  • Patent number: 7234737
Abstract: A latch of a vehicle includes a displacement member having a first position, a second position, and an intermediate rest position and an output movable between a first output position and a second output position. A first mode of operation is possible where the output lever is driven between the first output position and the second output position by a stepper motor and a second mode of operation is possible where the output lever can be moved between the first output position and the second output position independently from the stepper motor. A common control controls all the latches in the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 7195292
Abstract: A latch mechanism includes a chassis and a latch bolt movably mounted on the chassis. The chassis includes an abutment, and the latch bolt is moveable between an open position in which the latch bolt can receive a striker of a vehicle, a closed position at which the striker is capable of being retained by the latch bolt, and an over-travel position. The latch mechanism includes a buffer having a displacing element and an engagement portion. The buffer is capable of operably acting between the abutment and the latch bolt to absorb over-travel of the latch bolt. The displacing element is capable of moving frictionally against the engagement portion during over-travel to generate a frictional force to absorb over-travel energy of the latch bolt.

  • Patent number: 7163239
Abstract: An actuator assembly includes an actuator drivingly connected to a gear wheel. The gear wheel includes an abutment secured rotationally fast having a camming surface and operable to drive an output member. The actuator assembly is operable to apply a force in a first direction to drive the output member in the first direction from a rest condition to an actuated condition and is operable to apply a force in a second direction to drive the output member in the second direction from the actuated condition to the rest condition. Movement of the output member in the second direction stores energy in the energy storage device, and movement of the output member in the first direction is assisted by the energy storage device. When the actuator assembly is in the rest condition, a detent engages the energy storage device to releasably retain the energy storage device in a rest position.

  • Patent number: 7070214
Abstract: A lock mechanism has a manually actuable element, a lock lever and an actuator, with the manually actuable element connected to the lock lever via a transmission path. The transmission path includes a rigid link with an end defining an abutment for selectively driving the lock lever. A drive feature couples the abutment to the lock lever when the lock lever is rotated between locked and unlocked positions by operation of the manually actuable element. The drive feature decouples the abutment from the lock lever when the manually actuable element is actuated in an attempt to move the lock lever from a superlocked position, allowing the abutment to move relative to the lock lever.

  • Patent number: 7048314
Abstract: A latch arrangement includes a latch bolt having a closed position and an open position. An actuator moves a driving abutment to move a detent between an engaged position retaining the latch bolt in the closed position and a release position freeing the latch bolt. A clutch member selectively couples a driving abutment with the detent. When in the latched closed position, the clutch member lies in a first position. The actuator causes the clutch member to selectively couple the driving abutment with the driven abutment to move the latch arrangement to the unlatched closed position, causing the clutch member to follow a first path. Movement of the latch arrangement to the unlatched open position causes the clutch member to follow a second path. Movement of the latch arrangement to the latched closed position causes the clutch member to follow a third path. The first path, the second path and the third path are different.

  • Patent number: 7029043
Abstract: A latch bolt engages a striker to releasably secure a first door to a vehicle body or a second door by relative displacement of the latch towards the striker. The latch bolt moves in a first plane to releasably retain the striker. The assembly includes a vertical wedge arrangement includes a first wedge surface on the latch and a second wedge surface on the striker. The first wedge surface and the second wedge surface cooperate to compensate for any misalignment and to prevent movement between the striker bar portion of the striker and a mouth of the latch in a direction parallel to the first plane. The latch is a plant-in latch, and the first surface is provided on a wedge plate securable to a shut face surface of the latch. The first wedge surface and the second wedge surface can be resilient.

  • Patent number: 6991272
Abstract: A vehicle latch assembly includes a release lever and a pawl, the release lever having a locked, an unlocked and a release position where the unlocked position is on the path of movement of the release lever from the release position to the locked position. The release lever is biased by a biasing means toward the unlocked position when it is in the release position. The latch assembly is arranged so that the release lever moves toward the locked position due to the biasing force of the biasing means when the release lever is released. The kinetic energy of the release lever is transferred to the pawl in the latch assembly, and the pawl uses the transferred kinetic energy to prevent the release lever from reaching the locked position. When the release lever is stationary in the unlocked position, the pawl does not prevent movement of the release lever from the unlocked to the locked position.

  • Patent number: 6971688
Abstract: A door latch mechanism for a vehicle comprising a release lever operable by a door handle and a transmission path linkage containing a resiliently biased inertia device. During normal operation, the inertia device is biased to form a transmission path that transmits an unlatching movement from the release lever to release a latch bolt of the latch. If an impact on the vehicle creates an acceleration force above a predetermined level, the inertia device moves to break the transmission path, preventing the latch from being unlatched.

  • Patent number: 6938921
Abstract: A vehicle subassembly includes a door latch and an emergency release mechanism for use in unlatching the door latch. The mechanism includes a release arranged so as to act on a latch input and to supply an increased unlatching force relative to that normally capable of being supplied to the door latch. An engagement member is actuable by a person to operate the release. In a first non-emergency condition the engagement member is substantially prevented from being actuated, and in a second emergency condition actuation the engagement member is allowed.
