  • Patent number: 4813486
Abstract: A retractable slip assembly for downhole oil tools such as packers and anchors which permits retrieval of the tool with a minimum of force and without damaging the casing or tool. The slip assembly includes a plurality of slip elements adapted to engage a setting cone which moves the slips outwardly into engagement with the casing wall. The individual slip elements travel within slip windows formed in an outer sleeve. In addition to guiding the slips, the slip windows facilitate retraction of the slip elements. In order to reduce the force necessary to release the slip assemblies, the engaging edges of the slip elements and the slip windows are provided with a cooperating angle corresponding to the slope of the setting cone and slip underside. The reduced force necessary to retract the slips allows the use of upper and lower slip assemblies in conjunction with a packer assembly.

  • Patent number: 4784226
Abstract: A bridge plug having upper and lower slips for anchoring the plug and an elastomeric packing element for sealing within a well casing. The bridge plug may be set either mechanically or through a wireline pressure setting assembly. The small outer diameter of the bridge plug allows for fast run in and the short design and material selection assures a quick drill-out. The lower cone adjacent the lower slip assembly is locked to prevent spinning of the plug during drill out. Pressure equalizing means are provided for equalizing the fluid pressure above and below the plug before drilling out the upper slips.

  • Patent number: 4640351
Abstract: A packer for a down hole oil well includes an inner mandrel assembly having an upper outer sleeve assembly that includes the hold down mechanism and upper packer seals with a piston on the underside of the packing seals to be pressure responsive and to deform the seals in response to pressure within the well string. Furthermore, a lower outer sleeve assembly has packing elements that are deformed and a setting mechanism to allow the packer to be set in a position within the well casing. Upper and lower unloading valves allow for fluid the bypass the packers when the packer is retrieved upward through the well casing.

  • Patent number: 4572290
Abstract: A mechanical setting tool 10 has an inner mandrel 12, an upper sleeve member 20, and a lower sleeve member 22. The inner mandrel 12 is connected through a shear stud 14 to a conventional wireline packer 16. The upper sleeve 20 has setting slips 52 therein which are set by abutting the cone 66 mounted on top of the lower sleeve 22. The lower sleeve has a bottom shoulder 78 which engages an outer sleeve of the packer 18. Upward movement of the mandrel 12 sets the slips 52 and thereafter sets the slips on the packer. The mandrel 12 then shears shear stud 14 and separates from the packer and then disengages its slips 52 so that it can be retrieved from the casing 11.

  • Patent number: 4530398
Abstract: A retrievable seal bore packer adapted to be lowered into a casing on a wireline and set by a wireline gun. The packer is retrieved by a retrieving tool lowered into the casing on a wireline by a downward force followed by an upward force on the wireline. The packer has a cylindrical mandrel, selectively engageable slips, a lower cylindrical element encircling the mandrel and bearing against the bottom of the slip and an upper cylindrical element encircling the mandrel and bearing against the top of the slip. The wireline gun is interconnected with the cylindrical mandrel and the upper cylindrical element to selectively cause relative movement therebetween and to thereby engage the slips with the casing.
