Patent number: 6326069Abstract: A sampler pouch having a lower barrier layer; an upper barrier layer peelably sealed to the lower barrier layer to form a cavity; and a fluidic sample material absorbed within an internal supportive structure within the cavity. The internal supportive structure is inert and substantially retains the sample material when subjected to compressive forces, thereby reducing internal pressure against the peel seal and allowing for the use of low strength peel seals.Type: GrantFiled: June 13, 1997Date of Patent: December 4, 2001Assignee: Arcade, Inc.Inventors: Roger Barnett, Steven Jeffrey Greenland

Patent number: 6071569Abstract: A sampler containing a sample material applied to a substrate with a cover over the sample material. Sample material is deposited on the substrate by spray depositing the sample material on the substrate, which causes the sample material particles to lie in a substantially flat orientation. To enable the spraying of a material, a slurry is formed by mixing the sample material with a suitable carrier. The carrier then evaporates, leaving the sample material on the substrate.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 1998Date of Patent: June 6, 2000Assignee: Arcade, Inc.Inventor: Blaine C. Stambaugh

Patent number: 5992889Abstract: An advertisement page for binding to or within a publication, comprising a first opposing layer; a second opposing layer attached to the first opposing layer; and a sample material disposed between the first and second opposing layers, wherein an edge of the advertisement page is flush with the outside edge of the pages of the publication. The present invention also relates to an advertisement page with offset and attachment characteristics which allow it to be bound within a publication such that an edge of the advertisement page is flush with the outside edge of the pages of the publication, wherein sample material is maintained between two opposing layers formed from one continuous sheet which has been folded and which may be trimmed at the fold line. The present invention also relates to methods of making such advertisement pages.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 1998Date of Patent: November 30, 1999Assignee: Arcade, Inc.Inventors: Roger Barnett, Hubert F. Patent number: 5980960Abstract: A sampler device for applying sample material having a supporting base with a hole through its width. A stretchy layer, such a latex, is affixed to the base to cover the hole. A cover protects sample material deposited on the stretchy layer. After removing the cover, a user inserts a finger through the hole, stretches the stretchy layer into an applicator shape, and applies or consumes the sample material.Type: GrantFiled: April 25, 1997Date of Patent: November 9, 1999Assignee: Arcade, Inc.Inventor: Nathan Amitai

Patent number: 5879769Abstract: A sampler device having an upper compartment layer; a lower compartment layer; a seal attaching the upper compartment layer to the lower compartment layer, wherein the upper and lower compartment layers and the seal form a compartment or compartments, for containing sample material; and a reinforcement layer for protecting the compartment. The present invention also relates to an easy, inexpensive and reliable method of packaging sample material.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 1996Date of Patent: March 9, 1999Assignee: Arcade, Inc.Inventors: Steven Jeffrey Greenland, Lyudmila Feldman

Patent number: 5445821Abstract: A fragrance sampler has an image of a perfume bottle printed on a paper sheet, the image including a body portion and a cap portion. The part of the sheet on which the cap is printed is removable from the rest of the sheet and is connected to a strip on which microcapsules enclosing droplets of the displayed perfume are adhered. The strip is located underneath the sheet on which the image is printed and is concealed from view until removed along with the cap portion. Effective light adhesion is provided by using gelatin-walled microcapsules, which adhere to the strip without use of binder when applied from an aqueous slurry. Upon detaching the cap portion and pulling it away from the sampler, the perfume-carrying strip is also removed, allowing the strip to be used as an applicator for placing sample particles on the skin of the user. The sampler effectively simulates the bottle used for a particular perfume and correlates the visual image of the bottle with a fragrance that is delivered.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 1993Date of Patent: August 29, 1995Assignee: Arcade, Inc.Inventors: Hubert F. Brown, Paul J. A. French

Patent number: 5093182Abstract: A sustained-release, perfume-containing coating is provided for applications to advertising samplers and the like. A coating is made up of perfume oil having dissolved therein a suitable polymer, and particularly ethyl cellulose, in an amount sufficient to provide a specified viscosity that enables ready application to a substrate by printing and prevents interaction of fragrance oil with a printed image. Advertising samplers having such a coating applied to a paper substrate are also disclosed. The samplers may have a printed image applied thereto underneath the perfume-containing coating. The polymer in the perfume oil serves to modify the oil so as to cause the fragrances therein to be released slowly and without premature release of top-note components. This measure also prevents degradation of the perfume oil from inks used to print images on the sampler.Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 1990Date of Patent: March 3, 1992Assignee: Arcade, Inc.Inventor: Jamie S. Ross

Patent number: 5051305Abstract: Rupturable microcapsules made up of very small droplets or globules of perfume oil encapsulated with an inert polymeric wall are stabilized by providing ethyl cellulose in the perfume oil. This measure prevents escape of higher volatility components of the oil, which would otherwise occur during the preparation process. The stabilized microcapsules may be prepared by a liquid bath encapsulation method wherein ethyl cellulose is first dissolved in the starting oil, and the resulting solution is emulsified by mixing with a gelatin solution in water. The emulsion is then combined with a coacervant and cross-linking agent. Upon cooling the system, a gelatin-based wall coating is deposited around the emulsified particles. Fragrance characteristics of the starting perfume are preserved by this means.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 1988Date of Patent: September 24, 1991Assignee: Arcade, Inc.Inventor: Douglas M. Whitaker, Sr.

Patent number: 5018974Abstract: A coloring book or the like is provided with image areas that release an appropriate fragrance upon being colored or painted by the user. Microcapsules that contain fragrance oil for a particular fragrance associated with the image area are deposited on the image area of the substrate. Inert walls of materials such as gelatin restrain the fragrance within the microcapsules until activated. A color dispenser such as a felt tip marking pen is adapted to include a reactive agent that when applied to the image area in the normal course of coloring will cause release of the fragrance by rupturing or otherwise interacting with the microcapsules such as by diffusing into the microcapsules and replacing and releasing the oil. The reactive agent may be a solvent such as an alcohol or ketone or a surfactant contained in an aqueous solution mixed with the normal ink or paint of the marking pen.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 1990Date of Patent: May 28, 1991Assignees: Arcade, Inc., Perfume International, Inc.Inventors: David W. Carnahan, Paul J. A. French, Richard K. Maury, Gary L. Akins, Philip J. Oaten

Patent number: 4908252Abstract: A fragrance sampler for delivering and dispensing perfumes is disclosed. The sampler includes a sheet of synthetic pile fabric or other fabric with similar tactile properties having embedded therein microcapsules containing a fragrance oil. The fabric material, preferably made of a base sheet of polyethylene having segments of polyethylene fiber or strand aligned perpendicular thereto and prepared by means of a flocking process, provides a velvet-like texture that is pleasant to the touch, inviting the user to apply perfume by gently rubbing it on the skin. Microcapsules embedded in the fabric pile are ruptured by such rubbing, releasing a sample of the perfume. The sampler may be sealed by an impermeable film and may be removably connected to advertising material, such as brochures.Type: GrantFiled: October 26, 1988Date of Patent: March 13, 1990Assignee: Arcade, Inc.Inventors: David W. Carnahan, Edward I. Rabin
