Patent number: 7219063Abstract: This invention is directed to a method of delivering vehicle owner's manual or other vehicle-specific information to the vehicle operator from a remote data center and associated vehicle information database by utilizing a voice recognition system at the remote data center and delivering the information to the vehicle operator in audible speech. The vehicle operator speaks his request in the vehicle and the data center recognizes the request, perhaps asks more questions, leads the vehicle operator through a spoken menu, and then provides the answer vocally to the vehicle operator over the speaker(s) located in the vehicle. The invention includes methodology for obtaining vehicle diagnostic information and controlling certain vehicle functions automatically via an embedded telematics control unit. The invention further includes remote telephone access outside the vehicle.Type: GrantFiled: November 18, 2004Date of Patent: May 15, 2007Assignee: ATX Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Thomas Barton Schalk, Steve Alan Millstein

Patent number: 6414969Abstract: A cellular telephone communication protocol enables a communication link primarily for the transmission of voice and data. At predetermined intervals or on-demand data regarding location, an event, or a condition is sent by muting the voice audio and sending a data frame having a pre-determined sequence. Following the transmission of the location, event, or condition data transmission of voice is resumed. The communication link of the preferred embodiment uses a half duplex, frequency shift, keying modulation technique. However, other modulation techniques may be used.Type: GrantFiled: June 2, 1999Date of Patent: July 2, 2002Assignee: ATX Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Russell M. Herring

Patent number: 6069570Abstract: An asset location system includes a pager, a control processor, a GPS receiver and a cell phone. During normal operation, the equipment on board the tracked asset is in a low power or sleep mode. Upon receiving a location quaere from a call center, a signal or control processor is powered up. If location information is to be obtained from a particular asset, a GPS receiver obtains latitude and longitude information. This latitude and longitude information is put in a transmittable form by a modem. A cellular telephone module then transmits this information to a remote monitoring or response center. If desired, data reporting on asset condition may also be sent the remote monitoring or response center along with the location information.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 1997Date of Patent: May 30, 2000Assignee: ATX Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Russell M.
