  • Patent number: 10751837
Abstract: A method for manufacturing reinforced steel structural components is described. The method comprises providing a previously formed steel structural component, selecting one or more reinforcement zones of the previously formed structural component, and locally depositing a material on the reinforcement zone to create a local reinforcement on a first side of the structural component. Locally depositing a material on the reinforcement zone comprises supplying a metal filler material to the reinforcement zone, and substantially simultaneously applying laser heat to melt the metal filler material and create the reinforcement by drawing specific geometric shapes on the first side of the structural component with the metal filler material and the laser heating. And the method further comprises providing cooling to areas on an opposite side of the structural component. The disclosure further relates to a tool for manufacturing reinforced steel structural components and to the components obtained using such methods.

  • Publication number: 20190054958
Abstract: In a first aspect, a B-pillar central beam made of steel which comprises hard zones and soft zones. Such soft zones have less mechanical strength than the hard zones. The B-pillar central beam further comprises an upper region with a fastening portion for fastening to a roof member, and a lower region with a fastening portion for fastening to a sill member. The B-pillar central beam includes two soft zones. A lower soft zone is located between the lower fastening portion and 50% of the B-pillar central beam height, and an upper soft zone is located between the upper fastening portion and 50% of the B-pillar central beam height. The upper soft zone has higher mechanical strength than the lower soft zone. Methods for manufacturing such B-pillar central beam are also provided.

  • Patent number: 9908559
Abstract: A metal piece having at least two areas of lower mechanical strength than the body of the piece, said pieces being respectively arranged on one side and the other of a longitudinal central section (PM) of said piece and alternatively located in two locations separated longitudinally along the piece, the areas of lower mechanical strength than the body of the piece being formed by local control of the stamping temperature during a stamping process of the piece, notably a process comprising steps including heating the piece to a temperature range suitable for obtaining an austenitic stage, then stamping this piece in a stamping tool suitable for defining different temperatures in the different areas of the stamped piece, for example by virtue of the voids formed in the stamping tool or by local reheating of the stamping tool.

  • Patent number: 8376427
Abstract: An energy absorber for a bumper assembly of a vehicle and a method for the manufacture thereof are described. The absorber includes a tubular body (1) aligned with the longitudinal direction of the vehicle, with a first end (1a) for being joined to the body of the vehicle and a second end (1b) for being joined to a transversely arranged bumper cross-member. The tubular body (1) is made of a single piece of bent sheet metal with two end edges (11, 12) defining the first and second ends (1a, 1b) and two adjacent side edges (13, 14) joined together defining a longitudinal seam (2) extending between the first and second ends (1a, 1b). The method includes providing sheet metal provided with opposite side edges (13, 14) and bending it until the side edges (13, 14) are adjacent to form a tubular body (1) with first and second ends (1a, 1b) defined by the end edges (11, 12) and joining the adjacent side edges (13, 14) together defining a longitudinal seam (2).

  • Patent number: 8359893
Abstract: The method includes providing a planar sheet part; forming the planar sheet part by drawing or conical spinning to the shape of a partially formed part made up of a plate and a provisional hollow portion extending from the plate with a revolution shape with respect to an axis perpendicular to the plate, and an end wall closing an end of the provisional hollow portion opposite to the plate; and elongating a section of the provisional hollow portion by cylindrical or conical spinning. The shock absorber is integral with a plate and an elongated hollow portion extending from the plate with a revolution shape. A section of the elongated hollow portion has a thickness that is thinner than the thickness of the plate.

  • Patent number: 7841648
Abstract: The invention relates to a support crossbeam for an instrument panel to be assembled between two side elements of a frame of an automotive vehicle next to a front part of an interior. The crossbeam integrates several anchoring and supporting configurations for the steering column, several airbags, fuse boxes, ventilation system elements, sound equipment, among others, and is obtained by pressure die-casting of a light metal alloy, such a magnesium alloy, in an elongated single part extending between first and second ends. This single part has an open cross-section general profile, adapted to be demolded in a transverse direction of the crossbeam, with at least one tubular portion with a cross-section closed in at least one of said first or second ends, adapted to be demolded in the longitudinal direction of the crossbeam.

  • Patent number: 7703820
Abstract: The invention relates to a bumper cross-member including an elongated body having a three-dimensional configuration formed from several metal sheet elements joined together by welding and shaped. The three-dimensional configuration has a non-uniform open transversal section along the body. The method includes joining several metal sheet elements together by welding in order to produce a flat tailored blank and shaping the tailored blank to produce the body. Shaping is carried out by hot or cold stamping. The several metal sheet elements can be joined either mutually adjacent or overlaid by different welding techniques, they can be of different of identical thicknesses and of the same type or different types of steel.
