Publication number: 20090185872Abstract: A rasp hub for use in tire retreading machines includes two side plates with mounting pins extending between the plates. Rasp blades arranged in stacks are mounted on the mounting pins. The stacks extend end-to-end circumferentially about the hub. The center portion of the mounting pins is curved so that the cut profile of the blades is convex. The blades are inclined relative to a plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation to define a cut angle. The center planes of the mounting pins intersect, preferably close to the axis of rotation of the hub, to reduce deviation of the blades from the concentricity.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 3, 2007Publication date: July 23, 2009Applicant: B & J MANUFACTURING COMPANYInventor: Charles K. Patent number: 6726410Abstract: A hub assembly includes a core 10 of prior art construction held together between a pair of end plates 16, 18 by a cylindrical sleeve 14, the end plates 16, 18 being braced by flange 20 and nut 42 tightened on threaded end 22 of the sleeve 14. The end plates 16, 18 have an outer ring 34 with apertures 36 for hollow pins 38 to support the core 10 and a cavity 39 with flowable material 40 for balancing the hub. The pins 38 are held in place by plugs 58 which are inserted into the interior of the pin 38 and the pin expanded outwardly by compressing the plug 58 within the interior of said pin 38 to wedge the exterior of the pin 38 within an aperture 34 of the end plate 16, 18 . Each end plate 16, 18 may be ribbed having radially extending apertures 60 to reduce weight and to aid ventilation of the hub.Type: GrantFiled: July 10, 2002Date of Patent: April 27, 2004Assignee: B & J Manufacturing CompanyInventor: Anthony Collins

Patent number: 6695547Abstract: A rasp blade 200 has cutting teeth 130, 132, 134, 136, 140 arranged along the outer perimeter of the blade and having a variable radius. The radius is raised for the teeth 130, 132, 134, 136 at either end of the blade. The radius is lower for the teeth 140 at the center of the blade 200. The radius variation is determined by the rasp blade cutting diameter and the angle that the blade 200 is to nest on the end plate of the hub assembly in which the blade is used. The blade may extend from 30° to 90° with the preferred sizes being 45° or 90°. At least three apertures 148 are provided in each blade to ensure that the failure of any one pin holding the blade in the hub assembly does not result in catastrophic damage to the hub assembly.Type: GrantFiled: April 23, 2002Date of Patent: February 24, 2004Assignee: B & J Manufacturing CompanyInventor: Anthony Collins

Patent number: 6554547Abstract: In an arrangement of rasp blades on a tire buffing machine, adjacent rasp blades in a stack of blades are mounted to the rasp hub. The blades are placed in alternating relations such that the teeth on one blade are staggered relative to the teeth on adjacent blades to increase blade life and to improve the texture of buffed tire casings and, thus, the quality of the bond between the casing and the new tread.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 2000Date of Patent: April 29, 2003Assignee: B & J Manufacturing Company, Inc.Inventor: Anthony Collins

Patent number: 4358893Abstract: A tire trimmer tool has an elongated handle and a U-shaped frame to which a blade of undulated sheet metal is detachably mounted. The undulations comprise closely-spaced parallel ridges which extend front and rear, are open on their underside and are united by narrow connecting webs. The undulations are arranged across the full width of the blade; and the outermost undulations which comprise the two sides of the blade have upturned walls, the edge of which seat is facing slots provided the legs of the U-frame; and an adjustable clamp which connects the two legs secures the blade in place. The fore end of the blade is sharpened on its underside and a narrow transverse portion of the blade therebehind is struck or turned upwardly across the full width of the blade and limits bowing of the blade in response to tightening of the clamp.Type: GrantFiled: April 20, 1981Date of Patent: November 16, 1982Assignee: B & J Manufacturing CompanyInventor: Charles K. Patent number: 4348057Abstract: Dust generated in coal mining is removed by means of a blower having an exhaust fan which draws air through its intake opening from the face of the coal. The blower is provided with a first stage of closely-arranged small-diametered cylindrical-shaped individual centrifuges between its intake opening and the exhaust fan in which the dust-laden air spins as air is drawn therethrough and concentrates the dust in an annular surrounding portion which is separately drawn from the centrifuges through a conduit also evacuated by the exhaust fan. This conduit contains a sharply-reversing bend which effectively separates and discharges the dust into a collection chamber, e.g. a removable bin. A grid disposed ahead of the first stage of individual centrifuges prevents large size particles from entering the centrifuges; and a second stage of closely-arranged, similarly-operating individual centrifuges located in the conduit closer to the exhaust fan remove "fines" which were not discharged to the collection chamber.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 1980Date of Patent: September 7, 1982Assignee: B & J Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Joseph A. Patent number: 4091516Abstract: The outer edge of teeth of tire buffing machine blades is interrupted by oppositely curved arcuate slots which are cupped on centers disposed below the center on which the adjacent one of the leading and trailing deeper cutting side edges of the tooth are cupped. Between said arcuate slots, the outer edge has a shallower arcuate notch the ends of which are obtuse to the tooth outer edge. The portions of the tooth outer edge between the arcuate slots and the tooth cutting side edges are displaced laterally to opposite sides of the teeth and the inner portions of the tooth outer edge between said arcuate slots and the notch are transversely offset to the remainder of the tooth such that the teeth successively present to the tire surface being buffed a first sharply acute deeply cutting edge, then a sharply acute lighter cutting edge of shallower depth followed by an obtuse buffing edge and a more bluntly obtuse second buffing edge which act to finish the tire surface to a required texture.Type: GrantFiled: May 10, 1977Date of Patent: May 30, 1978Assignee: B. & J.
