  • Patent number: 9148219
Abstract: An improved technique for acoustic sensing involves, in one embodiment, launching into a medium, a plurality of groups of pulse-modulated electromagnetic-waves. The frequency of electromagnetic waves in a pulse within a group differs from the frequency of the electromagnetic waves in another pulse within the group. The energy scattered by the medium is detected and, in one embodiment, may be used to determine a characteristic of the environment of the medium. For example, if the medium is a buried optical fiber into which light pulses have been launched in accordance with the invention, the presence of acoustic waves within the region of the buried fiber can be detected.

  • Patent number: 9142073
Abstract: A telephone network voting system receives telephone ballots cast by voters by dialing a telephone number. The telephone number is dialed by voters spread over a large geographic area. The voting calls are routed to points of presence local to or otherwise identified with the caller by using the caller's ANI or other originating number identification. The points of presence then accumulate votes and periodically forward tallies to a centralized location over a data network. Instructions may be transmitted from the centralized location to the points of presence.

  • Patent number: 9128775
Abstract: A disclosed example involves determining whether there is at least one valid combination of nodes and links from the network of nodes with capability and capacity over time to complete a computer-executable job by a deadline. A total cost combination of nodes and links is selected from among the at least one valid combination of nodes and links with the capability and capacity over time to complete the computer-executable job by the deadline. The computer-executable job is scheduled to be executed on at least one selected node. The scheduling is based on compiled instructions comprising the computer-executable job. At least some of the link capacity of at least one of the links connected to the at least one selected node is reserved, to match a job transport capacity requirement of the computer-executable job.

  • Patent number: 9124487
Abstract: A communication network apparatus and method for routing communication signals form a source device to a receiving device. The apparatus performs only local processing on communication signals to thereby increase the speed of processing the signals. A plurality of the processing nodes is combined into a plurality of sub-networks that comprise the network apparatus. Each processing node of a sub-network need only process address information pertaining to the node's current layer, one layer above it, if any, and one layer below it, if any. Additionally, each processing node has associated communication signal frequencies/wavelengths that identify the processing node as the intended recipient of the communication signal.

  • Patent number: 9118375
Abstract: Block-encoded transmissions of a multi-antenna terminal unit are effectively detected in the presence of co-channel interfering transmissions when the base station has a plurality of antennas, and interference cancellation is combined with maximum likelihood decoding. More specifically, the signals received at the base station antennas are combined in a linear combination that relates to the channel coefficients between the various transmitting terminal units and the base antennas. By selecting proper coefficients for the linear combination and choosing probable transmitted signals that minimize a minimum mean squared error function, the signals of the various terminal units are canceled when detecting the signal of a particular unit. In another embodiment of the invention, the basic approach is used to obtain an initial estimate of the signals transmitted by one terminal unit, and the contribution of those signals is removed from the received signals prior to detecting the signals of other terminal units.

  • Patent number: 9112709
Abstract: In accordance with the teachings of the present invention, an architecture and method is presented for proving an ad hoc work space environment. In accordance with the teachings of the present invention, an end user operates a graphical user interface (GUI) to input requirements defining an ad hoc work space. Software robots are launched and they provision network resources to implement the requirements. The end user may then collaborate with others in the ad hoc work space while activities are logged. When there is no longer a need for the ad hoc work space, the provisioned resources may be returned to the network and the ad hoc work space may be dismantled.

  • Patent number: 9109918
Abstract: We have recognized a limitation that may arise when seeking to deliver both navigational and non-navigational content to a mobile user. The limitation is that the presentation of at least certain non-navigational content may interfere with presentation of the navigational content and vice versa. In accordance with an aspect of this invention, the above mentioned limitation is avoided by the following two steps. The first step is ascertaining an available window of time before a piece of navigational content needs to be presented to the mobile user. The second step is identifying a piece of non-navigational content which can be presented in its totality within the available window of time. Choosing non-navigational content which may be completely presented during an available window of time avoids the limitation noted above.

  • Patent number: 9112952
Abstract: Coordination of information at the network-based level between call centers connectable over a telecommunications network, such as a telephone network, and a packet network, creates improved integration of and bonding between a customer's interaction with a Web site and with a call center. Information about the customer and the customer's Web interaction are delivered to the call center agent along with the call, leading to increased productivity and efficiency in call handling and improved call routing. Calls may be routed to existing call centers based upon information from the Web experience, and information from the user's Web interaction is shared with the call center. Web interaction information is passed to existing call centers using known call center external control methods, such as DNIS signaling. Information about the Web experience may also be “whispered” to the call center agent, and an agent may “push” Web pages for review by the customer.

  • Publication number: 20150229880
Abstract: Systems and methods for model-based video fixing are disclosed. A video can be retrieved and analyzed to determine if any portion of the video can be represented by a model. If a portion that can be modeled is identified, a model that approximates the portion can be specified, the portion can be removed from the video, and instructions for modeling the video can be formatted. The video and the instructions can be transmitted to a receiving device, which can synthesize the model and the received video to generate a model-based video. Systems for providing the model-based video fixing are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 9106305
Abstract: A low-cost, low-power, low-complexity, small, high-reliability, robust, seamless satellite communication network is described. The network performs encoding of a user signal at the customer premises to enable routing of the user signal to an appropriate destination beam at the satellite requiring low power user signal processing. Routing information is embedded at the periphery of the network CPE's rather than at the satellite. Embedding the routing information in this way greatly reduces on-board switching complexity and increases signal to interference ratio for the user.

  • Patent number: 9106622
Abstract: A network is disclosed that includes a message originator computer and a message recipient computer, for secure electronic mail delivery. In accordance with the invention, the network includes a message delivery server that can distinguish between real and phantom messages. In operation, the message originator computer waits a random time and then transmits a first encrypted phantom message to the message delivery server. This message is to spoof an eavesdropper into believing that there is a steady stream of messages being sent from the originator computer. However, the message delivery server recognizes the message as a phantom message and discards it. When the message originator computer receives a user request to transmit a real message to the recipient computer, it waits a random time and then encrypts and transmits the real message to the message delivery server. The message delivery server recognizes the message as a real message and forwards the real message to the recipient computer.
