Patent number: 7449432Abstract: The present invention relates to a novel use of nanomaterials as a viscosity modifier and thermal conductivity improver for gear oil and other lubricating oil compositions. The gear oils of the instant invention have a higher viscosity index, higher shear stability, and improved thermal conductivity compared to currently available gear oils. The preferred nanoparticles also impart a reduction in the coefficient of friction, including reduced friction in the boundary lubrication regime. These properties are obtained by replacing part or all of the polymer thickener or viscosity index improver or some other part of the composition normally used in gear oils with nanomaterials of suitable shape, size, and composition.Type: GrantFiled: March 7, 2006Date of Patent: November 11, 2008Assignee: Ashland Licensing and Intellectual Property, LLC (ALIP)Inventors: Frances E. Patent number: 7419724Abstract: One aspect of the present invention is an adhesive composition formed from two packs. One pack includes an isocyanate-functional prepolymer formed by reacting a polyisocyanate with an alcohol (e.g., polyol). The isocyanate equivalents from the polyisocyanate exceed the hydroxyl equivalents from the alcohol. The second pack is an aqueous polymer emulsion. These two packs are combined to form the novel adhesive composition. Another aspect of the invention is a method for joining together two surfaces of wood products by application of an adhesive thereto. The first step in this method is to mist with water the wood product surfaces to be joined. An adhesive composition then is applied to the misted wood product surfaces. Alternatively, the water misting can be replaced with an aqueous emulsion being part of the adhesive composition. Finally, the adhesive composition is cured.Type: GrantFiled: July 24, 2003Date of Patent: September 2, 2008Assignee: Ashland, Inc.Inventors: Gang-Fung Chen, Gary J. Walworth

Publication number: 20080190789Abstract: An air freshener package for containing an air freshener and a fragrance emitting substance. The blister type package has one compartment for the air freshener unit and another sample compartment forming a bubble or blister for a separate sample of the scent emitting material. The air freshener unit and sample compartment have a corresponding fragrance. The sample compartment forms a pressure responsive selected area on the package and is designed of a rupturable ventable material. The sample compartment can be deformed by finger pressure decreasing the volume of the compartment and thereby causing a puff of scented air to exhaust to atmosphere through a discharger opening. In an alternate embodiment, the finger pressure is sufficient to rupture a fragrance containing bead filled with fragrance air or liquid which emits a fragrance which is released through a vent or a pin hole formed in the second sample compartment to the environment.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 1, 2005Publication date: August 14, 2008Applicant: ASHLAND LICENSING AND INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY, LLC.Inventors: Daniel D'Amico, Jeremy R. Patent number: 7407707Abstract: The invention detailed herein comprises a family of radiation-curable coating formulations specifically for metal substrates. These coating formulations are based on multifunctional acrylate resins formed by the reaction of acrylate monomers and oligomers with ÿ-keto esters (e.g., acetoacetates), ÿ-diketones (e.g., 2, 4-pentanedione), ÿ-keto amides (e.g., acetoacetanilide, acetoacetamide), and/or other ÿ-dicarbonyl compounds that can participate in the Michael addition reaction. An essential novelty of these coating resins is that they will cure under standard UV-cure conditions without the addition of traditional photoinitiators. Other materials, both reactive (conventional acrylates) and non-reactive (e.g., solvents) may also be incorporated into the resin oligomers to enhance the coatings properties on metal substrates.Type: GrantFiled: April 29, 2005Date of Patent: August 5, 2008Assignee: Ashland Licensing and Intellectual Property LLCInventors: Michael Gould, Thomas L.
