water at temperatures high enough to prevent dissolution or agglomeration of the alkylated galactomannan. This washed product is then dried and pulverized to suitable particle size. This product is useful in applications requiring thickening and rheology modification of formulations containing organic solvents or formation of coatings/film from organic solvents. The products are also useful in pharmaceutical applications.

    Abstract: An alcohol-free and encapsulated nitrocellulose which is primarily suitable for printing inks, varnishes and coatings consists of 65-75% nitrocellulose, 3-8% water, 10-15% non-solvating plasticizer and 10-15% of an active solvent suitable for both nitrocellulose and the plasticizer. A product is produced by drying water-wet nitrocellulose and spraying on a solution of plasticizer in solvent. Upon blending to a uniform consistency, the nitrocellulose becomes partially dissolved and encapsulated within the plasticizer/solvent mixture. The advantages of the invention are improved safety indicated by a lower rate of burning and reduced environmental pollution wherein the product is alcohol-free such that no additional alcohol recovery system is required.
