  • Patent number: 8747466
Abstract: An intraocular lens is disclosed, which includes a diffractive element with a relatively low add power. The add power may be less than about 2 Diopters, may be less than about 1 Diopter, or may be in the ranges of 0.5 to 2.5 Diopters, or 1.0 to 2.0 Diopters, or 1.5 to 2.0 Diopters, or 1.0 to 1.5 Diopters. The low-add-power diffractive element increases the depth of the focus of the intraocular lens, for example, compared to a similarly shaped intraocular lens without the diffractive element. In one embodiment, the depth of focus is defined in terms of a threshold MTF value at a particular spatial frequency. The threshold may be an absolute threshold, such as 0.10, 0.15, 0.17, 0.20, 0.25 or 0.30, or may be a relative threshold, such as a particular percentage of the peak value. The spatial frequency may be 25 line pairs per mm, 50 line pairs per mm, 100 line pairs per mm, or any suitable value.

  • Patent number: 8749918
Abstract: The present invention generally relates to a magnetic recording system that utilizes perpendicular exchange spring media and ring heads. The write field of ring heads does not experience a strong loss as compared to pole heads because the pole can be kept long in the direction perpendicular to the recording medium and thus does not result in unfavorable write field scaling.

  • Patent number: 8748854
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for producing EUV from plasma are disclosed. The apparatus includes a plasma generating system comprising a source of target material droplets and a laser producing a beam irradiating the droplets at an irradiation region. The plasma produces EUV radiation, wherein the droplet source comprises a nozzle having an orifice configured for ejecting a fluid and a sub-system having an electro-actuable element producing a disturbance in the fluid to cause at least some of the droplets to coalesce prior to being irradiated. The electro-actuable element is coupled to nozzle using an adhesive that has a high modulus at the nozzle operating temperature. Improvements also include tuning the nozzle assembly to more closely match the modulation waveform frequency with one of the resonance frequencies of the nozzle assembly by optimizing one of a mass, a shape, or material composition of at least one component in the nozzle assembly.

  • Patent number: 8749926
Abstract: A magnetic scissor type magnetic read head having magnetic side shielding for reduced effective track width and having side biasing for improved stability. The read head includes first and magnetic side shields that each include first and second magnetic layers and an anti-parallel exchange coupling layer sandwiched there-between. The magnetic layers of the side shields are anti-parallel coupled with one another such that one of the magnetic layers has its magnetization oriented in a first direction parallel with the air bearing surface and the second magnetic layer has its magnetization oriented in a second direction that is opposite to the first direction and also parallel with the air bearing surface. These magnetizations of the first and second magnetic layers provide a bias field that stabilizes the magnetization of the free magnetic layers of the sensor stack to prevent flipping of the magnetizations of these layers.

  • Patent number: 8748018
Abstract: A patterned perpendicular magnetic recording medium, such as a disk for use in hard disk drives, has a flux channeling layer (FCL) located below the recording layer (RL) in each of the discrete data islands. The disk includes a substrate, a soft underlayer (SUL) of soft magnetically permeable material on the substrate, and a nonmagnetic exchange break layer (EBL) on the SUL. A nonmagnetic separation layer (SL) is located between the FCL and the RL in the islands. The FCL has an anisotropy field substantially lower than the anisotropy field of the RL, and a magnetization equal to or higher than the magnetization of the RL. The FCL is saturated at a much lower field than the RL and thus channels the magnetic flux from the write head through the island positions. The dipolar fields from the RL above the FCL polarize the magnetization of the FCL parallel to the magnetization direction of the RL in the absence of an external field, to thereby enhance the readback signal.

  • Publication number: 20140155207
Abstract: A key pulley segment in a synchronized, segmentally interchanging pulley transmission system is either first or last in a pulley segment set to engage an endless member. The first or last key segment teeth to engage or disengage, respectively, are shortened or completely trimmed, and the adjacent pulley segment to the key segment is elongated such that the inward portion of the tooth profile extends toward the key segment. Shortened tooth or teeth and an elongated adjacent segment together allow for many pulley segments to be designed as key segments. Completely trimmed teeth may be engineered to create a supporting surface for the endless member on the key segment. The elongated adjacent segment may have an extending portion which slidably mates with the supporting surface of the key segment, thereby receiving radial support therefrom.

  • Publication number: 20140156911
Abstract: Managing data returns to a host in response to read commands, an operation monitor of a solid-state drive (SSD) manages counters used to hold metrics that characterize the estimated time to complete a read operation on a corresponding flash die. A timer generates a periodic event which decrements the counters over time. The value stored in each counter is generated for flash operations submitted to the corresponding die and is, generally, based on the operational history and the physical location of the operation. Whenever a read command is scheduled for submission to a particular die, the time estimate for that particular read operation is retrieved and, based on this information, the optimum order in which to return data to the host is determined. This order is used to schedule and program data transfers to the host so that a minimum number of read commands get blocked by other read commands.
