    Abstract: An imprinting mechanism has a frame delineating a printing station. A printing carriage including a printer is reciprocatably carried by the frame. A drive is interposed between the carriage and the station for causing selective relative movement between the carriage and the station in printing and return directions. Spaced web supply and take-up mechanisms delineate the ends of a printing web path of travel from the supply past the station and the carriage to the take-up. A web brake is provided which has an on position preventing relative web and carriage movement when the carriage and station relatively moved in the return direction and an off position permitting tape and carriage movement when the carriage and station are relatively moved in the printing direction and the printer is printing.

    Abstract: A packaging machine and method for simultaneously loading, sealing and severing bags. A first stepper motor, having an output, is coupled to a nip roll assembly. After a bag is loaded, a sealing mechanism is actuated to seal the loaded bag or bags. A sensor monitors movement in a pressure bar and terminates the sealing cycle if a jam is detected before the pressure bar engages a seal bar having a heater for sealing the bag. The stepper motor is used to retract bags and sever a leadmost bag that is clamped between the seal bar by the pressure bar. A second stepper motor withdraws the web from a supply at a controlled rate to maintain tension in the web between the first and second stepper motors. A dancer roll assembly includes an orientation sensor for controlling the second stepper motor to speed up, slow down or stop.

The machine includes a jam prevention device having a prime mover driven damping sub-assembly which includes a seal bar and a reciprocatable seal pad and housing. The housing is spring-mounted on the clamping sub-assembly in a lost motion arrangement. Movement of the seal pad toward bring a loaded bag into contact with the heater bar sub-assembly is aborted if a sensor detects premature lost motion movement of the pad. Control structure either allows or disallows the sealing process to continue based upon sensor signals.

    Abstract: A container strip in the form of a chain of interconnected preopened bags with openings having longitudinal dimensions of at least about 1/32 inch is disclosed. The container strip provides greatly enhanced facility for bag registration and opening during packaging operations utilizing the improved container strip. A process of forming a chain of pre-opened bags is also disclosed. Face and back plastic webs are independently fed along individual paths of travel to a common path. The webs are differentially tensioned while in their independent paths by stretching the face web more than the back web such that the face web will retract longitudinally more than the back web upon release of the web tension. While so tensioned edge seals are formed between the webs to convert the webs into a tube and longitudinally spaced transverse seals are formed between the webs to delineate bottoms of bags.

The workholder includes a heat-conductive base roll and a plurality of hold-down rolls which expose an edge portion of approximately 0.0625 inch so as to prevent the plastic film from shriveling away from the joint. A bag spreading and transfer mechanism spreads a loaded bag and transfers it to a bag closure station for sealing. The mechanism includes bag supporting structures for supporting the bag during loading transfer and sealing and for expelling air from the bag and compressing the contents prior to completion of the package. The method includes both the steps of expelling air and compacting the contents and the step of allowing the differential escape of oxygen from a package while retaining nitrogen therein.

    Abstract: A thermal transfer printing apparatus for printing an elongate continuous web of items. The apparatus comprises a frame structure having an imprinter mounted thereon. A plurality of idlers supports the web of items and defines a path of travel for the web. A segment of the path of travel is adjacent the imprinter and its print head. A rockable arm is connected to the frame structure and contacts the web along a top surface of the web at two locations. A first of the locations is upstream of the print head and a second of the locations is downstream of the print head. The arm is connected to the frame structure about a pivot point and rocks about this pivot point during operation of the apparatus in a manner similar to a "teeter-totter." A stepper motor drives two drive rollers thereby advancing the web.

A vacuum head on the applicator arm engages the item just prior to the item support's movement away from the applicator arm and picks up the dispensed item and applies it to an object. During operation, the light beam is reflected off two reflective surfaces located on a moveable support operably connected to a prime mover. The reflected beam is received by a receiver located opposite the source. A clamping sub-assembly includes a seal bar and a reciprocatable seal pad housing. The housing is spring-mounted on the clamping sub-assembly and substantially surrounds the seal bar. The reflective devices are mounted on the housing. The prime mover moves the clamping sub-assembly towards a heater bar sub-assembly. The housing defines two cavities for receiving the reflective devices. The movement of the clamping sub-assembly brings a loaded bag into contact with the heater bar sub-assembly for the purpose of effectuating a seal of the bag.
