Publication number: 20230220319Abstract: Photobioreactor devices and units for the production of biomass and remediation of environmental contamination are provided. The bioreactor devices comprise a membrane photobioreactor (PBR), the PBR comprising a liquid medium, at least one photosynthetic microorganism, and at least one outer membrane layer, wherein the membrane layer is comprised of a material that is permeable to gas transfer across the membrane layer; and further comprise a chamber defining a gaseous atmosphere enclosed within, wherein the PBR is located inside the chamber. The devices also comprise a control system which controls the composition of the atmosphere within the chamber. Gas transfer occurs across the membrane layer of the PBR, between the PBR and the atmosphere comprised within the chamber. Systems comprising the devices are provided as well as methods of using the devices for the production of biomass, remediation of wastewater and removal of atmospheric pollutants.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 5, 2023Publication date: July 13, 2023Applicant: ARBOREA LTDInventor: Julian Paul MELCHIORRI

Publication number: 20220213427Abstract: An apparatus is provided for the production of biomass or a bioproduct, the apparatus comprising: at least one elongate bioreactor, the bioreactor comprised of at least one outer membrane layer that defines a substantially tubular compartment that is capable of being filled with a liquid or gel, wherein the membrane layer is comprised of a material that is permeable to gas transfer across the membrane layer. A chamber is provided comprising walls that define and enclose a gaseous atmosphere within. At least a part of the bioreactor is located inside the chamber. A control system controls the composition of the atmosphere within the chamber and gas transfer occurs across the membrane layer of the bioreactor between the tubular compartment and the atmosphere comprised within the chamber. Methods of using the apparatus in order to manufacture biomass are also provided.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 4, 2020Publication date: July 7, 2022Applicant: ARBOREA LTDInventor: Julian Paul MELCHIORRI

Publication number: 20200248114Abstract: Photobioreactor devices and units for the production of biomass and remediation of environmental contamination are provided. The bioreactor devices comprise (i) a photobioreactor unit comprising a first membrane layer and a second membrane layer, the two membrane layers arranged such that at least a portion of the first membrane layer is directly bonded to at least a portion of the second membrane layer in order to form a defined boundary around non-bonded portions of the first and second membrane layers, thereby defining the photobioreactor unit capable of containing a fluid, wherein at least one of the first and second layers is translucent, and wherein at least a part of the first and second membrane layers is permeable to gases. The permeability coefficient of oxygen through the first and/or second membrane layer is suitably not less than about 100 Barrer, typically not less than about 300 Barrer, and suitably not less than about 500 Barrer.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 1, 2016Publication date: August 6, 2020Applicant: ARBOREA LTDInventors: Julian Paul MELCHIORRI, Tristan DELL
