  • Publication number: 20010037627
Abstract: A closure system for use in repetitively opening and closing an openable portion of a pliable container includes at least one shape memory element which is bowed and adapted to be supported adjacent the openable portion on a side wall of the pliable container for rotation about a longitudinal axis defined by the element. The element includes an elongated, generally concave surface portion and an opposing, generally convex surface portion. Upon closing of the container, the closure element is forced to rotate which functions to place an opposing side wall of the container in tension. The closure system has application to various types of pliable containers, including two-sided, multi-ply and gusseted bags. Provisions are also made for releasably locking the closure system in a container sealing condition.

  • Patent number: 6168312
Abstract: A closure system for use in repetitively opening and sealing closing an openable end of a pliable container includes at least one bowed band which is connected to the container, as well as at least one closure member. In certain preferred embodiments, bands are connected to opposing side walls of the container, with the bands being interconnected by the closure member. When the container assumes an open condition, the bands are generally located in offset planes and, when the container is in a closed condition, the bands nest with at least one side wall portion of the container being located between the bands. The closure member has spring characteristics which tend to bias the bands together when the closed condition is selected, yet permits the container to be readily maintained in the open condition when desired. In other preferred embodiments, a closure member which tends to coil up is utilized to establish the closed condition.

  • Patent number: 6022144
Abstract: A closure system for use in repetitively opening and closing an openable end of a pliable container includes first and second shape memory elements that are adapted to be attached to side walls of the pliable container adjacent the openable end thereof. Each of the first and second shape memory elements includes an elongated, generally concave surface portion and an opposing, generally convex surface portion. In accordance with various embodiments of the invention, the shape memory elements are provided on the container with the concave surface portions facing each other when the pliable container is in an open condition to maintain the opposing side walls in a spaced relationship in order to permit enhanced access to an interior of the container.

  • Patent number: 5603119
Abstract: A hand covering is provided which is formed of a finger portion and a lower hand portion. The lower hand portion is formed from a one piece back and palm part, or in the alternative a two piece back and palm part; each lower hand portion includes integral thumb portions. After sealing the lower hand portion in the flat, the lower hand portion is rotated prior to sealing it to the finger portion. The rotation positions the thumb portion in working relationship with, or in opposition to, the finger portion and provides that no more than two seams intersect at a joint.

  • Patent number: 5579002
Abstract: A user configurable control device is particularly suitable for household devices such as remote control transmitters. A variety of function control elements in the form of keys are provided to the consumer who selects a desired set of the control elements. Each of the control elements has a unique pattern of projections molded into the bottom surface. These projections are in operative alignment with an array of membrane switches disposed on a switching substrate within the control device. The control device includes a front panel that is perforated with a pattern of slots. Each of the control elements has a pair of projecting tabs that lock the element onto the control panel so that it is securely retained thereon, but may be released if desired. The projections on the bottom of the element extend through the slots in the front panel to the switching substrate below.

  • Patent number: 5560115
Abstract: An apparatus for mounting a magnetometer including a frame and a platform mounted for rotation within the frame. The magnetometer and one or more counterweights are mounted within the platform such that gravity acting on the counterweights maintains the magnetometer in a horizontal orientation. A first coil is coupled in parallel with the magnetometer and is wound around the perimeter of the platform. A second coil is wound around the perimeter of the frame such that the first and second coils form an air core transformer. The second coil terminates in two terminals which provide a communication port. A sensing circuit coupled to the port electrically communicates with the magnetometer via the inductive coupling provided by the transformer. In alternative embodiments, each of the first and second coils is implemented as two coils with associated diodes.

  • Patent number: 5455630
Abstract: A time code or other digital code is inserted into a video signal by modulating the video signal itself or the signal's radio frequency (RF) carrier. This allows the code to be recorded concurrently with recording of the video signal, thereby obviating the need for a specially adapted recording apparatus. Furthermore, since the code is embedded in the recorded video signal, the encoded information may be retrieved from the video signal in a unit that is external to the playback apparatus. In combination with a conventional video cassette recorder (VCR), the video signal that is tuned to by the VCR is processed to extract raster synchronization signals. A modulator inserted ahead of the RF input to the VCR modulates the RF carrier in response to the digital code. Feedback of the tuned video signal insures proper synchronization of the broadband RF modulation so that the digital code is inserted into a non-viewable portion of the recorded video signal.

  • Patent number: 5333091
Abstract: An automatic editing device is coupled between a conventional VCR and a conventional television monitor/receiver. During recording of a television signal, data is accumulated with respect to the time of occurrence and duration of detectable events, such as blank frames, in the television signal, and such data is stored in the device. At a time subsequent to the recording process, the stored data is analyzed to classify the content of the television signal between the detectable events. The recording is made on a tape which has timing reference data permanently encoded thereon. During playback, the stored data for each event is compared to the timing reference data read from the tape and the VCR is automatically commanded into a fast scan mode when the tape reaches the beginning time of a portion of the video signal that has been classified for elimination during playback.

  • Patent number: 5159983
Abstract: An apparatus and method for capping a burning or blown out oil or gas well are disclosed. A pipe is placed over a flange and casing on a wellhead and welded thereto using thermite welding. The thermite reaction occurs in one or more crucibles mounted to the pipe. Graphite feeders direct the molten metal produced by the reaction into apertures near the bottom of the central pipe. The feeders join the pipe at an angle such that the molten metal flows into the annular space between the interior of the pipe and the wellhead structure in a generally circular flow pattern. A malleable clamp to conform to the configuration of the pipe and flange is provided to hold the pipe in place over the flange and act as a mold for the molten metal during the welding process. After the weld has formed, a valve in the pipe is closed, which simultaneously shuts off the flow of oil and extinguishes the fire by depriving it of oil, its fuel.
