Patent number: 4676861Abstract: A pressure sensitive adhesive tape, such as a white typing correction tape, is wound up with backing tape or a liner tape wound between successive turns of the tape. The backing tape is cut into short lengths, and the correction tape is bent sharply back upon itself over a "peeling" member as it is dispensed, to separate the short lengths of the backing or liner tape and leave them behind in the carton. The space within the standard size dispenser package is adequate to hold the waste pieces of backing tape as the correction tape roll is used up. A short cutting blade may be provided to cut off desired lengths of the correction tape.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 1986Date of Patent: June 30, 1987Assignee: Avery International Corp.Inventor: Willis E. Patent number: 4548845Abstract: A water-insoluble, normally tacky, pressure-sensitive adhesive is disclosed having reduced build up on a knife blade when that knife blade is utilized to shear a plurality of webs including a layer of the adhesive. The adhesive contains a mixture of non-volatile components including (a) a water-insoluble elastomeric polymer, (b) a tackifier and (c) a polyoxyalkylene polyol present in amount of about 3 to about 45 percent of the total non-volatile weights of components (a), (b) and (c). The adhesive components (a), (b) and (c) are dispersed substantially homogeneously when the adhesive is applied to a substrate.Type: GrantFiled: April 21, 1983Date of Patent: October 22, 1985Assignee: Avery International Corp.Inventors: Robert E. Patent number: 4528056Abstract: To provide a reinforced paper sheet which has curl-resistant edges so that it will not jam high-speed copier machines, the edges of the paper sheets are reinforced with very thin Mylar strips which are symmetrically mounted on both sides of the edge of the sheet of paper. The strips are preferably about one-half inch wide and may be mounted slightly back from the edge of the sheet of paper. In the manufacturing step, it is desirable that the two strips be applied precisely symmetrically, and preferably simultaneously, so that any stresses are equal and opposite on the two sides of the paper so that the paper resist curling. The Mylar strips may be very thin, such as one-half of a thousandth of an inch in thickness, and the adhesive may be a hot melt type of adhesive which is strictly confined to one side of the Mylar reinforcing strips.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 1983Date of Patent: July 9, 1985Assignee: Avery International Corp.Inventors: Stuart B. Patent number: 4493572Abstract: A long-life inking cassette is provided wherein an inkable ribbon is pumped into a ribbon storage zone by a pair of textured nip rollers. The ribbon is drawn from storage, rotated 180.degree., re-inked, and passed at an angle and under tension past a print head before being returned to the nip rollers. A pair of dams are positioned to contact opposed edges of the ribbon as the ribbon leaves the storage zone to prevent folds of the ink ribbon from passing outwardly from the storage zone. Means are provided to amplify the drag on the ribbon between a dispensing pin at the outlet of the storage zone and an end of a first leg of the cassette. The drag amplification causes the ribbon to be taut when drawn past the printhead.Type: GrantFiled: December 2, 1982Date of Patent: January 15, 1985Assignee: Avery International Corp.Inventors: William G. Patent number: 4492724Abstract: A humidity-resistant wet-stick adhesive is comprised of a vinyl acetate-acrylic acid-2-ethyl hexyl acrylate elastomer, a methacrylic acid-ethyl acrylate copolymer, and an acrylic acid polymer system having an average molecular weight of from about 70,000 to about 90,000, and as the tackifier, at least one alkylaryl polyether alcohol.Type: GrantFiled: July 13, 1982Date of Patent: January 8, 1985Assignee: Avery International Corp.Inventors: Charles T. Patent number: 4428857Abstract: Adhesive products such as label stock, labels, tapes and the like having a facestock, an adhesive layer and a removable, fibrous backing are described. The backing is provided with integral embrittled zones which crack when the adhesive product is flexed and offer gripping points for removal of the backing. The embrittled zones contain brittle, film-forming organic polymer suffused among the fibers. The presence of the polymer in the embrittled zone helps to enhance the brittleness of the zones and to reduce the transfer of residual chemical embrittling agent from embrittled zones of the backing to portions of the facestock brought into contact therewith when the adhesive product is stacked or rolled. Embrittled zones are preferably formed by applying a thickened acidic solution comprising a polymer emulsion to the backing of the adhesive product and then curing and drying the solution by heating.Type: GrantFiled: April 2, 1981Date of Patent: January 31, 1984Assignee: Avery International Corp.Inventors: Benjamin J. Patent number: 4372681Abstract: The present system involves the use of a backing tape with pressure-sensitive labels mounted along one portion of the width of the backing tape, and at least one continuous strip of material carrying related indicia, for example in bar code form, is mounted on a different portion of the backing tape. As the label is applied to containers, the bar code or other information associated with each label is also read to insure correspondence between the contents of the containers being packaged, as programmed into the optical reader at the label applicator head, with the bar code information identifying the label which is being applied to the product. The pressure-sensitive labels are individually mounted on the backing tape, either in the form of die cut or butt cut labels, while the associated bar code information is on the continuous strip.Type: GrantFiled: August 18, 1980Date of Patent: February 8, 1983Assignee: Avery International Corp.Inventor: M. Patent number: 4101698Abstract: An elastomeric transfer laminate for providing decorative reflective metal finishes on the outer surfaces of articles of various shapes includes an effectively transparent elastomeric layer, such as polyurethane film, and a layer of highly reflective metal, such as chromium, bonded to the elastomeric layer. The metal is applied in microscopically discontinuous quantities, but in an amount to form an apparently visually continuous, planar, highly reflective surface. A typical technique is vapor deposition. The elastomeric layer provides an effectively transparent protective outer covering for the reflective metal layer when the laminate is bonded to a substrate. The laminate can be stretched to conform to three-dimensional shapes, and bonded to an elastomeric substrate, such as urethane rubber, to produce an article having a reflective metal surface which can be distorted temporarily during use without disrupting the reflectivity of the metal layer.Type: GrantFiled: July 14, 1975Date of Patent: July 18, 1978Assignee: Avery International Corp.Inventors: Richard E.
