  • Patent number: 7862076
Abstract: In order to achieve improved protection of the occupants of a motor vehicle, a side airbag is proposed which, when necessary, provides different hardnesses depending on the size of the vehicle occupant. The airbag includes at least one main chamber and at least one auxiliary chamber. The main chamber and auxiliary chamber are connected with each other via a connecting opening. Furthermore, an outflow opening is present from which gas can flow out of the airbag. The outflow opening is included in the auxiliary chamber. A closing element is provided which, when the auxiliary chamber meets an obstacle during or after expansion of the airbag, blocks or throttles the gas flow through the outflow opening.

  • Patent number: 7857346
Abstract: A safety arrangement for a motor vehicle is disclosed which comprises an air-bag module (1) having an inflatable air-bag (5) in fluid communication with an inflator (4). An internal tether (14) is provided having a first end (15) and a second end (16). The first end (15) of the tether is connected to a restrainable part (13) of the air-bag, whilst the second end (16) of the tether is free from connection with the air-bag but is initially trapped between the folds or rolls of an initially folded or rolled part of the air-bag. The arrangement is such that, upon inflation of the air-bag, the tether serves to restrain the restrainable part (13) of the air-bag until such time as the folded or rolled part of the air-bag (9) becomes sufficiently unfolded or unrolled to release the second end (16) of the tether (14).

  • Publication number: 20100320737
Abstract: An airbag device that may ensure an increased restraining force and a reduction of damage with respect to an occupant that is out of position or of small stature is provided. The airbag device for a passenger seat of the present invention may be disposed inside an instrument panel of a vehicle and protects an occupant inside the vehicle by inflation and deployment of an airbag when an emergency situation occurs. The airbag device includes: an airbag that is compressed into a plurality of layers in a vertical direction when not used, and inflated and deployed when an emergency situation occurs; and a restriction member that restricts the deployment of the airbag so that a deployment direction of an upper layer portion is directed toward an occupant side, wherein the upper layer portion is deployed first from among the plurality of layers of the airbag.

  • Publication number: 20100320735
Abstract: The present invention relates to a gas generator (1) for a safety device for a motor vehicle, which comprises at least two distinct chambers respectively designated as first (2) and second (3) chambers, which communicate with each other through at least one opening or nozzle, the first (2) of these chambers being isolated from the outside, the second one (3) a so-called ‘diffusion’ chamber being able to receive gases generated by the combustion of a solid pyrotechnical charge (5) placed in the first chamber (2), and to discharge them towards the outside. It is remarkable in that: said solid charge (5) is a mixture consisting of at least one oxidizing charge and a reducing charge, the oxygen balance of which is equilibrated; a heat-generating means (6) is provided which generates sufficient heat for triggering and sustaining the combustion of said charge (5), this without any other interaction, notably of the chemical type, between this means (6) and this charge (5).

  • Patent number: 7854477
Abstract: A seat back support mechanism supports the back of a seat in a motor vehicle. One component of the mechanism (15) is effectively connected to the seat of the motor vehicle and another component (32) is connected to the back (44) of the motor vehicle optionally by means of a recliner mechanism. The support mechanism comprises a connection between the components. The connection comprises two pivot links (27,33). One pivot link (33) is of arcuate form with a central “V” notch so that when the back of the seat is subjected to a predetermined force, the back of the seat is permitted about a pivot axis (30) while the arcuate pivot link (33) is deformed, thus absorbing energy.

  • Patent number: 7841618
Abstract: To provide an airbag device for a front passenger seat which has a simple construction and can sufficiently absorb an external force applied to an instrument panel. The airbag device for a front passenger seat according to the invention includes: an airbag kept in an inflatable and expandable state; an airbag container which is fixed to a vehicle and accommodates the airbag; and an airbag cover which covers the airbag container. The airbag cover has a cover surface portion on the instrument panel side and a cover extending portion which extends from the cover surface portion in a first direction toward the airbag container. The cover extending portion is characterized by having a deformable region which deforms more easily than the other parts to absorb impact force by deformation. When a pressure (impact force) is applied to the instrument panel from the outside, the deformable region can be deformed elastically or plastically to absorb the impact force.

  • Patent number: 7837227
Abstract: An air-bag housing comprising a rectangular frame (1) defining an opening and having a mounting arrangement in the form of flanges (7) to mount the frame in position within a motor vehicle. The frame supports a housing-forming element (21) formed, for example, of fabric. This forms a housing having walls (71, 72) and a floor. The walls (71, 72) are formed seamlessly by folding the fabric in half about a fold-line, and tucking one end of the fold-line into the other end of the fold-line, and inserting the frame between the pieces of fabric to lie adjacent the fold-line. The floor is formed by a plurality of floor-forming tabs (25, 26, 35, 36 etc) carried by the fabric forming the side-walls of the housing. • Patent number: 7828325
Abstract: An air-bag (1) is provided with a vent aperture (2). A membrane (3) extends across the vent aperture, the membrane defining a smaller aperture (4) than the vent aperture (2). The periphery of the aperture is defined by a thickened part of the membrane. The membrane is formed of an elastic material such as a silicone rubber material. When a very high pressure exists in the air-bag the vent becomes deformed, thus increasing the size of the aperture defined by the membrane, permitting a relatively large flow of air from the air-bag to reduce the pressure within the air-bag.
