  • Patent number: 8926413
Abstract: A vehicle heating, ventilation and air conditioning system includes a plurality of ducts for providing conditioned air to an interior of a vehicle. The plurality of ducts includes a window defrost duct and a floor duct. The system includes a mixing chamber upstream of the window defrost and floor duct. A damper is selectively controllable to distribute the conditioned air to one or more of the plurality of ducts. The damper is configured so that when in a floor only mode position, the damper directs conditioned air in the mixing chamber only to the floor duct. A bypass conduit is configured to direct air from the floor duct to the window defrost duct when the damper is in the floor-only mode position. The conditioned air directed through the bypass conduit attenuates noise generated in the mixing chamber from emanating to the window defrost duct.

  • Patent number: 8535002
Abstract: An automotive HVAC diffuser connects to a blower and a variable blower control (VBC) module having a plurality of cooling fins. An inlet receives air flow from the blower. An outlet is downstream from the inlet. An enclosed passageway is provided between the inlet and the outlet for forming a diffused air stream at the outlet. The enclosed passageway has a plurality of peripheral walls for guiding the air stream between the inlet and the outlet, including a curved outer peripheral wall corresponding to a region with a tendency for a high flow as a result of centrifugal effects. One of the peripheral walls includes a VBC receptacle formed as a depression into the peripheral wall having a substantially flat mounting surface and a first sloped side at an upstream end of the VBC receptacle to shape a portion of the diffused air stream.

  • Patent number: 8480461
Abstract: An HVAC duct system of a vehicle includes an air duct for providing a passageway for forced conditioned air. The air duct having a first imaginary axis extending substantially parallel with the passageway. An air duct register having plurality of vane-like members for directing the flow of air as it exits the register is coupled to the air duct. An opening of the air duct register defines an imaginary plane. The register has a second imaginary axis extending perpendicular to the imaginary plane of the register. An air flow straightener disposed within the air duct juxtaposed to the register and includes an air guide member. The air guide member receives the forced air flowing through the air duct in a direction substantially parallel with the first imaginary axis and redirects the forced air in a direction substantially parallel with the second imaginary axis for reducing noise as air passes the vanes.

  • Patent number: 8226068
Abstract: A plenum assembly for carrying air in a supply system includes a duct including an opening formed with an inner surface through which air can flow; a door supported for movement between multiple positions which distributes air to the desired output path; and a seal secured to the door. In a vehicles HVAC system, numerous doors are utilized to provide comfort to the passengers based upon user input. The potential exists that some positions of the doors my lead to unwanted noise. A modification to the seal of the door with variable gap widths alleviates this issue and improves satisfaction.

  • Publication number: 20120168117
Abstract: A case for an HVAC system has at least two molded shells joined together along a parting line to enclose a heat exchanger chamber, a blower chamber, and a diffuser section. The diffuser section includes a floor, a ceiling, an outer wall, and an inner wall around a longitudinal axis. The walls provide an airflow path through the diffuser between the blower and heat exchanger chamber, and the airflow path makes a substantially right angle turn into the heat exchanger chamber which results in a tendency to create a high flow region at the outer wall because of centrifugal effects. The outer wall is shaped to form a wall guide partially projecting into the airflow path in the diffuser, wherein the wall guide has an upstream encroaching surface and a downstream retreating surface so that a portion of the guided air is directed from the outer wall toward the inner wall.

  • Patent number: 8171836
Abstract: An outer cover layer, for a panel that defines a rupturable deployment door of an air bag deployment system in an automotive vehicle, is formed with an invisible pre-weakened tear seam prior to being overlaid onto the panel. The outer cover layer material is pre-weakened along a defined door opening pattern by a single step impression of a variable depth scoring knife into the under surface of cover layer material. The scoring knife contains a series of cutting edges of varying depth and length along its length that coincides with the seam pattern. The scoring may be performed during the conveyance of the cover layer material by making a single impression of the scoring knife into the lower surface thereof so that the maximum cut depth does not penetrate the outer surface of the material.
