Patent number: 6857227Abstract: The present invention is a pivoting crash barrier for arresting an impacting vehicle without causing excessive injury to the driver. The crash barrier has an easily replaceable expendable gate which houses multiple plastically deformable cables mounted within for absorbing the energy of the impacting vehicle. The crash barrier design causes the cables to deform as an unit, rather than separately. The crash barrier gate is pivotally supported on a horizontal shaft by an operator unit positioned on a first side of a roadway. An engagement stanchion engageable by the outer tip of the lowered gate supports the lowered gate on the second, opposed side of the roadway. The upper sections of both crash barrier stanchions consist of operator heads that can pivot about the vertical axes of their respective mounting posts after the shearing of restraining shear pins whenever a vehicle impact occurs.Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 2003Date of Patent: February 22, 2005Assignee: Automatic Power, Inc.Inventor: Larry R. Russell

Patent number: 5902163Abstract: A debris shedding buoy having a float body with a top and a bottom is provided. The buoy includes a slide rail, adapted for slidable engagement to a mooring line, is attached to the bottom of the float body. The slide rail is located in a generally centered position beneath the float body and is oriented in a first direction. A rudder device is affixed to the float body and adapted to produce a stabilizing force to maintain the float body in a quasi stable orientation with respect to a current direction, with the first direction being generally aligned to the current direction. Debris lodging against the float body overcomes the stabilizing force produced by the rudder device, causing the float body to rotate from the quasi stable orientation to a second orientation to shed the debris whereupon the float body rotates back to the quasi stable orientation.Type: GrantFiled: May 9, 1997Date of Patent: May 11, 1999Assignee: Automatic Power, Inc.Inventors: Giovanni Baruzzi, Stephen E. Patent number: 4754416Abstract: Universal synchronous marine navigation light system comprising plural duplex lamp stations. Each duplex lamp station includes a microcomputer, all microcomputers being interconnected by an RS422 communications loop so as to operate all stations in synchronism and in conformance with any existing international standard of operation. Each duplex station comprises a first section having a pair of ac operated lamps and a second section having a pair of lamps one of which is ac operated and the other of which is dc operated. The ac lamps are operated in an on/off flash pattern under normal conditions in "15 mile" or "12 mile standby" modes. If all ac lamps fail, the dc lamp is operated in a "default" flash pattern in a "10 mile" mode.Type: GrantFiled: September 8, 1986Date of Patent: June 28, 1988Assignee: Automatic Power, Inc.Inventors: David O. Patent number: 4736205Abstract: Marine buoy lantern employs a heavily damped two-axis gimbal including an outer gimbal frame supported to the lantern housing by a pair of hinges and an inner gimbal member mounted to the outer gimbal frame by another pair of hinges. The hinges are made of plastic and respond very slowly to a torque applied thereto unlike gimbals employing bearings. The inner gimbal member supports the drum lens, flasher, lampchanger, and counterweights. The hinged gimbal cooperates with the counterweights immersed in a very viscous fluid to maintain the lantern vertically disposed notwithstanding angles of inclination of .+-.9.degree., or a total of 18.degree., of the marine buoy mounting the lantern atop thereof.Type: GrantFiled: June 11, 1986Date of Patent: April 5, 1988Assignee: Automatic Power, Inc.Inventor: Robert J. Dodge

Patent number: 4595978Abstract: Although TTL-PROMs possess many advantages over their CMOS-PROM counterparts, their use in controlling on-off operations of indicators such as flashing navigational lights has been limited when battery power is required due to the high power consumption of such TTL-PROMs. Accordingly, a programmable control circuit is provided which includes a TTL-PROM together with a plurality of lower power consumption CMOS units and which minimizes the power consumption of the TTL-PROM. The TTL-PROM has a plurality of memory cells programmed with a plurality of code words. A CMOS addressing means is coupled to this PROM to generate address words to address the memory cells. This addressing serves to activate the PROM to output the appropriate code words in a parallel format. A CMOS parallel-series converter is coupled to receive the parallel format code words from the PROM and convert these to a serial code output signal. This serial code output signal is then used to drive the indicator device.Type: GrantFiled: October 2, 1985Date of Patent: June 17, 1986Assignee: Automatic Power, Inc.Inventor: Herman E. Sheffield
