    Abstract: A safety arrangement for use in a motor vehicle includes a blocking unit (6) and a drive (7, 8, 9, 10) to drive the blocking unit (6) from a position where it is flush with the dashboard (4) to a forward position where it will block movement of the knees of an occupant of a seat (1). A timing arrangement (17) is provided which controls the drive to return the blocking unit to an initial position after a predetermined period of time. An energy-absorbing element, which may be an air-bag (12) absorbs energy as the blocking unit (6) is moved from the operative position by a force applied to the blocking unit by the knees of a seat occupant.

    Abstract: An air-bag is formed from a single element of laminar material such as fabric. The element defines a rectangular region having linear side edges. This region has a shape and configuration equivalent to that of the air-bag when inflated. Each side edge of the region carries a protruding flap. There are infill elements between adjacent flaps. The flaps are inwardly folded to overlie the rectangular region. Each infill element lies between two respective inwardly folded adjacent flaps. The folded element may be secured to form an air-tight air-bag with reinforced corners.

    Abstract: An inflatable air-bag is disclosed which is provided with a controllable vent formed in the fabric of the air-bag. The vent comprises a hole formed in the fabric of the air-bag and a flexible vent tube which extends inwardly of the air-bag from the hole so as to terminate in an open free-end located within the air-bag. The free end of the vent tube is normally tethered within the air-bag so as to maintain the vent in a closed condition but is releasable in response to a signal so as to open the vent. In one arrangement the vent tube is fixed to the inner surface of the air-bag around the hole and is configured so as to have a tapering cross-section which is smaller at the free-end of the tube then at the fixed end of the tube. In another arrangement the vent tube is fixed to the inner surface of the air-bag fabric around the vent hole by stitching which runs around the periphery of the hole and which is located within the vent tube.

    Abstract: A recliner mechanism for a vehicle seat includes a support plate (7) mounted on the squab (2) of the seat, and a support plate (11) mounted on the back rest (3) of the seat. There is a pivotal interconnection (10) between the plates to enable the back rest to be reclined. The pivotal interconnection is initially retained by a spring (20), in a retaining part (15) of an elongate slot (14). The safety device comprises a safety net (20), which is spread next to the second side (10b) of the driver seat (10) at least in the event of a rollover accident. The safety net can be permanently spread next to the driver seat, or it can be rolled up or folded together in the state of rest and only be spread next to the driver seat when needed. The safety net prevents the person sitting on the driver seat from falling to the opposite inner structure of the driver's cabin when the driver's cabin rolls over (FIG. 10).
