  • Patent number: 5303901
Abstract: A blowing lance for refining metals by blowing a gas onto a surface of a metal bath is presented. This lance has an adjustable tuyere for generating a supersonic refining gas flow and a blowing head with a set of fixed tuyeres opening into a front dome of the blowing head and dividing the supersonic gas flow into individual free jets. A cyclic modulator modulates a flow rate through the set of fixed tuyeres so that the flow rate in a first subset of tuyeres does not vary synchronously with the flow rate in a second subset of tuyeres, i.e., the flow rates in both subsets of tuyeres increase or decrease at the same time and they do not reach their minimum value or their maximum value at the same moment.

  • Patent number: 5227118
Abstract: The present invention relates to a refining lance. It relates more particularly to a lance of the kind used for supplying from above, onto a metal bath, the oxidizing gas required for refining the molten metal contained in a metallurgical vessel. It includes a rotating device to divide the refining gas flow into an even number of separate gas jets that are more or less identical. The gas jets exit the head of the lance in angles which are substantially equal with respect to the longitudinal axis of the lance but in diametrically opposite directions with respect to the said axis.

  • Patent number: 5173198
Abstract: An improved device used for teeming liquid metal out of a metallurgical container comprises an efficacious cross section which is formed by the surface of the discharge channel available for the outflow of the metal during the progressive opening of the upper outflow passage. This efficacious cross section is initially kept small and over at least a noticeable part of its length the discharge channel is provided with an active passage portion showing a shaped cross section. This shaped portion stretches down to the lower extremity of the channel and has a form comparable to that one of a star with three to four branches, whereas the grounds of these branches extend axially in the direction of the outflow and serve as guides to the metal during its discharge.

  • Patent number: 5148642
Abstract: In antiseismic steel structural works of the frame type or of the truss type, which are constituted by columns and by girders fastened to the columns, the girders of different shapes show, at least in the vicinity of one of their extremities, a dissipative zone constituted by a reduction of the actual cross section. The reduction of the actual cross section consists either in differently shaped indentations in the edges of the flanges of the girder or in round or polygonal holes which are regularly distributed over the flanges and have a small diameter.

  • Patent number: 4845970
Abstract: Two rolls are supported laterally in bearings in two pairs of side-by-side members with the members being supported by a frame. Adjustment of synchronization and registration is accomplished by adjusting the relative positions of the side-by-side members in or against the rolling direction. The relative positions of the rolls can be adjusted by use of notches engraved in the ends of the rolls; and can be continuously monitored with the aid of a stroboscope light. Magnetic signal devices and other sensors are also suitable for monitoring. Continuous adjustment of roll position is accomplished through low-pitch screws or through hydraulic or electric positioning motors.

  • Patent number: 4774999
Abstract: At the latest before response of the measuring mechanism which senses the filling state of the melt tundish the opening rate of the outlet of the tundish is brought to near its standard opening rate and, after obtaining a clear signal from the filling state measuring mechanism or reaching a first predetermined filling height, the withdrawal mechanism is switched on and the withdrawal speed delayed for determination of the opening rate of the outlet. Advantageously the speed of the discharge rollers is measured by a tachometer which transmits a normalized signal which is then multiplied by a signal determined by the standard opening rate. The resultant signal controls the opening rate of the outlet.

  • Patent number: 4767036
Abstract: An apparatus and method is presented for emptying metallurgical vessels, and in particular steelmaking converters containing metal and slag, whereby the slag is effectively separated from the metal during pouring. The apparatus includes at least on permeable refractory element located near the flow hole. An agitating gas is fed through the refractory element thereby creating a bubbling froth which effectively obstructs most of the slag from being carried along by the vortex which forms above the vertical flow hole.
