Abstract: A method of computerized analysis of temporally sequential digital images, including (a) determining first shift values between pixels of a first digital image and corresponding pixels of a second digital image; (b) warping the second digital image based on the first shift values to obtain a first warped image in which spatial locations of pixels are varied in relation to the first shift values; (c) determining second shift values between pixels of the first digital image and pixels of the first warped image; and (d) warping the first warped image based on the second shift values to obtain a second warped image in which spatial locations of pixels of the first warped image are varied in relation to the second shift values.

Abstract: The present invention provides a single-stranded oligodeoxyribonucleotide, which (i) comprises from about 5 to 11 bases, at least one of which is a substituted or an unsubstituted O.sup.6 -benzylguanine, and (ii) inactivates human AGT. The present invention also provides a single-stranded oligodeoxyribonucleotide, which can inactivate a mutant human AGT, which either is not inactivated by O.sup.6 -benzylguanine or is less inactivated by O.sup.6 -benzylguanine than by said single-stranded oligodeoxyribonucleotide. A phosphate of the single-stranded oligodeoxyribonucleotide can be replaced by a methylphosphonate or a phosphorothioate. The present invention also provides a composition comprising such an oligodeoxyribonucleotide. In addition, the present invention provides a method of enhancing the effect of an antineoplastic alkylating agent, which alkylates the O.sup.

Abstract: A computer-aided method for detecting, classifying, and displaying candidate abnormalities, such as microcalcifications and interstitial lung disease in digitized medical images, such as mammograms and chest radiographs, a computer programmed to implement the method, and a data structure for storing required parameters, wherein in the classifying method candidate abnormalities in a digitized medical image are located, regions are generated around one or more of the located candidate abnormalities, features are extracted from at least one of the located candidate abnormalities within the region and from the region itself, the extracted features are applied to a classification technique, such as an artificial neural network (ANN) to produce a classification result (i.e., probability of malignancy in the form of a number and a bar graph), and the classification result is displayed along with the digitized medical image annotated with the region and the candidate abnormalities within the region.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for manipulating small dielectric particles. The apparatus and method involves use of a diffractive optical element which receives a laser beam and forms a plurality of light beams. Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for interpolating a first set of multi-dimensional sample values from a second set of multi-dimensional sample values. The method includes the steps of determining a set of relationships between a second sampling space from which the second set of samples are obtained and a first sampling space into which the first set of samples are interpolated and calculating a partial Fourier transform of the second set of samples. The method further includes the steps of obtaining a partial Fourier transform of the first set of samples using the calculated partial Fourier transform of the second set of samples based upon the determined relationship between the first and second space and performing an inverse partial Fourier transform on the obtained partial Fourier transform of the first set of sample values to recover the first set of sample values.
Abstract: Disclosed are lens apparatus in which a beam of charged particlesis brought to a focus by means of a magnetic field, the lens being situated behind the target position. In illustrative embodiments, a lens apparatus is employed in a scanning electron microscopeas the sole lens for high-resolution focusing of an electron beam, and in particular, an electron beam having an accelerating voltage of from about 10 to about 30,000 V. In one embodiment, the lens apparatus comprises an electrically-conducting coil arranged around the axis of the beam and a magnetic pole piece extending along the axis of the beam at least within the space surrounded by the coil. In other embodiments, the lens apparatus comprises a magnetic dipole or virtual magnetic monopole fabricated from a variety of materials, including permanent magnets, superconducting coils, and magnetizable spheres and needles contained within an energy-conducting coil.

Abstract: An autocrine crystal adhesion inhibitor called CAI is an anionic, sialic acid-containing glycoprotein secreted by kidney epithelial cells that blocks adhesion of calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) crystals to the cell surface. Novel amino acid sequences are shown for the amino-acid terminus and 6 interval fragments. Persons may be classified according to risk of developing kidney stones, by measuring the amount of CAI in a biological sample. Treatment efficacy is also monitored by this method. CAI is administered in vivo to prevent nephrolithiasis. A rapid, simple assay to detect agents that inhibit adhesion of COM crystals to the surface of kidney epithelial cells is characterized.
Abstract: A method for preventing the initiation of colon cancer is disclosed. Vitamin D.sub.3 analogues prevented the development of adenomas and adenocarcinomas when administered to rats prior to, and subsequent to, chemically induced tumorigenesis.

Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided for generating a magnetic resonance image of a biotic structure. The method includes the steps of generating a plurality of datasets by modulating a free induction decay of at least some MR detectable nuclei in the biotic structure with a sinusoidally oscillating magnetic field gradient and using the spectroscopic and spatial information present in the acquired signal to approximate a set of instantaneously acquired gradient echoes. The method further includes the step of synthesizing images based upon the approximated acquired gradient echoes.
Abstract: This invention relates generally to methods and compositions for direct detection of specific nucleic acid flanking sequences associated with structural chromosomal aberration breakpoints, by forming hybrids between the sequences and genetic probes, and detecting the probes. In particular aspects, the invention concerns detection of nucleic acid sequences in situ in chromosomes, and more specifically in cells, including interphase cells. Compositions of probes useful for detecting chromosomal translocations, in particular those associated with human leukemias, are also disclosed. An aspect of the invention is labelled probes that, when juxtaposed by formation of an aberration, are distinguishable and provide a pattern different from that of normal cells.
Abstract: Combination of low doses of irradiation and chelerythrine results in increased apoptosis in tumor cells. The doses of either irradiation or chelerythrine alone are such that increased apoptosis or decreased tumor growth or proliferation would not be expected.

Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for acquiring and reconstructing an image. The method includes the steps of obtaining prior knowledge of the image, possibly by coarse sampling of the image and using the obtained prior knowledge of the image to identify relative locations of structures having relatively high contrast edges. The method further includes the steps of prescribing a set of k-space locations based upon the relative locations of the structures in order to achieve comparable eigenvalues of a reconstruction matrix and sampling the k-space at the prescribed k-space locations to obtain k-space sample data. The k-space sample data are decomposed into background data and edge data. The background data are Fourier transformed to reconstruct a background image component. Similarly, subsets of the edge data are Fourier transformed and the reconstruction matrix is used to form a linear combination of these Fourier transformations in order to reconstruct an edge image component.
Abstract: A computerized method for the detection and characterization of disease in an image derived from a chest radiograph, wherein an image in the chest radiograph is processed to determine the ribcage boundary, including lung top edges, right and left ribcage edges, and right and left hemidiaphragm edges. Texture measures including RMS variations of pixel values within regions of interest are converted to relative exposures and corrected for system noise existing in the system used to produce the image. Texture and/or geometric pattern indices are produced. A histogram(s) of the produced index (indices) is produced and values of the histograms) are applied as inputs to a trained artificial neural network, which classifies the image as normal or abnormal.
Abstract: The present invention relates to sebum formation in culture. More particularly, it relates to methods for the identification of compounds that stimulate and inhibit sebum formation in sebocyte culture. Further, it discloses methods for the treatment of conditions relating to excess or deficient sebum formation.
Abstract: Small particles, of macromolecular size or the like, are separated in a liquid by size by applying electric fields of predetermined distributions in time and space to enhance the Brownian motion of the particles so as to favor motion of particles of a particular size. When the particles are separated by size they can be removed from the region in which they have accumulated and they can be collected by size.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for the computerized automatic analysis of lesions in ultrasound images, including the computerized analysis of lesions in the breast, using gradient, gray-level, and texture based measures. Echogenicity features are developed to assess the characteristics of the lesions and in some cases give an estimate of the likelihood of malignancy or of prognosis. The output from the computerized analysis is used in making a diagnosis and/or prognosis. For example, with the analysis of the ultrasound images of the breast, the features can be used to either distinguish between malignant and benign lesions, or distinguish between (i.e., diagnosis) the types of benign lesions such as benign solid lesions (e.g., fibroadenoma), simple cysts, complex cysts, and benign cysts. The ultrasound image features can be merged with those from mammographic and/or magnetic resonance images of the same lesion for classification by means of a common artificial neural network.
