Patent number: 6113547Abstract: An ultrasonic diagnostic imaging system is provided with cordless scanheads which wirelessly transmit ultrasonic image signals to the imaging system. The transmitted image signals are accompanied by header and trailer information which identify display characteristics of the image signals for accurate processing and display by the ultrasound system, and also delineates discrete units of information such as data for a complete scanline or image frame. Communication protocol headers and trailers are described which define the communication and coding protocols for the transmitted ultrasound information.Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 1998Date of Patent: September 5, 2000Assignee: ATL Ultrasound, Inc.Inventors: Leo R. Patent number: 6080108Abstract: A scanning aid is provided for aiding the user in obtaining 3D image data of a patient for rendering in a quantified 3D ultrasonic image. The scanning aid of the present invention relates the location of each piece of image data in three dimensional space to the physiology of the patient by relating the scanhead and its image planes to the patient. The scanning aid of the present invention provides the user with the ability to manually control the movement of the scanhead; the ability to obtain uniformly angularly spaced image planes regardless of the speed or variance in the motion of the scanhead; and the ability to obtain a repeatably fixed relationship between the scanhead and the scanning aid to assure the spatial precision of the acquired image data and to aid the user in repeatedly obtaining the same three dimensional ultrasonic images.Type: GrantFiled: November 17, 1998Date of Patent: June 27, 2000Assignee: ATL Ultrasound, Inc.Inventor: Paul T. Patent number: 6007490Abstract: An ultrasonic transducer probe that provides a connector for quickly, easily, and reliably connecting and disconnecting the transducer electrical connections in such a manner that the connection is removable. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the connector provides means for receiving one end of a flex circuit that is attached at its other end to a multi-element transducer located at the distal end of a probe. The flex circuit is oriented and aligned in the connector with a separate flex circuit in such a manner that compression of the connector sections creates an electrical connection between the flex circuits. Since the connector is solderless, the flex circuits may be removed and replaced without damage to the flex circuits or flex circuit conductors.Type: GrantFiled: November 25, 1998Date of Patent: December 28, 1999Assignee: ATL Ultrasound, Inc.Inventor: Peter M. Patent number: 5999702Abstract: An ultrasonic diagnostic imaging system displays a printer icon which illustrates to the user the print format in which ultrasound images selected for printing will be printed, and the number of images which may still be printed on the current sheet or roll of print media used by the printer. The printer may be connected to the ultrasonic imaging system for immediate printing of ultrasound images, or the ultrasound images may be stored and transported or transmitted to a printer for printing at a later time. The printer icon enables the user to monitor the consumption of printer media, the number of image areas available for printing on the current sheet or roll of printer media, to know the format in which ultrasound images will be printed on the printer media, and to know whether a printer being used is a color or black and white printer.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 1996Date of Patent: December 7, 1999Assignee: ATL Ultrasound, Inc.Inventors: Diane Brown, Robert O. Alexander, Sonja D. Takatori

Patent number: 5993392Abstract: An ultrasonic diagnostic imaging system processes echo information signals by means of a dynamic range map for displayed signals which is varied automatically throughout the image to control the displayed dynamic range and noise rejection level in regions of the image. In a preferred embodiment the displayed dynamic range and noise rejection level varied with both the range (depth) and lateral (scanline to scanline) dimensions of an ultrasonic image.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 1997Date of Patent: November 30, 1999Assignee: ATL Ultrasound, Inc.Inventors: David N. Roundhill, David W. Rust

Patent number: 5980457Abstract: An ultrasonic diagnostic imaging system and method are provided for producing harmonic contrast images with harmonic components produced by the contrast agent with little interference from nonlinear tissue interaction. A method is described for developing predistorted ultrasonic transmit signals, the predistortion of which will be counteracted by the nonlinear effects of tissue and result in substantially linear waveforms at the location of the contrast agent. The echoes returned by the contrast agent will contain nonlinear components resulting from the interaction of a linear waveform with the agent, with reduced nonlinear components from nonlinear tissue effects.Type: GrantFiled: November 17, 1997Date of Patent: November 9, 1999Assignee: ATL Ultrasound, Inc.Inventor: Michalakis Averkiou

Patent number: 5938607Abstract: An ultrasonic diagnostic imaging system is provided which aid in the diagnosis of patient conditions by providing access from the ultrasound system to a library of reference ultrasonic images. The image library is cataloged in accordance with an image characteristic such as the type of examination, the part of the body or the type of pathology shown in the image, and the images of the library are accessed in accordance with these characteristics. The image library may be remotely located and accessible by a number of ultrasound systems over a network, or it may be located on the ultrasound system itself such as on a system disk drive. In a preferred embodiment reference images are concurrently displayed with patient images to aid in discerning the patient's condition.Type: GrantFiled: October 24, 1997Date of Patent: August 17, 1999Assignee: ATL Ultrasound, Inc.Inventors: James R. Jago, David N. Roundhill, Kenneth Dickerson, Ian Dewar, Michael A. Wood, Pascal Roncalez, Joseph L. Ungari

Patent number: 5908389Abstract: An ultrasonic diagnostic imaging system and methods are described which produces ultrasonic images from harmonic echo components of a transmitted fundamental frequency. Preferably, a programmable digital filter is used to pass harmonic echo components for image processing to the exclusion of fundamental frequency signals. In a preferred embodiment, artifacts are removed by producing decorrelated replicas of the harmonic signals, which are then combined and used for imaging. To produce an image in the presence of depth dependent attenuation of high frequency echo signals, both fundamental and harmonic echo signals are processed and used to produce an image blended from components of both fundamental and harmonic echo signals.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 1998Date of Patent: June 1, 1999Assignee: ATL Ultrasound, Inc.Inventors: David N. Roundhill, Michalakis Averkiou

Patent number: 5897498Abstract: An ultrasonic diagnostic imaging system is provided which is capable of sending and receiving electronic messages directly from the user interface of the ultrasound system. This capability permits physicians to send messages, reminders, and diagnostic examination instructions directly to ultrasonographers using the system. The system operator is also able to call a physician to an ultrasound exam by means of an electronic message. Electronic messages can also be used to send and receive diagnostic reports and images, to retrieve diagnostic information such as the system presets for a particular type of ultrasonic examination, and to send and receive information from a hospital information system.Type: GrantFiled: October 27, 1997Date of Patent: April 27, 1999Assignee: ATL Ultrasound, Inc.Inventors: Earl M.
