Abstract: Water-containing mixtures of at least one hydrocarbon/halocarbon and hydrochloric acid, e.g., the methyl chloride feedstream in conventional process for the synthesis of chloromethanes, are desiccated by intimately contacting such mixtures with an effective drying amount of an essentially anhydrous drying agent that includes (i) a metal sulfate, chloride or perchlorate, or (ii) phosphorus pentoxide.
Abstract: To recover the antimony contained in a solution of use antimony-containing catalyst, emananting from units for the fluorination or chlorofluorination of halogenated hydrocarbons comprising at least two carbon atoms, the solution is concentrated to the limit of distillation of antimony trichloride, an excess of chlorine is then added to convert SbCl.sub.3 to SbCl.sub.5, and SbCl.sub.5 is distilled under reduced pressure without exceeding 120.degree. C.The recoverd antimony pentachloride is sufficiently pure to be able to be recycled directly to the fluorination reactor.
Abstract: Saturated carboxylic esters are produced from alkyl formate and an olefin, without the presence of substantial amounts of carbon monoxide, at a temperature of 120.degree. to 280.degree. C., under a pressure of 1 to 3,000 bars, in the presence of a catalyst based on ruthenium coordinated by ligands selected from carbon monoxide, halogen atoms and amines, and in the presence of an amide as a solvent. The catalyst is selected from catalysts consisting essentially of RuCl.sub.3.3H.sub.2 O; catalysts consisting essentially of the combination of an RuCl.sub.3.3H.sub.2 O together with at least one stabilizer selected from iodine, covalent iodides and quaternary ammonium halides; catalysts comprising Ru.sub.3 (CO).sub.12 together with at least one stabilizer such as is mentioned above; and catalysts selected from RuI.sub.3, [RuCl.sub.2 (CO).sub.3 ].sub.2, Ru(NH.sub.3).sub.6 Cl.sub.3 and [Ru(NH.sub.3).sub.5 Cl]Cl.sub.2, comprising, where appropriate, in addition, at least one stabilizer such as is mentioned above.

Abstract: A magnetic drive system in a reactor generates rotational and translational motion of the agitator. The magnetic drive system includes a tubular shaft having one end attached to the agitator, and another end. A magnetic annular weight is fitted to the another end. A guide column has an end supported by the reactor body and a free end, the guide column further having a cylindrical bore in which an intermediate part of the tubular shaft slides in a fluid tight manner. A cylindrical guide cap is fluid tightly mounted to the free end of the guide column, the guide cap covering the magnetic annular weight and incorporating a cylindrical guide shaft integral with a bottom of the cap, the tubular shaft sliding coaxially and fluid tightly on the guide shaft.

Abstract: Process for the continuous preparation of lower acrylates from an aqueous solution of acrylic acid and from a lower alcohol, the esterification reaction taking place in liquid phase in a reactor, at a temperature of between 50.degree. C. and 110.degree. C., in the presence of at least one esterification catalyst, the reaction products leaving the reactor, consisting of a mixture of lower acrylate, water and unreacted starting compounds, being sent to the bottom of a distillation column and the lower acrylate being recovered at the head of the said column and sent towards a purification device. The said aqueous solution of acrylic acid is introduced at the bottom of the said distillation column where it is subjected to an azeotropic distillation, the stream obtained at the foot of the column, enriched in acrylic acid, then being recycled towards the reactor so that at the entry of the said reactor the molar ratio of acrylic acid to the lower alcohol is between 0.5 and 4.5.

Abstract: Dielectric liquids are prepared by (a) Friedel-Crafts condensing at least one aromatic halide with at least one aromatic compound in the presence of a catalytically effective amount of ferric chloride, and thereafter deliberately avoiding any downstream destruction/neutralization and/or washing of such ferric chloride catalyst, (b) optionally, removing unreacted reactants from the medium of reaction, and (c) recovering from such medium of reaction a purified dielectric liquid; the subject process is thus environmentally improved by avoiding the generation of aqueous solutions containing contaminating amounts of objectionable organic compounds.

Abstract: The invention relates to a thermoplastic composition comprising a mixture of 25-80% by weight of at least one partially crystalline ethylene polymer or copolymer which has a density of 0.870-0.945; of 15-85% by weight of at least one random copolymer comprising 83-99.7 mol % of units derived from ethylene, 0-14 mol % of units derived from at least one acrylic or methacrylic ester, and 0.3-3 mol % of units derived from maleic anhydride; which has a melt index of 1-500 dg/min; of 1-8% by weight of at least one rubber; and of 0-8% by weight of talc; to the use of this composition for the manufacture of a film which has adhesive properties; to an industrial article comprising a metal coated with at least one layer of this composition; and to a composite film comprising at least one layer comprising this composition, with the condition that the proportion of talc in the latter does not exceed the proportion which is sufficient to provide an antiblocking effect, and at least one layer of another thermoplastic.
