Patent number: 6561359Abstract: An apparatus and method for removing lightweight particulates during processing of a primary material. The apparatus includes a classification tank having an inlet, an outlet and a plurality of settling stations located therebetween. A slurry of fluid and particles is introduced into the inlet and directed towards the outlet. As the slurry traverses along the classification tank, particles come out of suspension at the settling stations according to weight and to a lesser degree, density. The composition as well as the quantity of particles at the settling stations is periodically inspected. If particles deposited at a particular settling station are more or less the same size, and if they have accumulated in sufficient quantity, they are discharged to a flume which directs them to preselected collection areas.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 2001Date of Patent: May 13, 2003Assignee: Astec Industries, Inc.Inventors: Alan R. Patent number: 6504739Abstract: An improved secondary control circuit is provided for controlling synchronous rectifiers in a switching power converter. The secondary control circuit employs control signals from a primary control circuit to drive two synchronous rectifiers. In particular, the secondary control circuit is operable to drive both synchronous rectifiers to an on state during a dead time period of operation. The onset of the dead time period occurs when the diagonal conducting switching device is driven to an off state. The secondary control circuit is further operable to drive the second of the two synchronous rectifiers to an on state only after one of the diagonal switching devices has been driven to an off state by the primary control circuit. In this way, the improved secondary control circuit eliminates the risk of cross conduction between the synchronous rectifiers.Type: GrantFiled: May 18, 2001Date of Patent: January 7, 2003Assignee: Astec International LimitedInventor: Vijay Gangadhar Phadke

Patent number: 6493245Abstract: The present invention provides for an apparatus and corresponding method for controlling inrush current in an AC-DC power converter by controlling the state of a plurality of silicon-controlled rectifiers (SCRs) when AC power is lost. The present invention provides full control of inrush current even during cold startup, warm startup, and power line disturbance conditions. The present invention controls inrush current without the need for an extra series dissapative device and its consequent additional losses. The preferred embodiment includes use of the present invention for AC-DC converters having active power factor correction. An alternative embodiment is for use in non-power factor corrected applications.Type: GrantFiled: August 15, 2001Date of Patent: December 10, 2002Assignee: Astec International LimitedInventor: Vijay Gangadhar Phadke

Patent number: 6480401Abstract: Power consumption of a low-power flyback power converter under standby-load or no-load conditions is reduced by modulating the OFF time of the flyback transformer's main switch as a function of the feedback control current when the load drops below a predetermined level. This modulation overcomes the conventional frequency-increasing modulation of the ON time at low output power levels so as to reduce the switching frequency, and hence the switching losses, to minimal levels as the load is reduced. Excessive frequency reduction can optionally be avoided by a clamping feature that limits the expansion of the OFF time.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 2001Date of Patent: November 12, 2002Assignee: Astec International LimitedInventor: Allen Tang

Patent number: 6434029Abstract: A boost converter topology is disclosed that includes a resonant network comprising a snubber inductive element having a primary winding connected in series to a first resonant diode that is connected, at a first node, to two series connected additional resonant diodes and a secondary winding coupled to a fourth resonant diode connected to the first node. The present invention has the advantage of reducing the energy stored in the parasitic capacitor of the first resonant diode by a factor of four at the turn off of the main control switch. This reduction is achieved by allowing only a small amount of energy transfer to the snubber inductive element so that it does not turn the two additional resonant diodes on before the auxiliary switch is turned on, thus reducing losses and EMI associated with turning on the auxiliary switch.Type: GrantFiled: October 17, 2001Date of Patent: August 13, 2002Assignee: Astec International LimitedInventors: Jean-Marc Cyr, Richard Verreau

Patent number: 6407936Abstract: AC line harmonics are reduced in an AC-powered DC power supply by providing a boost circuit which, during the positive half-cycle of the AC input, adds the charge of a boost capacitor to the AC input voltage so as to initiate current flow through the harmonic suppression inductor before the AC input voltage rises to the level of the bulk capacitance charge. The boost capacitor is charged from a separate voltage source during the negative half-cycle of the AC input, which also provides early current flow from the neutral.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 2001Date of Patent: June 18, 2002Assignee: Astec International LimitedInventor: Allen P.
