Abstract: Methods and Systems are provided for routing a call to a landline communication unit or a wireless communication unit based on the availability of the wireless communication unit. A call placed to a landline communication unit is routed to the wireless communication unit if the wireless communication unit is determined available. Otherwise, the call is routed to the landline communication unit.

Abstract: A method for improving the performance for a streaming service by link-adaptation and power-control in a wireless packet network such as an Enhanced General Packet Radio Services (EGPRS) cellular network is described. In particular, the effects of a combined link adaptation and power control scheme (referred to as an error-based scheme) for achieving a target error rate, which is non-zero but low enough so that limited retransmission and error concealment techniques are effective, is presented.

Abstract: A method and apparatus of high speed multi-dimensional signaling via a modem has a processing method of utilizing prolate pulses to optimize the transmission capacity of the channel. The modem includes a process that segments the channel bandwidth and allocates the power and bit loading in relation to a measure of the noise in each spectral bin. Data are carried over a plurality of frequencies across the channel, and within each spectral bin, a plurality of orthogonal signaling dimensions.

Abstract: Methods and systems assist customers in making purchases for goods and/or services by automating the purchase process while providing the customer the ability to speak the purchasing instructions. The customer may place a voice call into an automated service and verbally request that a purchase of a general nature be made. The verbal request is converted into instruction data. A customer profile is referenced to determine information such as price and brand requirements that govern purchases to be made on behalf of the customer, and a purchase is initiated according to the instruction data and the customer profile. The automated service may, in addition or in the alternative, perform purchase option searches in accordance with the customer profile. The results of the purchase option search are provided to the customer so that the customer may then provide a verbal instruction that a purchase should be made.

Abstract: A method of indicating quality of service includes determining values of a plurality of video quality parameters at a set-top box device. The method also includes selecting a color from a plurality of colors based on at least one of the values. The method also includes activating a video quality indicator, wherein the video quality indicator includes the selected color.

Abstract: A technique of operating a communication system includes receiving a first communication signal that is assigned to a first frequency band that does not overlap with a second frequency band. The first communication signal is frequency translated to a second communication signal that falls within an available bandwidth in the second frequency band. Finally, the second communication signal is transmitted.

Abstract: Systems and methods of controlling communication of data are provided. A method of controlling communication of data may include receiving, at a network component, a request for data associated with a data source. The network component may have a limited capacity to distribute data. The method also includes determining whether the network component is exceeding a first capacity threshold. When the network component is exceeding the first capacity threshold, the method includes determining whether the data source meets a popularity criterion. When the data source meets the popularity criterion, the method includes sending the data associated with the data source.

Abstract: A method of providing video content includes receiving a channel change data packet from a set-top box device at a subscriber premise via a packet-based video distribution network. The channel change data packet includes data indicating a requested channel and a channel change index value. The method also includes reading the channel change data packet to identify the channel change index value. The channel change index value indicates an available bandwidth at the subscriber premise to receive video content of the requested channel via the packet-based video distribution network. The method also includes allocating an overhead bandwidth to the set-top box device based on the channel change index value.

Abstract: A system and method for configuring media resources is disclosed. A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a network element having a controller element to present a graphical user interface (GUI) to identify available configuration settings for one or more self-describing services offered to one or more media devices in the network, and manage a network connectivity of the media devices in the network to receive the one or more self-describing services in accordance with a selection of the available configuration settings. Additional embodiments are disclosed.

Abstract: A method of processing online advertisement selections includes detecting an electronic selection of an online advertisement, where the electronic selection is issued from a user computing device. The method also includes identifying an online site with which the user computing device is communicating at a time of the electronic selection of the online advertisement. The method also includes storing a fraudulent click indicator in association with an identifier of the user computing device, when the user computing device has not communicated with the online site a threshold number of times within a first pre-defined period preceding the electronic selection.

Abstract: A wireless communication device comprises a button depressable to associate a communication with the device with a billing account. A method is also disclosed of assigning a communication with a wireless device to a billing account. The method comprises receiving a code from the wireless device corresponding to the billing account, and associating the communication with a billing account.

Abstract: A spoken caller identification system comprises a headset and mobile communication device. The mobile communication device sends the caller identification to the headset upon a determination that the headset is in communication with the mobile communication device.

Abstract: Communications from a first communications address identified by a service user are controlled. Data of a communication from the first communications address to a third party communications address is received. The communication is disallowed when an identification number received from a party requesting the communication is not a personal identification number specified by the service user, the first communications address is a restricted address for which the service user has elected to disallow communications, and the third party communications address is not a priority communications address for which the service user has elected to allow communications.

Abstract: A distributed network including at least two Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexers (ROADMs) may be designed by a method including simulating routing of data traffic in a distributed network. The method may also include identifying a first location for placement of a first ROADM based at least partially on the simulated routing of the data traffic. The method may also include simulating rerouting of data traffic in the distributed network including the first ROADM at the first location. The method may further include identifying a second location for placement of a second ROADM based at least partially on the simulated rerouting of the data traffic.

Abstract: A client of a telephone number mapping (ENUM) server is used to protect the ENUM server from a Denial of Service (DoS) attack. The DoS attack may comprise a plurality of attempts to place exception calls from one or more end user devices that are unregistered. The one or more end user devices may originate from a service provider network.

Abstract: Speech recognition models are dynamically re-configurable based on user information, application information, background information such as background noise and transducer information such as transducer response characteristics to provide users with alternate input modes to keyboard text entry. Word recognition lattices are generated for each data field of an application and dynamically concatenated into a single word recognition lattice. A language model is applied to the concatenated word recognition lattice to determine the relationships between the word recognition lattices and repeated until the generated word recognition lattices are acceptable or differ from a predetermined value only by a threshold amount. These techniques of dynamic re-configurable speech recognition provide for deployment of speech recognition on small devices such as mobile phones and personal digital assistants as well environments such as office, home or vehicle while maintaining the accuracy of the speech recognition.

Abstract: A method and a system for a quality of service (QoS) point coordinator (PC) for a basic service set (BSS) in a wireless local area network (WLAN) is disclosed. The PC includes a QoS management entity (QME) and an admission control entity (ACE). The QME receives at least one reservation request message that characterizes one of a QoS session and a QoS application (session/application) that can be of a continuous/periodic flow type that is time sensitive, or can be of a discontinuous/bursty flow type that is time tolerant. The reservation request message contains at least one QoS parameter set and requests a resource of a communication channel in the BSS for the QoS session/application. The communication channel is organized into superframes, such that each superframe includes a contention-free period (CFP) and a contention-period (CP). The reservation request message requests a predetermined bandwidth of each CFP of the communication channel in the BSS.

Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided for bypassing a load coil in a Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) circuit. An interface is provided for making a connection with the DSL circuit and receiving a combined multichannel signal. The combined multichannel signal includes a high frequency or DSL signal and a low frequency signal or voice signal. A high pass filter is utilized to block the voice signal and route the DSL signal over a communications path to bypass the load coil in the DSL circuit. The voice signal is then routed by a low pass filter to the load coil in the DSL circuit.

Abstract: A method for processing a call is disclosed. The method receives a speech input in connection with a call and transforms at least a segment of the speech input into a first textual format. The method also generates a first list of entries based, at least partially, on a consideration of the first textual format, the first list comprising at least one action with a corresponding confidence level and at least one object with another corresponding confidence level, selects an entry of the first list having a higher corresponding confidence level, outputs a second textual format. The method further generates a second list based, at least partially on consideration of the selected entry and the second textual format and suggesting a routing option for the call based on the selected entry and a pairing entry in the second list having a high corresponding confidence level.
