Patent number: 5050582Abstract: A process and apparatus for heating fluids, particularly for heating cooking oil within a deep fat fryer. A fuel-air mixture is introduced and combusted within a combustion tube, preferably of either a power burner or a pulse combustor. The flue gases are discharged from the combustion tube, into a plenum. A baffle arrangement is used to direct the flue gases from the plenum through a passageway, creating flue gas flow in one direction over a primary portion of an outer surface of the fluid container, and then in a counterflow direction over a secondary portion of the outer surface of the fluid container. The flue gases are then discharged from the passageway into a flue stack. According to the process and apparatus of this invention, flue gas temperatures are reduced to about 200.degree. F.-400.degree. F., nitrogen oxides can be reduced to 10 ppm or lower, carbon monoxide is reduced to 4 ppm or lower, and the overall thermal efficiency of the fluid heater is increased to approximately 80-85 percent.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 1990Date of Patent: September 24, 1991Assignee: Arkansas Patents, Inc.Inventors: James Almond, Wayne Wooldridge, Robert E. Patent number: 4780076Abstract: A power combustion device comprising an elongate combustion chamber having an inlet for a combustible mixture and an unvalved outlet for combustion gases; an open flow valve distributor member mounted in fixed relation in a wall of the combustion chamber which has a first side in communication with the combustion chamber and a second side in communication with a controlled supply of pressurized combustible mixture with a pluralilty of ports through the valve distributor member directing the combustible mixture along the periphery of the combustion chamber, a pump for premixing and supplying a controlled pressurized combustible mixture to the second side of the floating valve member, and an ignition system for igniting and combusting the combustible mixture in the combustion chamber. The power combustion device provides premixing of fuel and oxidizing gas to form a combustible mixture thereby allowing sealed combustion with respect to the surrounding atmosphere.Type: GrantFiled: December 1, 1986Date of Patent: October 25, 1988Assignee: Arkansas Patents, Inc.Inventor: Robert E. Patent number: 4651712Abstract: A pulsing combustion device including a combustion chamber having an inlet for combustible mixture and an unvavled outlet open to the atmosphere for combustion gases, a floating valve member mounted in reciprocation relation in the wall of the combustion chamber, the reciprocation of the floating valve closing and opening communication through ports between the supply of combustible mixture and the combustion chamber. The floating valve may be annular shaped with an ignition means extending through a central portion of the end of the combustion chamber. The pulsing combustion device may be used as an air heater by providing an exhaust manifold passing the combustion gases through a closed heat exchanger over which treatment air is passed through an air treatment duct. The pulsing combustion device may be provided with a pressurized combustion air flow regulator providing higher pressure combustion air to a lower pressure combustible mixing chamber to which fuel gas is added.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 1986Date of Patent: March 24, 1987Assignee: Arkansas Patents, Inc.Inventor: Robert E. Patent number: 4569310Abstract: A pulsing combustion device wherein a floating valve member having a plurality of ports therethrough reciprocates due to the pressure differential of a pressurized supply of combustible mixture on one side and pressurized combustion mixture on the other side closing and opening communication through the ports between the supply of combustible mixture and the combustion chamber. Flat plate floating valve members are disclosed which direct the combustible mixture along the periphery of the combustion chamber. The pulsing combustion device may have at least one constrictor plate having an exhaust port with a cross section relatively small with respect to the cross section of the combustion chamber located across the combustion chamber above the zone of combustion to enhance combustion and heat exchange. The pulsing combustion device may be used as a steam producing device, a steam cleaning device, a heating device, a water heater, or for any other fluid heating purpose.Type: GrantFiled: October 30, 1984Date of Patent: February 11, 1986Assignee: Arkansas Patents, Inc.Inventor: Robert E. Patent number: 4488865Abstract: A pulsing combustion device (10) is disclosed including a combustion chamber (15) with a poppet valve (20) mounted for reciprocation in the combustion chamber (15). A pressurized combustible mixture is supplied to the poppet valve (20) with the combustion gases ignited in the combustion chamber (15). The poppet valve (20) is reciprocated in the combustion chamber (15) by the pressure of the pressurized combustible mixture and the pressure of the combustion gases. The poppet valve (20) regulates the flow of the combustible mixture into the combustible chamber. The pulsing combustion device (10) may be utilized in a steam cleaning device wherein the pulsing combustion device is surrounded by a flow of liquid. The pulsing combustion device may also be utilized for home heating with a fluid heated by the combustion device.Type: GrantFiled: May 26, 1982Date of Patent: December 18, 1984Assignee: Arkansas Patents, Inc.Inventor: Robert E.
