Abstract: According to one embodiment, there is provided a high voltage isolation dual capacitor communication system comprising communication drive and sense electrodes and corresponding first and second capacitors that are formed in two separate devices. The two devices are electrically connected in series to provide a single galvanically-isolated communication system that exhibits high breakdown voltage performance in combination with good signal coupling. The system effects communications between drive and receive circuits through the first and second capacitors, and in a preferred embodiment is capable of effecting relatively high-speed digital communications. The system may be formed in a small package using, by way of example, CMOS or other semiconductor fabrication and packaging processes.

  • Patent number: 8188970
Abstract: A pointing device system includes a moveable puck, a first surface on which a puck field of motion is defined, a controller, and a pressure-sensing mechanism. The pressure sensing mechanism measures an amount of pressure applied to the puck. The controller determines whether the measured amount of pressure meets a touch threshold value or a click threshold value. The touch threshold value is re-calculated when the measured amount of pressure meets or exceeds the previous touch threshold value but does not meet the click threshold value. The click threshold value is re-calculated when the measured amount of pressure meets the previous click threshold value. Changes in a position of the puck or a review of previously measured pressure values or events may also be analyzed prior to re-calculating the touch or click threshold values.

Abstract: A system and method for tracking movement between a surface and an optical navigation device are described. In an embodiment, the optical navigation device has an image sensor that includes an array of pixels and motion tracking involves acquiring image information, the image information including pixel values that correspond to the pixels, calculating a surface quality (SQUAL) value from the image information, determining a level of saturation of the pixel array from pixel values of the image information, comparing the determined level of saturation of the pixel array to a saturation threshold, increasing a SQUAL threshold if the determined level of saturation of the pixel array is greater than the saturation threshold, and deciding whether or not to output motion tracking information in response to a comparison of the SQUAL value to the SQUAL threshold. Other embodiments of the method are also described.

  • Patent number: 8175172
Abstract: Various types of high-speed digital galvanic isolators and corresponding integrated low voltage differential signal (“LVDS”) interfaces are disclosed herein. According to some embodiments, phantom power is provided to one side of a galvanic isolator from the other side of the isolator via a twisted pair cable with shielding interconnecting the two sides, and therefore eliminate the need to provide power to both sides of the galvanic isolator through different power supplies or by way of separate physical wiring being routed and connected to the two opposing sides of the isolator. Such phantom power supply configurations reduce cost, lower power consumption, and increase the number of engineering design options available in a device where high speed serial data communication with low noise are required.

  • Publication number: 20120105661
Abstract: An imaging apparatus is described for obtaining images. The imaging apparatus includes a pixel array, a row decoder, a column decoder, and a trigger circuit. The pixel array integrates electrical signals corresponding to incident light from a scene. The row decoder enables a selected row of pixels within the pixel array. The column decoder enables readout of a pixel in a selected column of the selected row within the pixel array. The trigger circuit generates one or more burst pulses to traverse through a corresponding number of decoder stages that correspond to pixels which are identified for discarding. Each burst pulse has a duration that is less than a stipulated minimum pulse duration of a typical decoder pulse of the decoders. By using shorter burst pulses, the trigger circuit can quickly jump to a desired row and/or column of pixels for readout, while conserving power.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are various embodiments of means and methods for reducing noise interference in a capacitive touchscreen system. Second noise signals related to first noise signals generated by an external noise source are provided to a touchscreen controller, which determines fundamental and harmonic frequencies associated with the first noise signals. In response to determining the fundamental and harmonic frequencies associated with the first noise signals, the touchscreen controller may shift the frequency at which drive signals generated thereby are provided to a capacitive touchscreen. As a result, undesired interference between the first noise signals and the drive signals is minimized or avoided.

  • Patent number: 8169420
Abstract: An integrated resolution switching surface detection system for an optical navigation device. The integrated resolution switching surface detection system includes a resolution switching engine, a surface detection engine, and a navigation engine. The resolution switching engine sets a resolution status based on a motion speed of a tracking surface relative to a navigation sensor, wherein the motion speed is a measure of motion data over time. The surface detection engine sets a surface detection status based on the resolution status that is set by the resolution engine. The navigation engine reads motion data from the navigation sensor and reports the motion data to a computing device according to the surface detection status that is set by the surface detection engine. Embodiments of the integrated resolution switching surface detection system maintain smooth and predictable cursor movement associated with a plurality of finger assert and finger de-assert events.
