    Abstract: A feed spring for use in displaying items in a display rack is disclosed. The feed spring comprises a sheet of elastic material configured to be formed into a hollow three-dimensional object. The hollow three-dimensional object is secured to the display rack and is compressible to provides a biasing force to position display items in the display rack. The feed spring is maintained as the hollow three-dimensional object in its uncompressed and compressed configurations by interlocking tabs, adhesives, double-sided tapes, or other suitable securement mechanism. The feed spring may be suitably secured to the display rack by attachment to the frames of the display rack or other suitable securement means. Preferably, the hollow three-dimensional object in its uncompressed configuration is a hollow cylinder formed by rolling the sheet of elastic material.

    Abstract: A system for holding or transporting engraveable workpieces of different configurations is provided. The system includes a first workpiece carrier that has an internal relief configured to receive a first workpiece having a first configuration. The system also includes a second workpiece carrier that has an internal relief configured to receive a second workpiece having a second configuration. The outer surface of the second workpiece carrier is substantially the same as the outer shape of the first workpiece carrier, to thereby provide a carrier of uniform outer dimensions regardless of the workpiece configuration. The carrier may hold the workpiece within the internal relief through a snap lock and in such a manner as to avoid contact with and possible damage from an adjacently stored workpiece.

This engraving system allows for an unskilled operator to engrave workpieces of different configurations in a reliable manner.

    Abstract: An apparatus for dispensing unpackaged articles includes a guide shaft to carry the articles, a pushing element that advances the plurality of articles along the guide shaft, and a feed screw engagable with the pushing element and driven by a motor. While the articles to be dispensed are moved collectively as a group, the apparatus provides for the controlled dispensing of individual articles. A sensor is provided to identify when an article has been dispensed and to subsequently stop movement of the plurality of articles. Also, an iris including a yieldable opening sized to allow passage therethrough of an article in a staggered manner is provided to facilitate the individual dispensing of articles and to prevent the inadvertent dispensing of articles.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for identifying a key using a housing having a support that allows light to pass therethrough adjacent the key, a light source for emitting light through at least a portion of the support so as to form a first image of at least a portion of the profile of the key, a substantially planar light beam directed at the key so as to form a second image as the light beam interfaces with the side of the key, and a receiving means for receiving the first image of the profile of the key and receiving the second image so that the non-planar portion of the side of the key forms a non-linear segment across the width of the key. The present invention then can digitize the first and second images and create key information from the digitized images, in which the information is compared to stored information about a plurality of reference keys.

The workpieces are contained in storage columns and biased into a shuttle by a spring system mounted externally to each storage column. The shuttle is moved by the engraver between loading, engraving, and dispensing positions. The workpieces are clamped during the engraving process by a piston and cam arrangement, which provides the desired clamping force yet can be disengaged to facilitate movement of the shuttle by the engraver.

    Abstract: A key cutting machine includes a cutter wheel, a key follower and a key positioning fixture for retaining a master key and a key blank in defined positions. Longitudinal and lateral displacement elements displace the cutter wheel and the key blank relative to each other. First and second electronic position sensors generate cutter wheel longitudinal and lateral position signals which electrically define the position of the cutter wheel relative to the key blank blade. A mode control system selectively operates the key cutting machine in either an analog mode where the bit notch pattern of a master key is mechanically traced and duplicated in the key blade blank or in a digital mode in which an electronically defined bit notch pattern is electrically duplicated in the key blank blade without reference to or tracing the master key bit notch pattern.
