  • Patent number: 8089871
Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing traffic management for distributed denial of service (DDOS) traffic. Within a communications network, a DDOS detection system monitors network traffic to identify traffic that is designed to attack a particular server within the network and their entry points into the network. A traffic routing control unit is requested to deny service to the DDOS traffic. By selectively manipulating the routing information propagated to network edge routers, the traffic that is denied service is limited to mostly DDOS traffic and is routed to a cleaning center or a null address in the most effective fashion.

  • Patent number: 8089886
Abstract: A method and apparatus for processing timeout events in a packet network are disclosed. For example, the method detects a timeout event by a first network element, wherein the timeout event is generated due to a lack of response from a second network element. The method then determines whether a threshold for reporting of timeouts is exceeded for the second network element. The method then generates a report by the first network element to a fault management system if the threshold is exceeded, where the report indicates that the second network element has exceeded the threshold for reporting of timeouts.

  • Patent number: 8090791
Abstract: Mass amounts of information, such as entire libraries of songs or movies, for example, may be stored locally near end-users, and this information may be accessed and reproduced in response to commands received from a transmitting station via a network. When a radio or television station desires to transmit a song or movie, for example, the radio or television station can, rather than transmitting the entire song or movie, merely transmit a command for reproducing the song or movie. An end-user's performance reproduction device, such as an enhanced radio or a television set, then accesses and reproduces the locally stored song or movie. Since the radio or television station need not transmit the entire performance, network traffic can be significantly reduced. The performance reproduction device may actively request information from the radio or television station when fresh or additional information is needed.
