  • Patent number: 5090407
Abstract: A chemical cartridge for protective respiratory mask comprising a separate active filter section and main filter section. The active filter section is formed of an absorbent medium impregnated with a reagent capable to capture and derive a target toxic pollutant having a chemically active fuction into an inert, non-volatile and non-toxic matter as air is inhaled. This active filter section is permeable to other types of pollutant. The main filter section includes activated carbon, or any other equivalent filtering material, and is positioned downstream the active filter section. In operation, the target pollutant is captured and derived into inert, non-volatile and non-toxic matter by the active filter section, while the other types of pollutants pass through this active filter section and are captured by the main filter section.

  • Patent number: 5090790
Abstract: A polarization independent guided wave semiconductor device is realized wherein the waveguide region of the device includes one or more strained quantum well layers wherein strain is designed to be tensile in nature so that energy subbands in the quantum well or wells are displaced by a predetermined amount in a direction opposite to that for the quantum size effect. Polarization independence is achieved when, for a lightwave signal having an incident mean photon energy below the absorption bandedge of the strained quantum well layer or layers, the ratio of the oscillator strengths versus the wavelength detuning for heavy and light holes in a first polarization (TE) is substantially equal to a similar ratio computed in a second polarization (TM). Wavelength detuning is understood to be the difference between the wavelength of operation and the wavelength of an exciton resonance peak. Passive and active or actively controllable waveguides and waveguide devices are described.

  • Patent number: 5090927
Abstract: Disclosed is a means for aligning contact leads in electrical connectors. An alignment strip includes a pair of slidably mounted sheets, each defining an array of openings having wide and narrow portions. The sheets are initially positioned so that the wide portions of corresponding openings in the two arrays overlap to permit easy insertion of the leads. The sheets are then shifted to align the narrower portions of the corresponding openings so that the leads are held in place in their proper location.

  • Patent number: 5090148
Abstract: A firearm safety mechanism includes a lock with engagement structure. The engagement structure has a locked position in which the engagement structure operatively engages a portion of the firing mechanism to prevent discharge of the firearm. The engagement structure also has an unlocked position permitting operation of the firing mechanism. The lock includes at least one push button adapted to disengage the lock and permit movement of the engagement structure from the locked position to the unlocked position upon the reception of a predetermined selection criteria. Method and apparatus for attaching this and other safety locks to firearms, particularly revolvers, is also disclosed. The firearm can be locked against unauthorized use and unlocked by an authorized user without resort to exterior accessories.

  • Patent number: 5091908
Abstract: Self-testing of a read only memory (10') containing an m.times.n+1 array of single-bit storage cells (12') is accomplished by first loading the bits of a preselected quotient string into the n+0 column of the memory. The quotient string is typically preselected to yield an all-zero residue if no errors are present. Thereafter, a first polynomial division is performed on the entire contents of the memory by sequentially shifting out of the bits in the cells in each successive ROM row in a right-to-left direction into a separate one of the n+1 inputs of a bidirectional multiple input shift register (18'). A second polynomial division is then performed on the m.times.n contents of the memory (10') by sequentially shifting the bits out of each successive row into the shift register (18') in a left-to-right direction.

  • Patent number: 5091767
Abstract: Disclosed are strained layer heteroepitaxial structures (e.g., GeSi/Si) that can have low threading dislocation density as well as a substantially planar surface. Furthermore, a large fraction (e.g., >90%) of the total surface are of the structure can be available for device processing. These advantageous features are achieved through utilization of novel "dislocation sinks" on or in the substrate whose height parameter h is less than or about equal to the thickness of the strained heteroepitaxial layer on the substrate. Exemplarily, h.gtoreq.h.sub.c, where h.sub.c is the critical thickness associated with misfit dislocation generation in the substrate/overlayer combination.

  • Patent number: 5090603
Abstract: A method and apparatus are described for controlling the rate of pouring of molten metal. Examples are given of pouring metal onto a steel strip to form a coating having a uniform controlled thickness thereon. The method comprises the use of an intermediate holding dish having pouring means in the form of a generally vertical slot. The metal head presented to the slot is variable in response to signals from sensors measuring, for example, total strip thickness and the metal level within the holding dish. Signals from the sensors are also used to generate control signals to vary the rate of pouring from a holding furnace into the dish.

  • Patent number: 5091945
Abstract: A parameter communication arrangement where a parameter that is transmitted over a channel using m-bit codewords or labels is quantized before transmission as one of only p levels, where, significantly, p<k=2.sup.m. Since only p labels are needed to transmit the p levels, the unused k-p labels are advantageously available to provide redundancy. The receiver decodes the redundant labels in accordance with an error routine. An encoding table mapping from the p levels to p labels and a decoding table inverse mapping from the p labels to p levels are obtained using an optimization procedure to minimize the effect of channels errors. The optimization is based on the probability distribution for the p levels such that a relatively high proportion of the error protection made available by having redundant labels inures to the benefit of parameter levels which are more likely to be transmitted.

  • Patent number: 5091872
Abstract: A logic circuit simulator for detecting a spike condition at the output of a simulated gate. A plurality of autonomous devices are arranged for parallel pipeline operation. Each device is designed to perform only a part of the overall simulation function. One of the devices is responsive to signals representing gate input stimuli and to gate propagation delay data primarily for performing the spike analysis function. Another device performs the function of gate output signal scheduling in response to gate input stimuli for transmitting messages containing said signals to the spike analyzing device and other devices of the simulator. When the spike analyzing device detects a spike condition, it transmits into the pipeline signals indicating the scheduling of an unknown output event on the gate in question.

  • Patent number: 5091916
Abstract: Improved side mode suppression with significantly reduced side mode suppression ratio fluctuation during laser tuning is realized in a distributed Bragg reflector laser structure by incorporating at least one reflector element which exhibits an asymmetric reflection characteristic versus wavelength over a band of wavelengths wide enough to include at least two longitudinal modes of the laser. That is, the asymmetric characteristic is wider than the mode separation for adjacent longitudinal modes of the laser. In one embodiment, a distributed Bragg reflector laser is shown wherein the Bragg reflector includes a corrugated waveguides with corrugations having a period which varies nonlinearly from .LAMBDA..sub.O at one end of the reflector to .LAMBDA.hd L at the opposite end of the reflector, where .LAMBDA..sub.O is greater than .LAMBDA..sub.L. Integrated and extended cavity or hybrid structures are described in both semiconductor and fiber laser structures.

  • Patent number: 5090574
Abstract: Apparatus (1) for removing detected tramp material (TM) in a flow of material (M) moving along a primary flow path (P). The tramp material is deflected into one of two deflection paths (P1, P2) which are located of opposite sides of the material flow path. A scoop (29) is responsive to the detection of tramp material to deflect it into one of the deflection paths. The scoop is transported over rails (45, 47) between the deflection paths and across the primary flow path by a carriage (43) driven by a penumatic cylinder and rope and pulley unit (65). An actuator unit (91) repositions the scoop after each traversal of the flow path so it can deflect tramp material on its next traverse of the primary flow path.
