    Abstract: Water wet nitrocellulose, butyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate monomers and phosphate surfactant are emulsified into an oil-in-water emulsion and polymerized to produce a nitrocellulose/acrylic latex emulsion with a particle size below 0.25 microns. Wood finishing lacquers produced from this latex emulsion are equivalent in performance to solvent lacquers while lowering VOC to below 2.3 lb/gal.

    Abstract: Cellulose ethers are disclosed which have sufficient nonionic substitution to render them water soluble and which are further modified with a C.sub.10 to C.sub.24 long chain alkylaryl group in an amount between 0.2% by weight and the amount which makes them less than 1% by weight soluble in water. Hydroxyethylcellulose is a preferred water soluble cellulose ether for modification according to the invention. These products exhibit substantially improved viscosifying effects compared to their unmodified cellulose ether counterparts, and provide good leveling and sag resistance in latex paints. Preferred alkylaryl groups are nonylphenyl, dodecylphenyl, and dinonylphenyl. Included are cellulose ethers with spacer groups of various lengths between the alkylaryl group and the connecting group to the cellulose molecule.

Higher amounts of potash can be incorporated in the liquid fertilizer along with sulphur and nitrogen nutrients.

    Abstract: Water demand in an aqueous joint compound composition is increased by incorporating a blend of water soluble polymer (WSP) and crosslinked polyacrylic acid water demand polymer (WDP) with a WSP to WDP blend ratio of 9:1 to 25:1. A preferred WSP is hydrophobically modified hydroxyethylcellulose. This blend may also be used for aqueous tile adhesives.In the joint compound the thickener, comprising water-soluble cellulose ether(s) and water-insoluble but swellable polyacrylic acid or salt thereof, the acrylic component gives increased joint compound viscosity without the need to decrease water level or increase thickener level.

    Abstract: A nonionic cellulose ether such as hydroxyalkylcellulose, alkylcellulose or an alkylhydroxyalkylcellulose hydrophobically modified with a C.sub.4 to C.sub.24 alkyl or an arylalkyl group is suspended by a low molecular weight polysaccharide and below 10% by weight salt to provide a fluidized polymer suspension. The process for manufacture involves preparing an aqueous polysaccharide solution and adding a nonionic cellulose ether while stirring. Anionic, nonionic and cationic suspending polymers such as CMC, CM Guar, HEC and cationic starch may be used. Sodium carbonate is a preferred salt.
