Abstract: Stabilizer compositions for rigid polyvinyl chloride resin compositions are provided comprising an antimony mercaptocarboxylic acid or ester and a mercaptocarboxylic acid ester in amounts within the range from about 90 to about 25 parts antimony mercaptocarboxylic acid or ester and from about 10 to about 75 parts mercaptocarboxylic acid ester; the amount of mercaptocarboxylic acid ester being selected within these ranges to synergize the stabilizing effectiveness of the antimony mercaptocarboxylic acid or ester.Rigid polyvinyl chloride resin compositions also are provided having their resistance to the development of early discoloration enhanced by a stabilizing amount of the antimony mercaptocarboxylic acid or ester and mercaptocarboxylic acid ester, the synergistic effect being particularly evidenced in rigid polyvinyl chloride resin compositions containing both an ortho-dihydric phenol and an alkaline earth metal carboxylate, such as catechol and calcium stearate.
Abstract: Stabilizer compositions comprising a polymer stabilizer and a carbonate ester of cyclic dihydroxy compounds protect synthetic resins against the harmful effects of light having a wavelength less than 400 nanometers. The carbonate ester can be represented by the formula ##STR1## in which a is a number from 1 to 50, A is hydrogen or ##STR2## B is R' or --G--OH, R and R' are independently alkyl, alkoxyalkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aryloxyalkyl, aralkyl, or alkaryl groups, and G in at least one occurrence is a residue of a cycloaliphatic or non-aromatic oxygen heterocyclic dihydroxy compound having 3 to 20 carbon atoms and 1 or 2 rings of 3 to 12 members, of which up to 4 can be oxygen. Additional occurrences of G can be aliphatic glycol or bisphenol residues if desired.
Abstract: Stabilizer mixtures are provided for rigid polyvinyl chloride resin compositions, capable of enhancing the resistance of the polyvinyl chloride resin to the development of an early discoloration during the first five to twenty minutes of heating at elevated processing temperatures, of the order of 375.degree. Such reversible discoloration is not associated with any heat instability, and the resistance of the polyvinyl chloride resin to deterioration when heated at processing temperatures of 150.degree. C. and above is then improved by incorporation of the usual polyvinyl chloride resin heat stabilizers.
