Patents Assigned to Arnco Corporation
  • Publication number: 20070130760
Abstract: A duct for containing a cable and method for mounting the cable therein include providing the duct with a collapsible or flexible wall movable between a contracted condition for mounting the duct in a conduit and an extended condition of increased cross-sectional area for inserting a cable in the duct. The duct is moved to its extended condition by an applied internal pressure and, after the cable has been inserted, the duct is returned to its contracted condition. The duct has a multiple layer construction: an inner layer, an outer protective layer and a reinforcing layer between them. There may be frictional reducing ribs on the inner and/or outer layer in order to reduce the forces necessary to place the duct and/or the cable. Alternatively, the duct may have a single, thin layer.

  • Patent number: 6921114
Abstract: A coupling assembly including a coupler body having a generally cylindrical shape and an opening at one end. The coupler body has an inner wall with an inner circumference and an outer wall. An abutment extends from the inner wall of the coupler body. The coupling assembly further includes a conduit having a generally cylindrical shape complementary to the coupler body. A coupler key groove extends along the inner circumference of an inner wall of the coupler body and is shaped like part of a parallelogram. The conduit has a conduit key groove and is generally shaped like part of a parallelogram. When the coupler key groove and the conduit key groove are aligned they form a pathway shaped like a parallelogram with two acute angles. An aperture in the wall of the coupler provides access to the pathway for a locking strip or flexible key. The locking key has a cross-section, which is a complementary shaped parallelogram. A sealing groove is also provided along the inner wall of the coupler to hold an O-ring.

  • Patent number: 6370753
Abstract: A machine for installing a plurality of cables together in a duct comprising a cable pushing machine and a cable wrapper. The cable wrapper comprises a platform rotatably attached to a mount. The platform and mount have aligned bores therethrough. Coils of winding media are attached to the platform. Cables pass through the bores, and the winding media is dispensed onto the cables. The platform rotates as the winding media is dispensed, thus wrapping the winding media around the cables. The cables are then passed through the cable pusher and into the duct. The rotation of the platform may be driven by the movement of the cables, or by independent means such as a motor.

  • Patent number: 6059264
Abstract: An improved cable feeder uses tractor type drive belts and compressed air to propel cable through a conduit. The axial force applied to the cable is sensed with a strain gauge near the conduit or a pressure detector in a hydraulic system powering the drive belts. If excessive force is applied, hydraulic fluid is diverted from the drive belts. The radial force applied to the cable is limited by a calibrated spring. The feeder can also be arranged in a mid-assist configuration. Conduits and the cable are sealed to maintain air pressure. A by-pass pipe is provided to convey pressurized air from a first conduit to a succeeding conduit.

  • Patent number: 5722702
Abstract: A coupler for connecting a pair of plastic pipes aligned end-to-end includes a rigid plastic sleeve having a center portion and two end portions. An internal passage longitudinally extends through the sleeve and is sized for receiving ends of the pipes. The center portion has a pair of spaced apart annular sealing grooves located within the internal passage. Each of the end portions has circumferentially spaced apart slits longitudinally extending from an end of the sleeve and forming a plurality of elements deflectable toward and away from the pipes. An annular flexing groove is located within the internal passage and near an inner end of the slits for increasing the flexibility of the elements. Each of the end portions also has an annular locking groove located within the internal passage and on the elements. O-rings are located within the sealing grooves for encircling the pipes and forming seals between the sleeve and the pipes.

  • Patent number: 5678609
Abstract: An aerial duct having a first duct in which a support strand is contained for aerially mounting the aerial duct, and a second duct in which an inner duct or liner is contained through which a transmission or other cable is strung. A multiplicity of support strands or several braided support strands could be contained in the first duct. The first duct and second duct are joined by an intervening web so that the first and second duct have substantially parallel longitudinal axes. The inner duct has spaced apart ribs formed within its inner surface. Valleys are formed between the spaced apart ribs and adapted to retain lubricant placed therein for facilitating the passage of a transmission or other cable through the inner duct. The ribs can be either longitudinal, corrugated or spiral. If desired, the aerial duct and support strand could be made of an all-dielectric material.

  • Patent number: 5087153
Abstract: A duct for transmission cable including a polymeric tubing having an inner and an outer wall. Spiral ribs having peaks and valleys are located on the inner wall. The valleys are adapted to receive lubrication and the peaks form a surface over which cable may travel at reduced friction. The spiral makes one revolution from about one to six linear feet, at rib heights from about 0.005 to 0.125 inch, and the spacing between the ribs is about 0.025 to 0.500 inch. The duct may be located in an outer duct which is normally buried underground, or directly buried or plowed. There may be a plurality of ducts placed in the ground with an outer duct. Longitudinal ribbing on the external walls prevents rotation.

  • Patent number: 5027864
Abstract: An inner duct is disclosed which can fit inside a duct and extend along a length thereof for receiving communication cable, particularly a light-guide cable. The inner duct has a continuous side wall with protruding ribs on the inside and outside surfaces to maintain an effective supply of lubricant during the installation of the inner duct and cable in the inner duct. The ribs on the inside surface of the inner duct guide the cable during the placement operation. It is preferred to install a plurality of inner ducts into a duct during which the ribs on the inner duct interlock with one another to prevent spiraling. The ribs also facilitate the dissipation of heat due to friction and ambient sources of heat.

  • Patent number: 4692063
Abstract: A tractor provided with a cable reel at one end and a plow at the trailing end includes a system to monitor tension applied to the cable during underground placement. A capstan engages the cable while driven by a hyraulic motor and the pressure of the fluid supply to the motor is monitored by a pressure transducer. An electrical signal from the pressure transducer is fed to a control which also receives a setpoint signal corresponding to a maximum allowable tension on the cable. An output signal from the control is used to slow down or stop advancing movement of the vehicle and a second signal is used to operate a valve to divert fluid pressure from the hydraulic motor. Tension on the cable extending between the capstan and the reel can be monitored as well as tension on the cable between the capstan and the plow.

  • Patent number: 4582297
Abstract: A cable is pulled in a duct or along an overhead support line according to a method and through the use of a tape comprised of warp and weft threads. Indicia printed on the web is used to indicate the length of the course of travel for the cable along which the web extends. The width of the web is sufficient to affix indicia on the surface thereof. The web has an elongation of 10% or less at a break strength which is in excess of 750 pounds of pull force. The pull strength of the woven web is about 2900-3000 pounds. The web is comprised of strands of parallel filaments of yarn consisting of aromatic polyamide fibers. Insulated conductors are incorporated in the tape as two of many warp threads according to a second tape embodiment for conducting a tension signal along the tape. After a length of the course of travel is measured with the tape, one end of the tape is connected to the leading end of a cable while the remaining end of the tape is connected to a winch.
